It will be very interesting to see how this plays out (i.e., whether they go back to tanking mode or not). Of course, with Melo being hurt now and Knicks losing the Hawks may have unintentionally sealed their fate last night by going for a big win (which would be poetic justice of sorts) as they'll get bounced in the first round and have no draft pick to show for their year-long tanking efforts.
BB, your supposition, after thinking about it all day, is correct.
I considered this angle and that was why I had SO much research to support a Cavs win. I needed it to back the Cavs and it was overwhelming.
There is one problem with the Law of National Embarrassment applying to the Cavs Hawks game.
The New York Times ran an article April 1 before the Hawks/Bulls game about how the Hawks were tanking. That was probably read by Van Gundy. It was already in the public consciousness (or I couldn't have written about it obviously). The Law should have applied to that game too. Apparently, it didn't catch fire enough until Van Gundy really rammed it home. The Hawks failed to cover that game and if I looked at all this one game earlier, might have been wrong there too by backing the Hawks.
Van Gundy calling them out added to the embarrassment but it was just a cherry on top and the Hawks had already continued to lose after the Ferry comments went national.
Still they came out hot against the Bulls which worried me.
Well the Cavs game brought it to a whole new level and nothing the Cavs could do, despite their superior talent, despite their season being on the line, despite Kyrie returning and all the angles I detailed in the OP, despite playing their best basketball of the season could overcome the Law of National Embarrassment. It was the wrong side to say the least in the end. I doubted its power because EVERYTHING pointed to a Cavs win their. Ferry went and fu**ed it all up.
It is apparent this Law is SO powerful, it is possible nothing can really overcome it.
That is why I was smearing peanut butter and jelly on my Ritz guy when the Knicks were choking away a 24 point lead to the Kings down to 2.
No matter what, the 51 they gave up in the third quarter the night before invoked the law and they won and covered. Nothing could change the outcome.
Now when the spread is 6 and the law applies, the team WILL win BUT will they cover? That is why you need to back a dog or have a line <=2 as a condition to invoke the Law or else many other factors come into play as the spread grows on a favorite.
Whenever you see this again (especially with the Warriors, be sure to let me know if I don't see it already).
And thanks for feeling sorry for me after this one
. You'll make it up easily given your capping ability. If you haven't already.
