Even Carr hinted in the postgame interview on NBC that the Raiders were content to run out the clock until the timeout. Have to watch it again. But he said the timeout changed their thinking.

Timeout or no timeout.. Raiders were running the same play.. hand the ball off to Jacobs..they were not going to just take a knee.…why would they? they were conservative at that point by running the ball on 2nd down. Timeout made no difference. It was 3rd and 4 from the 39.. and it was a run play.. had the Chargers stopped them there and it was 4th down.. Staley takes his last timeout and Raiders would punt with about 30 seconds and the Raiders would not get a free last second play/FG attempt and it ends in a tie game.

Also those who say oh Raiders were going to just take a knee. Really? It was 3rd down and 4 from the 39 with 40 seconds left.. so say they take a knee and Chargers take their last timeout.. Raiders would have to punt in that situation and the ball is going back to the Chargers with 30 seconds..you don’t know what Brandon Staley is thinking. What if he goes for an all out punt block? And it’s blocked. .

I heard it live but if they're gonna be dumb enough to take a timeout, why not run it. The Chargers aren't a good run defense.

IMO it looked to me like the raiders had no intention of stopping the clock and were content with a tie, until the chargers called that first time out. That changed everything

U cannot take a knee on 3rd and 4 with 38 seconds left when the Chargers have 1 timeout left.. u can take a knee in that spot if they had no timeouts..

I agree. They were running safe plays to run out the clock. That 3rd down play could have run out the game. No way SD takes a time out. No point to risk anything since they go to the playoffs when the clock hits double 0.

Not true.. if game ended in a tie… Raiders play the chiefs .. now they play the Bengals. Who do u think they wanted to play? So there was an incentive to kick the FG..

but if you watch the post game conference, even the raider's coach said they were thinking about the tie since SD did not call any timeouts...until they did.

i am not saying they would of taken a knee but they would of just ran the clock out. stopping the clock changed the situation. They run the ball on 3rd down and sd doesnt use time outs they both would be in the playoffs. Instead its the steelers and raiders. Now thr difference in playing the cheifs or Bengals is significant, but didnt look like they cares before that timeout.

Exactly…feel bad for the chargers players. They played their hearts out. And scared coach called a timeout when he should have had a pulse on what was playing out right before his eyes.

This is classic zero understanding and literally trying to make something out of nothing when it simply isn’t there. The timeout changed nothing...yes the clock technically stopped but it didn’t preserve any significant time left on the clock (3 seconds left on play clock when called, and game clock was under 40 seconds already). The exact same sequence of plays was coming from the Raiders regardless of the timeout. They were about to run the ball on 3rd down before the timeout, and he did in fact still run the ball on that same 3rd down after the timeout.
I could list 100 reasons why the Chargers lost that game but the timeout wasn’t one of them. They lost the game on that sequence because they got gashed for 8 yards on that 3rd down and made it a 90% make-able FG rather than a much longer, lower percentage one.

Dead wrong! Any way you slice it the Raiders were kicking a FG as time expired.
Actually, here’s another explanation that actually justifies the Chargers timeout...you call the timeout there so your defence can step up and get a stop. They stop them on 3rd down then the Chargers call another timeout and it becomes a game of chicken...there’s about 30 seconds left and Raiders have to decide whether to risk the FG getting blocked or missing and giving the Chargers great starting field position and only needing about 15-20 yards in 30 seconds for their own FG try. Raiders would probably decide to punt it instead and try to pin the Chargers inside the 10 at which point the Chargers would also probably decide against taking any risk and just take the knee to run the clock out.
So the timeout was probably the Chargers best chance to NOT LOSE. The reason they did lose was because they couldn’t get a god damn stop.

Disappointed to see nobody woke up any smarter today...this is so wrong it’s just annoying now.
As I said above the Raiders were going to run the same play on 3rd down regardless of the timeout...which they did. The Raiders were going to kick a FG as time expired because they had something to play for (playoff opponent). The only deterrent the Chargers had was to keep a bit of time on the clock and make the Raiders worry about missing a long FG and turning the ball over to the Chargers.
The Chargers needed a stop, they didn’t get it. Raiders kick FG with nothing to lose, only gain (which they would have done anyway). Raiders win, Chargers go home. That’s why they lost, not because of any timeout.
