Look, I needed Mahomes to score there for my bet and for a fantasy football victory. Both of which I lost because he chose to slide. The issue I have with it is that the Chiefs were guaranteed to win regardless of he scored there or slid there, so I say, why not score? I get it, you slide and you can literally end the game with a kneel down. However, you do risk fumbling the ball having to take a snap. Sure it's a long shot, but it CAN happen. If he scores. It's over. 10 points lead with 30 seconds and no time outs for the Jets. Sure you'll have to kick it off and play defense, which puts players at risk and I totally get that angle, but up until q few years ago, players would never slide or purposely not score. Not saying Mahomes was wrong either way. He made a play that guaranteed victory regardless of what he did there. He is to be commended for that. We win and lose our bets on much crazier stuff than this. It's just extra frustrating when we do lose our bets when we shouldn't have. I wonder how many QBs in the league would have slid there instead of scoring. I'd say not many. Mahomes is a winner though and that's what he did. Time to move on.

Hi Ben so nice to see you my friend. I would like to copy and paste some information about the rules here ……..
Let me settle the debate from the NFL’s Rule Book on settling a tie:
Two Clubs
There is no way an NFL team should not score as many points as possible.

I wrote that in another thread. They were guaranteed a win regardless. Have you seen anyone get an onside kick with the new rules? I sure haven’t. Baltimore and Chiefs both have a point differential of +41. It could very well matter in 3 months.

here's my 2 pennies.
mahomes saved the game from lasting another 15-20 minutes with kickoff and stopped clocked from passing downs. all teasers hit. just the side spread didn't

didn't see the play but i figured that was the issue....i.e. not giving the ball back to the Jets.
but what if they fumble running out the clock?... i remember Larry Czonka fumble against Eagles (Herm Edwards with the return???) but of course, that was a normal type play, not taking a QB knee.
but it seems to me,
1) fumbling the ball is just as likely/unlikely as giving ball back, and giving up two scores sandwiched by a successful onside kick (they must run at 10-15% success rate)
2) very wimpy to worry about something so unlikely.
ultimately, i don't think it matters one way or the other except for gamblers.
i will say that here in canada, missed FG return touchdowns aren't that rare and a team up 16 points the other day, missed a long FG with 4 minutes left and had it returned for TD. i thought there was zero percent chance they could comeback and win. but stupid call by coach....... i remember Auburn returned a missed FG final play of game vs. Alabama. surprised you don't see it a bit more. most blockers and the holder/kicker generally can't tackle the kick returner. so it's 3-4 guys who can tackle

It is utterly amazing to me how the vast majority of humans, when faced with objective evidence - reject it in favor of their own perceived bias. But it seems to be an inherent human flaw to not only succumb to it - but to actually reject the pursuit of evidence based reality.

Excellent, accurate and depressing observation.
