NE -3 or better: Don't give BB points at home! Since week 4 of 2001, the Pats are 11-1 ATS as home dogs, winning more than a TD on avg. Sure it was Tom Brady, but there are 21 other players and the coaching staff on the field. Bill O'Brien is 1-4 SUATS in regular season prime time games. The lookahead line to this game was Pats -8 with Brady and -3.5 with Garoppolo. The line opened at Texans -1.5. Is Brissett a 5pt drop-off from Garoppolo? I don't think so. This Patriots defense is GREAT. They held the Cardinals to 21 points despite two fumbles which resulted in 14 points off shorter fields and held the Fins to 3 points at half before pulling the starters. This defense is really good and I think they are better than KC or da Bears. TV broadcasts repeat highlights on Osweiler's dimes on Fuller, but other than that there wasn't much offense. Against the Chiefs, they scored 10 points off fumbles on short fields. With Garoppolo, the Pats once again showed that everyone can run this offense. Give me the home dog Patriots.
To be fair to the Texans, Osweiler was a couple drops away from really lighting up the scoreboard. Not to mention, they always play ultra-conservative and slow when playing with the lead. I think this will be the first big test for the Texans offense, and I'm excited to see if they can pull it out.
The reason I'm leaning Texans (other than being a Houston fan) is that New England is starting a 3rd string QB in his first start on a short week against a stout Texans team that really attacks the quarterback. The Texans are sacking the QB at the highest rate in the league. Bellicheck will certainly have a game plan that protects his QB and plays to his strengths, but Brissett is still fairly raw and struggled with pressure in college. Texans front seven won't make it easy for him.
The Patriots offense is complex and nuanced, and I don't think a raw rookie 3rd string QB will be prepared or have the precision to run that offense efficiently. Garropolo looked great but he has is in his 3rd year working with this staff. Gronkowski may not even play, and if he does I would imagine he'd be at least somewhat limited.
It's tough to wajor against Bellicheck at home in primetime, but on paper I think the Texans are the favorite to win.

I'm with you on Bears and Chargers though, I'm heavily leaning towards Chicago at touchdown-plus odds and I really like the Chargers against a Colts defense that looks like a mess right now. Luck will put up some points for sure, but I'll take the points on the Charger's as an underdog all day in this matchup.

Bears defense was really looking up, played especially well in Monday night game. But 2nd road trip in 3 weeks coming of Monday night disappointing loss. The injuries since preseason have piled up to become pretty significant to Fox and Fangio's scheming.
OUT
DT Eddie Goldman
LB Lamaar Houston
LB Danny Trevethan
LB Pernell McPhee
DOUBTFUL/QUESTIONABLE
CB Tracey Porter
CB Kyle Fuller
FS Adrian Amos
And 3 other DB reserves.
Bears offensive line was one of the most reworked in preseason due to free agency and injuries. LG J. Sitton and RT B. Massie are questionable this week too. QB Hoyer starting and WR Alshon Jefferies is questionable with a knee injury.
In addition to the mounting injuries the Bears defense with many starters not getting into full game shape in preseason has now had to be on the field 25 mins more than the opposition playing 140 total plays (avg is 129) and 67 running plays (avg is 51). Dallas in comparison has only had to face 119 total plays and only 41 rushing plays.
Not a huge fan of the Dallas offense under Prescott so far but Dallas still has the best or one of the best offensive lines and surprisingly has maintained one of the faster paces in the league through first two week (69.5 snaps per game, NE tops at 73.0). Just trying to step into the mental side of the Bears defense here and how after losing their top RB, several offensive lineman, their OC, and now their starting QB as well as all the defensive injuries how they get motivated for this game with the daunting task of battling this talented and massive offensive line.
Hard to make a case for the Bears here.

some of your reasoning sounds on point like your Panthers analysis last week
some i completely don't understand, like last week you acknowledged it was a HUGE revenge game for the Texans, and you ended up taking the Chiefs anyways
Yes, you are right. I prefered the 3 points with KC over the spot Houston was in. I would take the 3 points again. Texans scored 10 points off 2 fumbles with starts deep in KC territory. I also predicted Osweiler to throw 2 INT when I remember right. Good defenses force fumbles, but fumble recoveries are completely random. KC lost 3 of them. At the end it is what it was - a loss, but I saw my edge with KC +3.
BOL this week

