I will say if you don't stay fresh in this decade you're done-McDonalds actually owned and sold Chipolte if you can believe that....Bettman blew it down south here by not keeping ESPN..but in general, the millenials are different-short attention span, selfies, want everything free-gotta speak to them, market to them like the NBA is doing..make it hip, fast and cool, market the young stars..don't just sit on your arse!!!!!
This is a good point, but I think compared to an average NBA quarter, the 8 minute longer NHL period probably takes less time to play, especially versus the 4th quarter of any NBA game. I wouldn't mind seeing shorter intermissions but that's just me nit-picking. I think the pace of the overall game is fine.

Cant do that, any less and the ice would not be ready, they tried to cut intermission down to 17 minutes a couple of years ago and that one minute made a huge difference on the quality of the ice to firm up.

unless the NHL and ALL leagues world wide address the LACK of SCORING hockey is gonna DIE a slow death. either need to increase the size of the net 6 inches higher and a foot wider OR change the goalie equipment. another alternative I have seen mentioned is keep the same goal size BUT reduce the pipe diameter of the upper frame from 2 3/8" to 1 3/8" BUT keep the 2 3/8" around the bottom for stability. should have less "post" shots not going in.
as for equipment, look at what goalies where wearing during the "golden age of scoring" during the 1980's thru early 1990's and you will see what I mean. the leg pads were heavy and didn't go all the way up to the groin. the trapper was basically a first baseman's mitt with a round fiberboard wrist protector instead of the half blocker, half trapper "steam shovel" of today. the stick hand blocker was half the size of the current ones.
Yes good points Rink. I'm stuck on the fence with the whole net thing or other tweaks to create scoring. I am a traditionalist of the game however it's just a fact goalies these days are just so much bigger than they were back in that day that some goalies who are not even that great skill wise are able to simply keep the puck out many times thanks mainly to their sheer size and being able to "get in the way" of the puck. So with that in mind perhaps it is time to make the nets a tad bigger. I would love to find out the average size of a goalie in 1980 league wide and compare that average to the current NHL goalies, I would think it's significant and perhaps could be used as a measuring stick if considering the net size change. I just don't want the game completely screwed with due to the league being too watered down which is the real issue. When these coaches have so many guys that are really not NHL level players, they have to get those players to play a certain way, a certain brand of hockey to have a chance at success and that is what kills the creativity in the game.

No way would I want the goals to be bigger, that would just screw with so many aspects of the game. If they actually enforced the size of the pads then it would not be a problem. Also as usual every single year, including the year after the lockout, penalties are called by the book mostly at the start of the year and steadily goes down as the season goes on.
We have to change the rules because the talent level is down.

Oh I don't want them changed either. I didn't want the rules changed that they have already changed like the stupid trapezoid goalie rule, that should not have had to happen and i'm not even sure how much it creates if anything, because many goalies created offence by being great passers and making awesome breakout plays acting as a defenceman. I agree with not changing the net, I think it would be admitting defeat. But remember as we discuss this, this is not just about old guys like you and I watching, they have us already. This is about bringing in and keeping brand new fans and having them be entertained which at the end of the day is the name of the game which is a serious battle with the millennials and their short attention spans as touched on earlier in the thread.
Ofcourse my answer would be cut about four franchises that do nothing to help the financial well being of the league and this would help the overall talent level a great deal and rid the league of a basket full of players that do nothing but hinder the creative flow of the game. Ofcourse this will not happen, instead more teams will be added and the talent level will sink lower. This is the real issue.
So it's about what they will do and not what we think is best. But they won't just carry on with a ton of trap play and a slew of 2-1 hockey games with limited scoring chances.
I am not a fan of a ton of ticky tacky penalties, that for me just destroys the game even more and kills any flow it might have. That is not real creativity, that is a bunch of whistles and a slow game with no flow to it and a bunch of phantom calls along with some real ones and way too much power given to men in stripes who we should barely be noticing in a good hockey game. The last thing I want is those idiots determining the outcome of games more than they already do. That is just a who has the best powerplay and best divers competition.
Anyway I love this game, always will, just do not love this league at the moment and have not really for a while now, but will watch still to some degree because the best players in the world still play in it, even if they are forced to play in what appears to be mud on many nights.
May you rot in hell Gary Bettman!!!
Happy Canada Day Weekend Everyone!!!

Ok simpleton So please enlighten me with your reasoning as to why a country that lives and dies by a certain sport choosing not to bother to watch the Championship of the pro league of that very sport.......Can't wait for your theory other than the obvious lack of interest theory which is supported by cold hard facts in the provided link.
Hey bear, who won the gary cup?? I didn't even watch a "highlight" so you know I agree with your thread. No link needed

the "Marty Brodeur" rule was the DUMBEST thing the NHL ever came up with. I agree with P_B that if anything it HURTS offense. also sets up D-men for getting DRILLED coming back on icing calls

I don't know if you guys have seen this video yet but it's kinda funny. Colin White the Senators first round pick leaves Gary Bettman hanging in mid air for a handshake on stage lol.
