The 49ers have not had a meaningful primetime game since Harbaugh got it handed to him on Thanksgiving night against Seattle at Levi stadium. It was one of the darkest years for 49ers fans. After losing the NFC championship the year before, management sabotaged the niners season by deciding to get rid of Harbaugh. He was a lame duck coach that year and after that Thanksgiving night the owner took to twitter to indirectly blame Harbaugh for the lost season.
Why am I bringing all this up? Because history and context matter. Sure, the niners have fielded teams in the spotlight since then, but none of those teams had a chance of accomplishing anything. This is different. After yet another year of rebuild, the 49ers are finally where they thought they would be when they hired Shanahan, and Monday night is their coming out party. Call it the "ushering in a new era" angle. A team comes out on the big stage to proclaim the beginning of a new era by putting on a show.
I am very bullish on this team and believe they'll win the NFC west barring a major injury. Why? They have best coach/offensive mind since Bill Walsh. They have a top 5 defense and an all world defensive line. Oh, and the running game is averaging 6 yards a play. Teams that give up 5 turnovers in the NFL are not supposed to win. Anyone who watched that game knows the niners were not going to lose, no matter how often they shot themselves in the foot or got behind.
So, far this team has passed every test. They began the season by overcoming their road woes by changing how they prepared for those games. They've done the same thing for the bye week because of last year's result. Yes, there will be some rust but I think once the niners overcome their early jitters, they'll be just fine.
