I was reading through this thread and couldnt help but chime in with my opinion since this week is a perfect time for discussing this subject.
I am a med/small time local book so i pretty much see everything from the opposite point of view than most recreational gamblers.
The first point i wanted to make was that i can also tell you with 100% certainty that bookies/sportsbooks DID take an ass whooping this weekend due to the fact that there were an overwhelming amount of favorites and overs that cashed. Thats the recipe for a bad week on my end. For example, did anybody notice how many posts there have been this weekend that began with..."i went undefeated so far this weekend" or "im on fire at 8-1"??
To win or lose at that high of % is very rare and almost only happens when there are a ton of favorites and/or overs because those are by far the most common plays made by recreational gamblers.
Im going to use Gilberto's post as an example.(just as an example dude, so dont take offense as none was intendid!!!) He had a killer week and probably raked in a ton, but notice that 9 of his 10 plays were favorites. If that happened every week, there wouldnt be any more bookies or sportsbooks because those are typically the most bet by far. Which brings me to my next point........................
SHARPS vs. SQUARES
I dont use either term but i think that originally the term "square" referred to the common uninformed recreational bettors that ALMOST ALWAYS plays only favorites, overs, and the "to good to be true/easy money" games. By no means am i saying that if you play a fav or an over, that your a square because long term favs, dogs, overs, and unders all hit at an almost identically equal rate.
I have a couple players that wouldnt take an underdog if their life depended on it. When they call in, all i really need to know is how much because i already know what side they are playing. And they also make the fatal mistake of playing damn near every game on the board. These players are typically losing players.
On the other hand, a "sharp" player handles everything in a much different manner. Im seeing people on this site perceiving sharps as these faceless genius people who already know whos gonna win each game and rarely loses a bet. When in actuality, a real sharp player takes advantage of the little things like finding the best line or lowest vig availible, limiting the number of games played, and most importantly MONEY MANAGEMENT. These players rarely take a beating nor get rich in any one weekend, but profit regularly on a week to week basis in small amounts.
I could go on forever but i wont. I hope i have shed some light on the topic and have brought an intelligent and insightful view to the table.
PEACE OUT BITCHES and good luck out there on the battlefields!!!
