The thing is with betting that, whenever i watch a Icehockey game or any other game for that matter, all i can think about is lines... Lines lines lines. For example, whenever i watch icehockey i will look at the standard 5.5 line and if there has been scored a goal within the first 10 mins of the game then i will think that its a good start for over, and if there havent been produced anything i will think its a good start for under. I always think like that. I just cant enjoy a game watching it regularly without getting the lines to run in my mind, im railing the lines (O/U and ATS) more than the actual game itself, which kinda sucks.
Im struggling to enjoy watching any kind of game if i dont have any money on it anymore, i really am, and i hate myself badly for it. I remember when i was a kid a win for either that team or that team would mean much more and give me a much better feeling than the feeling i get today when hitting a winner for some $.
Dont know if thats how youre gonna feel, but i guess you will be going to miss the action of capping games if you are watching 2 random teams and not your own Blackhawks.
One thing i do like is to cap team total wins before the season starts and then just rail this team throughout the entire season and cheer for them every night like a real fan would do, this way you wont get screwed over by one bad night because the variance and unluck will even out in the long run when we are talking about 82 games. Just a suggestion so you can still have some $$ on icehockey and still not get upset or whatever you were here about losing it.
Also by betting before the season starts on like San José Sharks over 45.5 wins or whatever, then its like youre saying good bye to your money at some point when you have them locked for that long. But it doesnt feel like a good bye to your money like in the regular sense like throwing money on Blackhawks yesterday and then see them lose. Its not a good bye here, its more of a "See you again soon" kind of bet where you can still have a good feeling and enjoy the game. So longtime bets for me is sort of an investment in the future, where i think its much easier to predict how well a team will do this season based on this and based on that than to predict whether this team has actually planned to show up for the night or not... And in a close league like this NHL is then it really sucks if the team you expect to win take a night off.
On longtime bets i throw approx. 5 times as much money as i do when capping day-to-day bets but thats just because i feel more confident in the longtime bets, but still. Lets say i had 400$ on Blackhawks i would be 10 times more pissed seeing them lose yesterday night than i would be if i had lost my 2k$ bet on San José Sharks over 45.5 wins during this regular season, because it seems like what happens over 82 games is "fair" and says everything about a team, whereas 1 game doesnt say a whole lot because the league is so close and because predicting when a team is going to show up can be quite tough. So you dont feel pissed at all losing bets this way because:
1. You placed your wager 6-7 months ago, you dont feel like those are your money anymore in the same way, so actually winning something where you feel you dont have any money on it (because you said "goodbye to them by locking in the wager many months ago)
2. The result seems fair. If you have a team under/over 45.5 wins and they land on 45 because they didnt win their last game because they got unlucky it still means that they havent done too well over the course of the season and didnt cover the line earlier which is simply not good enough.
And when winning you also feel even happier than when winning something on a random night that will probably get thrown out of the window, at least thats how i feel.
Let me give you an example (from NBA tho but still same principle) of what its like, before the season i had 5 times as much money on each of the following plays than i would have had if i had bet them ATS on a regular night probably:
- Timberwolves over 41.5 wins (they landed on 40
- Rockets over 44.5 wins (they landed on 44)
Both was really close. But i didnt feel bad like losing either of these picks, because i know that over the course of the season Wolves had thrown SO SO many games away that its almost pathetic, but what if i had bet them in just one of the games that they had thrown away (thats a lot of games i can tell you) then i would be even more pissed and felt the result was unfair etc - this way, when they lose and you cap long time, you still have this sort of feel when railing for a team: theres always a day tomorrow. That feeling is non existant in day-to-day capping imo. So actually, after it was all said and done i wasnt pissed by losing either of these bets like i would normally be despite me throwing much more than i would normally do on bets, because i felt the result was fair. When Minnesota throws that many games it just says something about their team, and that all comes back to me for not analyzing that well enough, things like Adelman pounding Love for 40 minutes etc. That seems interesting to me and theres a lot of info here that i can bring with me into the next season where i will place more team total wins over/under xx wagers.
Hope you can use it for anything, and if you cant, thats fine too, just want you to feel good with your own game again
I just want you to consider, because maybe the longtime bets is something that will suit your taste as a icehockey fan and can still give you the special feeling that capping gives you. I have personally benefited from it alot. Having a good feeling in your stomach when watching an icehockey game is the most important thing tho, whether you have money on it or not - its all about feeling good. Anyways, whatever you decide doing i truly wish you the best of luck.
