Browns VP Reveals Problematic Part Of Josh Allen's Game Which Significantly Impacted His Evaluation
The Cleveland Browns ended up taking Baker Mayfield with their No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft, presumably over Josh Allen, who was reportedly one of their final two picks. Browns V.P. of player personnel Alonzo Highsmith apparently wasn’t one of the people in the Browns’ front office responsible for putting Allen in that position.
Highsmith had significant concerns about the big flaw which dogged Allen throughout the entire pre-draft process: his accuracy.

“Baker Mayfield lost two receivers and he was the same quarterback,” Highsmith said, via the Canton Repository. “Josh Allen . . . big arm . . . he could throw the ball from here to the moon. When they have to make excuses. . . . Why are they not completing passes? That’s a problem.”
Allen has notably struggled with his accuracy throughout his entire football-playing career. But despite those concerns about a key aspect of quarterback play, his overwhelming physical gifts and upside were such that the Browns were willing to overlook his accuracy problems to make him one of their final contenders for the top pick.
However, Highsmith just wasn’t a fan of Allen’s lack of accuracy. He said he had Allen ranked fifth among the quarterbacks who went in the first round, behind Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, and Lamar Jackson.
It’s unknown just how much Highsmith helped swing the Browns’ decision from Allen to Mayfield. But as a fan of accuracy, he has to be pleased with the Browns eventually opting for Mayfield, who proved in college that he can get the ball to whomever he wants it to go, regardless of the receivers he has at his disposal.
