Lewis was an option in the receiving game. Amendola and Edelman had a combined 2 starts since wk11, so was it really on Lewis?
BOL buddy!
From the skill positions, Lewis is the 3rd most important player on the NE offense imo after Gronk/Edelman. While James White is comparable as a receiving threat out of the back field, Lewis' real value was in the run game where he avged almost 5 YPC and his ability to make people miss and block for Brady is underrated.
The versatility of Gronk/Edelman/Lewis in the passing/running/blocking game makes them unpredictable and why the 10-0 start was no fluke. Few teams can game plan for so many versatile all-around players in a quick strike offense that is unique in this league.

I don't think that just throwing it almost every time will be a good strategy vs the most physical pass rushing defense in the league. I think that even with the A. Brown injury, the Steelers had plenty of depth on offense and that Denver won't have as much trouble with the smaller and less physical WRs NE has. Since TJ Ward came back Denver's D is back to being the best in the league at stuffing passing offenses and I think Pitt gave them more trouble than NE will.

NE didn't even try to run the ball against SEA/BAL last year in the playoffs and how did that turn out?
There's some crazy stat out there where if a team throws more than 80% of the time...the Pats are 6-1 while the rest of the NFL is 6-184. Mind boggling but shows you that if there's one team that can throw all the time and still win, its NE.
TJ Ward is good against the run but a liability in coverage. All the more reason to pass against DEN especially with a banged up Harris and a secondary that is made to defend vertical offenses and not spread offenses like NE's.

Great stuff, Suuma. I'm on Denver, but you make some great points for taking the Pats. Hopefully it's a fantastic game, and the best team wins without the help of freak injuries, or a horribly blown call by the refs.

Suuma, good writeup...always love reading your analysis. I'm definitely on Pats -3
Did you have a writeup for Cards? My initial lean was Cards but now I'm 50/50 on that game. The weather in Charlotte makes me think that the Panthers get a huge advantage here...ground and pound on offense and the Cards might not be able to exploit the Panther's biggest weakness on D (throwing deep on their secondary) because of the weather.

"Belichick a genius " can you please just stop repeating media crap He's only a Football coach in a crappy stinky league and he's done as many Retard things as a lot of other coaches. He's lucky to be a coach in the consistently STINKY AFC East for the past 16 years .Can you come up with something original ? The reconstituted Horse manure is rather boring
My $'s on DEN but are you really posting here that the NFL is a crap league and he's done the same yard things other coaches have?
Question: are you just dumb or shit stupid? Stop blasting others' posts, as they're entitled just as you are. The only difference is you sound like a whiny little snatch who couldn't hit the side of a barn.
Recess is over meat, let the adults take it from here.

I checked two weather reports: partly cloudly, no rain and winds of 4-8 mph. No issue at all. The only weather that has a negative effect on the vertical passing game is high winds, because the flight path of the ball increases the variance of the accuracy. People tend to believe that rain and snow favors the under because teams would ground and pound. That's a myth. On a wet pitch, the offense has a slight advantage because it's tougher for defenders to change direction. A wet pitch doesn't effect running forward. Remember Bears/Vikings a few years ago in the Snow Bowl? The over hit in the third quarter, because the public overvalues weather.
I like the Cardinals here because I believe they are the better overall team with a great coaching staff. The Panthers are 15-1 on probably the worst schedule in the league. Yeah people will attack me saying 15-1 is no joke at all. But if you look at the games in which the Panthers struggled or needed to overcome a comeback by the opponent, it was against teams who excel in the vertical passing game, like Saints, Colts, Falcons and Giants. Problem was that these teams have a bottom-10 defense on which Cam Newton was going havoc. Last week the Seahawks had a bad start and we found out that the Seahawks got outscored 0-91 in first halfs of playoff games under Pete Carroll when they start before 1 pm their body time. During the second half, the Panthers wanted to milk the clock but their defense still needed to do their work. The Seahawks play-calling in the first half was terrible, I would have done a better job on Madden. Down 0-14 and 0-21 they handed the ball off to Lynch who was having a bad season and a bad game due to their offensive line being weak in run-blocking. After making adjustments, Wilson torched them through the air. This Carolina secondary had issues during the regular season when healthy, now they are starting the 4th and 5th CBs Finnegan and McClain opposite of Norman. McClain was attacked by the Seahawks and he didn't stand a chance against a mediocre receiving corps. Safety Coleman also looks below average without veteran CB help. The Cardinals have a MUCH better OL in terms of run-blocking and also better pass protection. They are capable of gaining a few yards on the ground and attacking this secondary deep with Fitzgerald, Floyd and Brown. Norman usually stays on his island, so who is going to cover Fitzgerald in the slot? Terrible matchup problem for the Panthers. The Cardinals have a top-3 passing offense and a great playbook by Bruce Arians who is super aggressive.
Before the season started, everyone thought that the Panthers did a terrible job in not upgrading this OL and we expected another poor season by them. The fact is that this group played a very weak schedule. The Panthers are built to run first and then look what Cam can do through the air. Without the big Stewart run last Sunday, they averaged just under 3 YPC and they were shut out in the second half. Another tough game they had was at Houston against that strong front seven. Stewart ran for just 3.6 YPC and Cam Newton had his worst passing performance of the season. The Cardinals defense is a perfect matchup for the Panthers. They are stout against the run which they are going to contain this Sunday. That makes Cam Newton having the need of throwing into the coverages of a All Pro level playing Patrick Peterson, Justin Bethel, Jerraud Powers and Tony Jefferson. Plus the Cardinals are playing in a division with Russell Wilson and Colin Kaepernick. They know how to defend a dual-threat QB on the ground.
All in all, I believe the Cards have the better matchup here and are able to jump a lead with the aggressive play-calling of Bruce Arians. The Panthers will have a hard time running tomorrow which will lead to some mistakes by Cam Newton in the passing game. I can see him getting picked twice.

