This is what he does.
Everyone thinks he is innovative for his offense.
But his ingame strategy is circa 1985. It is consistent. He would punt again if you asked him.

I have always said this. ESPECIALLY in the 2H. If I were an owner I would have strict orders to NEVER call a timeout before 5 minutes left in the 4Q.
He is not the only one that does it. Forever, coaches do that all game long and have allowed their QB to take that timeout -- take the 5 yard penalty.
BUT MAINLY get the play in, and off, quicker!!
The Timeouts become increasingly MORE valuable the later the time in the game.
Just as a pawn becomes more valuable in a chess game as it advances.

Matt Lafluer has been notorious for this for years now. The guy usually has 1 or no timeouts just before halftime or at the end of the game. A five yard delay of game may kill a drive, but having no timeouts at the end will kill a game. Unreal how many coaches still can't figure this out.
I'm not backing up no idiot for a coach but sometimes, they are making decisions basing upon the fundamentals of the game. Guys like the lion coach is a gambler. Fundamentals will get you out of them press conference interviews, especially when your team loses.
So why did you call them unnecessarily timeouts? Because 90% of other coaches will plus stats track says it's the right move 
The decision to punt is compounded by the fact that they were up by one point. Defensive field position really doesn't mean anything in that situation, because even if the Lions score, you're always within one score.
Punting on 4th and 4 is just so dumb in that situation
1 time out and he gives the ball back. The Rams were at the 44 of the Lions. The 44 or the 10 yard line it doesn't matter. 2 first downs the game is over. You play to win. Rams pick the first down up they are in fg range to take the lead. The 1 timeout is automatically go 4th down in the playoffs. They never seen the ball again.

McVay punts and doesn’t see the ball again. Not sure what he gained by punting ?
If the Rams cannot covert 4th and 14, turnover on downs and Lions ball on their own 44.
Field position was irrelevant at that point in time. What mattered was not allowing first downs.
Stafford averaged 10.5 yard per attempt. I still cannot believe he punted on 4th and 14. One of the worst coaching decisions I’ve seen in years.
RAMS would’ve walked into the NFCCG if they beat the lions.

1 timeout and the 2 min warning , that’s why field position is relavent , if he gets the ball back he won’t have much time left on the clock with probably no timeouts left, the difference betweeen going roughly 60 yards or 30 yards to kick a field goal is big in that specific situation
the lions had 12 yards rushing in the second half at that point, he liked how his d was playing obviously, the lions needed 2 first downs , that’s why he punted coupled with the fact that
A 4th and 14 conversion rate is about 1 in 5 in the nfl , 20 % , he knows that obviously , it’s all debatable after the fact

u say it’s 4th and 4 , when it’s really 4th and 14 with 4 plus minutes left , field position obviously matters , not according to u though 
u take shots at me for my 500 unit plays 84.6 % ,
u don’t even know what the down and distance is and that field position matters
