to clear any confusion, the below is from NFL.com rule book.  it states the use of a tee may NOT be used.  therefore the kicking team must either do a dropkick, punt or placekick (which is someone holding the ball).  the onside kick is very much an option here as it is still by rule a free kick.


(b) A safety kick puts the ball in play after a safety. A dropkick, placekick, or punt may be used for a safety kick. A tee

cannot be used for a safety kick.

With so many people here showing they are clueless as to WHY it WAS indeed the correct call, and furthermore, who still insist it wasn't, even when presented with the reasons, I more than ever stand by my original post.

And the more people who disagree with the call, the smarter the call becomes!

In fact, let's repeat it.  It was the smartest call I've seen a coach make in a long time.  A 100% correct call.  It's not easy taking points OFF the board... but he did it and it was the right thing to do.

And I'll accept your apology you asshole.  As I said in my original post, on a free kick after a safety, you can't use a tee.

That wasn't a knee, the score was tied and they were trying to run the ball closer for a chip shot field goal....

So, do you wish to apologize for calling me an idiot?  Are you man enough to admit you were wrong?

By now you've seen the YouTube videos posted, and undoubtedly learned elsewhere, that you CAN onside kick after a safety, just as I stated in my original post. 

Again, you don't HAVE to "punt" the ball.  You can "free kick" it away, and recover it that way.

Declining the penalty was the right call.Taking the safety makes little sense when you just get the heck out of dodge with a win.