I did my stuff and my line even factoring in HFA(Carolina has the worst home field advantage in the league) was Min -2.51. Not gonna lie I was wanting it to be me against the world so I hated to see you thinking the exact same thing but I respect your opinion so hopefully it will work out. I checked my numbers to make sure there wasn't an error and loaded up my account. Wasn't going to bet this year but I can't not take a stab at this. I went ML +260.
-Xavier Rhodes is back which makes this secondary truly elite again.
-Vikings pass rush is better both on the interior and off the edge.
-The Panthers safeties are god awful. Their best corner was their 3rd best a year ago and he is surrounded by 2 rookies. This secondary is truly trash. I know it's only 2 weeks but Diggs has looked unstoppable and he is PFF's #1 ranked WR.
-As you mention AP is out. He was playing so bad. I never thought I would say this about AP but this offense will be better without him.
-Carolina's front 7/run defense is stout but guess what, the Vikings aren't going to run right at it. As you mention Norv is a pass happy guy and they are going to sling it around pretty good in this game.
-Matt Kalil is out.... Who cares. He is been trash the last 2 years.
-It's a secret that Sam Bradford is actually a really good QB that completely revived his career last year. He has been balling ever since the midpoint of last season. Anyone that says he sucks doesn't watch many of his games. He is a more accurate passer than Cam and gets rid of the ball quicker.
-I don't know if it's serious but the Panthers best OL(Turner) left the game last week and hasn't practiced yet. Their best DL(Short) also missed practice.
-Stewart being out means a lot of inexperienced guys carrying the rock for Carolina. Don't be surprised if Whittaker or Artis-Payne cough up a fumble or 2.
-Mike Zimmer is the kind of coach that can get his team prepared and go win on the road as a 7 point dog. I really like him.
Good luck to us! Love your write ups.
Classic Swolesbee, great stuff man!

The Texans had 19 qualifying offensive drives (excluding kneel downs) in their first two HOME games. The result was 2 TDs, 5 FGs and 12 punts/turnovers. Their drive success rate of 60.4% (FO) ranks 31st in the league, only LA was worse. They have the 30th-best offense by DVOA. I definitely believe that NE have a better defense than KC and CHI and they are at home.
The most reasons on Texans are Jacoby Brissett. He was with the team all summer, he knows this team and gets Gronkowski back. I don't care if it's Brady, Garoppolo or Brissett starting, I would always take a PK with the Patriots and this coach at home vs a team that didn't impress me at all on the offensive side of the ball. There are 22 players on the field, not just the QB who doesn't need to have special skills in this system as Garoppolo has proven at Arizona. I wouldn't take this Texans team today at -3 on a neutral field let's say, in the playoffs. I see my edge with the Pats. Good luck with whatever you decide to play!

love all the picks here, but I'm gonna stand pat on the HOU pick. I get the odds, but logic and lineup says HOU is the shot to take here, esp now getting +1.
BOL on the lineup!

Also worth noting Patriots are converting 3rd and long at a highly unsustainable rate, so maybe the Brady-less offense hasn't been as dominant as it appears.
I dunno about Texans offense, yes the numbers are bad as you said (30th ranked DVOA on FO) but from watching the games it just already seems much improved from last year. I genuinely believe if a few drops were caught and Texans weren't protecting a lead our numbers would be more middle of the pack. This will definitely be a good test tonight for Osweiler and that offense, we'll so how it goes.

Tough to go on any numbers after just 2 weeks because its such a small sample size. FO has PHI as the #1 team right now.
Agree, any team who played the Browns and Bears could be at their #1 ranking. Football Outsiders is a great site, but it gets better when more games accumulate and when they dump their pre season data(DAVE)
Personally I like the Eagles D. Jim Scwartz is a nut job that wasn't cut out to be a head coach, but sometimes nut jobs make good D coordinators.

Alright Suuma.....let me hear your thoughts....about fantasy football!!! (Leaving out the Atl/Saints game....)
Is Jarvis Landry gonna have a big game....and actually get in the endzone?
Riddick or Sims (TB)....
Whos gonna have the most passing tds (not including the monday night game)....Leaning Rivers/Tannehill....maybe Mariota vs the Oakland D...Cousins has thrown a ton as well....
Are Demarco Murray and Melvin Gordon gonna run wild?
Who are the receivers that are gonna bust loose? Liking Travis Benjamin (Landry from above) and possibly Hilton (with Moncrief out)....
Any sleepers out there?
If ya dont got time, its cool. I am just bored and wanting to chat!!

The starting defense was mostly sitting on the bench
I have a lot of respect for you. Love hearing your thoughts. But this is simply not true. The Patriots didn't rest anyone. Rather Patricia went to a soft zone that was exploited.
Good Luck

This offense is a system. Get it while it you can. Pats in last 6 years have been held under 20 pts 4 times in 48 games, only 2 times vs. anyone outside of the AFC East.

Yep you are right. I trusted hearsaying. Watched the second half and it looked like prevent.

Suuma, I'm a little worried about the injuries piling up for the Chargers. I can't believe they are getting hurt (again) at such an alarming rate. The Addae one worries me most, Luck has got a cannon, but at least Moncrief is out. I'm starting to think the Colts use their TE's more to stay away from those corners.
But now Gates questionable on top of Woodhead and Allen...Franklin questionable. Crossing my fingers that he goes, they don't need another round of musical chairs on the O line.
Guess I'm hoping the Colts are as ugly as I see them this year.

Buffalo Bills +3.5 - pick of the week? Now that everyone has jumped off their bandwagon (yes there was one at the start of this season, as always people thought this trash team was going to actually start wining), I like Bills as underdogs at home against a team who just dominated a D-class team and is being overestimated.
Your thoughts?

Monitoring the injuries closely. It's vey confusing as both teams have uncertain situations.
