D-Up – much respect, man, but the sheer enormity of keeping something like that on the down low is not feasible. Too many hands in the cookie jar, and only takes one disgruntled official to blow the whistle.
Think about this – people hold Gov’t security clearances where they sign an NDA that excludes them from disclosing classified info, and if they do, they face charges of Treason and up to 20 years in federal prison or even Capital punishment. Yet people do break those promises, knowing what they face and they have to flee the country and change identify to never get caught.
You think some ham and egger official who gets kicked out of the “In” crowd, and no longer gets his envelopes full of cash is going to go away quietly?
Reality is, nobody wants to be an NFL official. These guys get constantly harassed, they get death threats, and they get continually sh!t on by media/coaches/players/fans all season long. What you are seeing is just incompetence because the job description is putrid.
That said, I wish they would make these guys full time, and pay them salaries like they pay the players. You float out a half million to $1M a year or so for a full time gig with benefits, etc., and you’ll attract talent.
