I'm sure this will be another bashed column, but here it is.
1. Why the Steelers will win - They will win the game through the air. Even with Willie Parker the first game, the Steelers never got going on the ground. Willie's 14 for 100 is a little misleading. They struggled to establish flow with the running game. Once they got behind, they had to pass. Even knowing this, the Jags struggled to stop the Steelers with 6 and 7 DB's on the field. Roethlisberger's 16 of 33 for 146 and 3 TD's are mediocre at best - but that was due to the poor first half. Najeh is a much better at catching out of the backfield
anyways. That isn't even the main point. Even though the Jags ran
through the Steelers the first time, it won't happen again. You can
point to the fact that Baltimore just ran all over most of the Steelers
starting D. That isn't it either. It will be Dick LeBeau's ability to
gameplan much better for the second game. (Remember them going into Indy two years ago and destroying the Colts? Even though you may point to the Ben "shoestring tackle" that was after a Jerome Bettis fumble on the 1 that would have wrapped it up. The Steelers dominated that game in every aspect after getting embarrassed a few weeks before against the Colts on MNF. It always favors the loser
of the first matchup the second time. In this case especially. The
first matchup the Steelers got caught in way to many blitzs and the
Jags countered very well. They were ready, the Steelers were not. Won't
be so easy the second time. LeBeau will be able to bring things that Gerard and the Jags didn't see last game. With S Troy Polamalu healthy, it could be the key to the game. Even with out Aaron Smith, the top run stopping DE in football, the Steelers will adjust and slow the Jags down. When they do, the Jags will struggle passing the ball leaving them in deep trouble. However, if the Steelers fail to establish some offense in the first quarter or so, Big Ben could be Big Bust and attempt to do too much. This would result in stalled drives and fatal turnovers.
2. Other things to consider - Gerard is the real deal and will be an NFL quarterback for several years to come. I just do not like his chances if the game is put on his shoulders on the road in the playoffs against the Steelers. Special teams will play a big role in this match up. The Jags have a huge advantage in the return game with Jones-Drew vs Willie Reid/Allen Rossum. (if he plays)

but it isn't as big of a factor as the kicking matchup. Josh Scobee struggled kicking at Heinz Field missing two extra points. Jeff Reed has a huge advantage here. In a tight game like this one likely will be - it could make the game.
3. Where the line value is - with the Steelers. This line will get crushed by the public and move and settle on a pick. I can see the Jags winning this game. They just aren't the more likely team. With no points to consider, the play is the Steelers.
As always, good luck everyone.

Good luck man, I hope you're right. Pittsburgh rush D looked porous in it's week 15 match-up against the Jags (Taylor rushed for nearly 150 in that game). Also, I don't think Davenport is nearly half the RB that Parker is. Davenport can't catch the ball out of the backfield and is more of a downhill runner rather then a slasher like Willie. I think it comes down to who can run the football and I think without Willie, that crown unfortunately goes to Jacksonville. You are right absolutely right about one thing and that is, Pittsburgh needs to win this game in the air, because they don't stand a chance of winning it on the ground with Davenport.
I'm a diehard Steeler fan and I'm here to tell you I don't like the match-up at all. I'm going to watch the game, but I'm not putting a nickel on it because I think Jacksonville has a fairly good chance of winning the game outright.

I know it might be that I'm a Steelers fan but I have to agree with everything your saying. Everyone is jumping on the Jaguars bandwagon and I hope it drives the line down so I can pound the Steelers. They play there best when there backs are against the wall and I don't see anyone even giving them a chance to win this game. Just remember what happened two years ago when they were supposed to lose to all three AFC teams. Everyone thought they would run the ball to keep the other teams "high powered" offense off the field, but what did they do? They put it in Ben's hands to reach the Super Bowl. THE JAGS ARE JUST THE FLAVOR OF THE MONTH.

As many as it takes. Hell, maybe I'll even start a "where is Bator post while I'm at it. Don't read, bet what you like. I don't care about you, I care about people who want to know what they should consider before going on either side. I'm just spending another 30 minutes breaking this game down for folks who would like some sound advice. It is some of the best around. Do what you will with it.

Exactly. Thank you. Good thing for us, we get a gift line that will only go lower IMO.

Very surprised to see the opening line.......Jags favoured by a single point. Given the Jags recently defeated Pitt by 7 ... and now Pitt will be without their leading rusher. Parker ran for 100 yards in the last match up so no doubt was an important part of the puzzle for Pitt. Yet the line is only Jags by one...a line begging for Jags money. Will wait on this line and likely join you on the Steelers. The line is telling us to.

Two nice insightful posts... good job walktheline. And you're absolutely right about this matchup. Pitt's passing game will be the difference.
But I'm with NJDevils - let's keep this quiet so we can get that higher ML by the weekend.
Why this total is under 40 though is a complete mystery to me... this line implies either Pitt is being targeted for a 17 point output (!) or the Pitt defense is expected to hold the Jag's offense to 13 or lower (more likely but still improbable).