Brady's 2-6 record included the 2005 playoffs (played in Jan 06) where Denver was clearly the better team that year.
2013 AFCC Pats were w/o Gronk, and the better team won on that day.
In the past Nov game, the Pats were basically fielding a skeleton squad.
Brady is also 5-2 (not 2-5) against Wade Phillips' led defenses which traditionally (including this current defense) are not about scheming but just play you straight up.
Hightower is also much better after the RS ended helped by the bye week, not sure what you were seeing there. Collins will play but how effective he will be remains to be seen, although I'd make the argument his presence is most important if the opposing QB is a mobile one which Manning is definitely not.
Freeney is the first choice starting MLB for BB so while losing Mayo isn't ideal, he's not the Pro Bowler that he once was.
Denver was better in 2006, but Pats still could've won that game without Bradys awful red zone pick 6. I don't think excluding that game makes sense. The AFCCG I can see somewhat as that was more about the NE D not being able to stop Peyton playing at a high level especially after Talib went out than it was Brady's play. Anyway, I tend towards Parcells on this stuff, truly extraordinary circumstances in 1 game are worth considering, but this is 8 games, the record is what it is.
I heard the Wade Phillips stat on radio so could certainly be wrong, do you have a link or anything?
I also think that Kubiaks consistent success running against BB is a concern, it's not the typical running game, there is something there. Hightower if he plays all game at a high level will probably make the difference as in previous game. I do think he looked better last week btw, but is still not 100%, the Pats beat writer said he won't be himself until after the season per Hightower.
My concern on the LBs would be depth if HT or Collins goes down.
Anyway, good discussion.

Suuma, your write up on Cards/Panthers was primarily one sided. I don't know if you have done your homework or critique enough on the Cards. A couple things to consider. They lost honey badger and it clearly has an impact. Against a weak GB team they needed to be fortunate. I was disappointed in their inability to move the ball offensively on GB and see a challenge for them to move it in Carolina. Carolina defense looked great in the first half against Sea and just held on in the second half albeit the game was never in jeopardy. I see AZ having difficulty moving the chains and Cam Newton's athleticism being the difference here. You still may be on the right side here but would like to hear your thoughts o the weaknesses of AZ.

Did you read my write-up on the Packers game? The Packers defense plus OL healthness were the reasons for me to take them. I predicted that ARI will have a very hard time moving the ball on the Packers and predicted a 23-20 win either way. The Packers defense is everything but weak. They are GOOD. This secondary is easily top-10 material, maybe top-8. Shields, Burnett, Clinton-Dix, Hayward, Rollins, Randall, Hyde is also a very deep unit. I will take the Packers secondary all day long over what the Panthers will bring to the table tomorrow.
The Panthers do have a good defense, no doubt. But it's primarily because of their front seven. The reason they dominated the Seahawks in the first half was that the Seahawks' play-calling played exactly into the strenghts of the Panthers. Lynch couldn't run all season long and yet they try to feed him even though it was impossible to run on the Panthers. They totally passed on putting Wilson into play-action on which he is at best. When they started calling more passing plays and bootleg concepts for Wilson, they were able to exploit the Panthers secondary.
The weakness of the Cardinals defense is the lack of finishing a pass rush. They use havoc blitzing concepts like Double Loops with some well designed disguised blitzes, but they don't have the quality of an edge rush to get sacks. They want to disrupt the passing lanes of opposing QBs and make him feel pressure so he makes bad decisions which results into interceptions, a lot of them by Mathieu playing the robber position. But even with Mathieu, they got beaten by good passing offenses like Seahawks and Bengals this season. Cam Newton is the MVP, but in fact, he doesn't play a career season. People look at TDs, and he collected a lot because of short fields. But his numbers tell us that he averages 1.3 yards per play less than Carson Palmer. Regarding NYPPA, Comp% he plays only his 2nd to 3rd best season. The Panthers offense will be limited tomorrow, it would surprise me if they move the ball consistently when starting in their territory.

Thanks suuma...my concerns were more field-related due to the grass being in such poor shape last week and adding a few inches of melted snow I'm sure won't help, but the wind angle does make a lot of sense.
Although this play will be much smaller than my NE play, I'll tail you on this one...not sure if I'm going to play the +3 or play the ML. I also may add AZ TT over depending on what number drops tomorrow for me, Carolina has given up a ton of big second half leads this year.

My $'s on DEN but are you really posting here that the NFL is a crap league and he's done the same yard things other coaches have?
Question: are you just dumb or garbage stupid? Stop blasting others' posts, as they're entitled just as you are. The only difference is you sound like a whiny little snatch who couldn't hit the side of a barn.

No , the other teams and coaches are not in the AFC East, and put the Patriots in the NFC and all this perceived success disappears overnight
Just look at how much trouble they have beating the doormat NY Giants in the regular season or a championship game

Was leaning towards the Patriots, then found out Hochuli is the ref. Staying away now. Something just doesn't add up with Goodell putting him in this game. Goodell wants to shove a 12" dildo up Brady and Krafts asss. The league and Vegas need Denver in this spot, can't see both taking it up the hoop

While being a coach in the AFC East creates all the false bravado and counting of these quote unquote " championship games" which is really only winning 1 home game that you were favored by usually more than a TD ,
it's all sounds great and the media sells it as great
On the other hand it also creates the negative and on Sunday Feb 7 the great Belichick will reach another milestone of joining a small fraternity of coaches who have lost 3 Super Bowls ,
Really should have been 4 in a row but we will move on from that topic
