No brainer for me here.. kick the FG. A decent NFL kicker should be able to make it with a reasonable probability.

I do think it is a tough one.
 
What if you were up by 5 in the same situation instead of 6?

go for the 1st down....punting sucks cuz it will probably be a touchback....fg stinks cuz it could get blocked or give them decent field position with a miss....throw a quick slant or a screen...something safe that can go for 10-15 yards..... just my 2 cents

It's a deceptively tough decision, but if I was a coach, I would kick that every single time assuming the weather isn't unreasonable.

you would kick the field goal, you miss and your defense has to hold them, punt and you take a chance of a runback

this is the REAL coaching decision depending how the coach feels on how his team has been playing. there is no clear decision.
1-coach doesn't feel good about his fg kicker: punt, go for it
2-coach doesn' trust his defense: kick fg
3-coach feels real good about his D: punt, go for it.
4-coach feels confident about his fg kicker: kick fg
1+2 : lose your darn game if you dont feel good about anything of your team
3+4 : darn, i am feeling good, lets kick the fg the worse is our D will stop them cold at 37.

FG...NFL kickers earn their money by making fgs, especially those that are inside 50 yrd.

i go punt here, TB defense unstoppable, ive seen minn. block a fg or 2 this year. they aren't playing dallas or NY or houston or any team that can drive the ball down the field fast, make that minn. offense drive 80+ yds on you. this is kinda team situational. i don't like going for it here.

tb vs weak offense, make em drive the whole field. houston vs. potent offense, kick the fg

I say punt, give them the ball at about the 10 yard line, or inside of the 10. A 47 yard FG is tough, I don't know the stats exactly, but kickers are very good from inside 40 yds, and once you get into the mid 40's and up to 50+, the %'s drop way down for kickers. You have to figure you have a 50-60% chance of making this kick. The average kicker does not have a great % for FG's over 45+/ This is about the limit though, if it was closer like a 42 yarder, then of course try the FG.

Have to kick the FG, but if you have a good D like the Bucs, you can punt away and kick it out of bounds, pin them under 15 yds, let the boys do their job and hold minny like they had all afternoon

Easy decision.  Punt. 

47 yarder is no chip shot.  4-4 just means he is due for a miss.  Gotta love the Bucs defense against Frerotte with no timeouts. 

I think you kick the FG against a higher powered offense/QB like the Colts, Giants, Cowboys or Jets.

Attempt the FG.
 
1. You have a lights out kicker who has been perfect on the day (and everything right down the middle).
2. MN has done NOTHING in the 2nd half and you have your defense playing very well.
 
Marginal kicker and/or suspect defense changes my answer, but you had neither of those in that situation.

if they havenj't tried it b4, go for a redirect snap off a fg formation. you'll run about 5-10 seconds off the clock and probably get better field position than what u would have gotten if u missed the fg.

if not, pooch punt it high in the air for 15-25 yards. hope it bounces and rolls around for a bit b4 the bucs touch it.

Dude, you would be punting from the opponants 30 yard line(!!!!!)you go for the FG no question.  You aren't even up a TD where they could only tie if they scored a TD, now a TD wins the game, not to mention you are at home.  Anyone who punts the ball from the opponants 30 at home with the opponant having 0 timeouts and up 6 should be fired.

Given this scenario, assuming wind conditions aren't a factor, and assuming you have any faith in your field goal kicker at all, you attempt the field goal.
 
1)  Punting from the 30 makes no sense to me.  A likely scenario is a touchback and all you gain is 17 yards of field position, assuming a missed field goal.  To me this option should be the least logical choice.
 
2)  How often is a 4th and 9 converted in the NFL?  Certainly far less than 50% of the time.  Obviously, 4th and 1 and 4th and 2 might be a different story.  I wouldn't go for it on 4th and 9.
 
3)  A successful field goal and you're up by 9 points and the game is over.  Most NFL kickers should bea ble to hit a 47-yarder more times than not, even if it's only in the 60-70% neighborhood.  And even if it's missed the other team still needs a touchdown, not a field goal, and has no timeouts with two minutes left. 
 
Obviously, with all of the different answers, this was no easy question. 
 
And if up by five points I'd do the same thing.

If you punt, you risk only picking up 10 yards.  A FG would be the last thing that I would do.  A 47/48 yard FG is hardly a no-brainer.  It could get blocked or missed and give even better field position to opposing team.  I think going for it makes the most sense.  If you pick up 9 yards, then the game is over.  Even if you pick up 6-7 yards, that gives your defense 1 extra play to lay back.
 
I think going for it or FG attempt are the tough decisions.  Punting doesn't make any sense at all.

Agree that FG attempt was right call. You WIN the game with a makeable 47 yarder by a kicker who was already having a good day.  You DO risk not only a miss, but a blocked kick that could possibly be returned.
 
Punting likely gains you 17 yards with a touchback, but since MIN only had 13 pts on the day, TB had to have some confidence that DEF could stop them (from either the 20 or 37 yd line). You also risk a punt block or bad snap etc with punt, same as FG... so why not go for the points and ice the game.
 
Going for the first down is the worst option IMO.

the only real no-brainer situation is, NOT going for it.

with that offense, you don't go for it on 4th & 9, under those circumstances, ever.

 

personally, I attempt the field goal in that situation if there score is tie, through, being up 6 points..

if I'm losing or I'm up 7 or more, I punt.

without having watched the game, i'd kick the field goal.  a 47 yard field goal in the nfl is obviously not a chip shot, but assuming the usual good tampa weather, a kicker should make it and then the game is pretty much over.  if you miss it, (i assume the defense has played well so far) then you have to trust your solid defense not to give up a TD to a guy like ferotte in under 2 minutes.  the two minute drill is not the strength of minnesota's offense.  
 
that being said, suisham missed a 47 yarder short last night costing me the cover.
