I really dont understand the move for Giguere........why add $3m to the goaltending position for a guy near the end of his career..its not as if they will be winning the cup next year.If he gets a 1st rounder back as well then it is a bit different but if not,why waste the cap space??
Gustavsson needs some time. Too much pressure to put on a guy switching to an entirely different style of pucks. Toskala was finished in Toronto no matter what they did with him. Giguere, in my estimation, is just some insurance for the next year or so while Gustavsson improves on his knack for giving up giant rebounds.

I do see the need to have a guy mentor Gustavsson but the price tag is kinda hefty.

Real winners today are the Bruins who just locked up Hall or Seguin. I am sure that was another "great" trade for the Leafs though and anyone that criticized it was a hater.

Fuckin Burke..

Ian White is your best all around defensive player. Had a plus rating on the Leafs last two seasons and that's saying something on that team.
Phaneuff is overrated, I don't even think he was ever in contention to be on team Canada. Glad to see Yzerman and Co. are starting to see how poorly he can play at times.
Did you watch White play last night.........best all around defensemen.....not a chance. Fantastic deal for the Leafs.

Stajan - never gonna make it in T.O. (had his chance)
Mayers - LOL
Blake - double LOL
Toskala - triple LOL
Great news all around. Shipped out 7 useless bums for 1 stud D-Man and some potential. I'll eat 1 more year of Giguere's contract in exchnage of 3 years of Blake's (who should be in the AHL)

As a long time Leafs fan I love these trades:
White - average at best
Hagman - invisible 90% of the time
Stajan - never gonna make it in T.O. (had his chance)
Mayers - LOL
Blake - double LOL
Toskala - triple LOL

Bottom line is the Leafs took care of the following problems:
1. Get rid of Toskala who was NOT going to be with the team next year anyways. 2. Get a veteran to play in front of/with Gustavsson while he learns the North American game. 3. Get rid of the poor play of Blake and that contract.
Along with this, they added Phaneuf who is a tough dman that can get you 50+ points. His value was low thanks to his poor play so far this year and I'm shocked that everyone is throwing him under the bus already.
Yes...they definitely have an even bigger issue up the middle now with Stajan gone but ya gotta assume that Burke is looking to the off-season free agent market.

The people who are putting this trade down are obviously Leaf haters. I don't have a problem with your opinion but you're a fool to believe the Leafs didn't rape the Flames in this trade. Phaneuf will regain his rookie form in due time and will finally bring leadership to a captain-less team. Giggy is the x-factor. Toskala will do very well in Anaheim but Blake is not the same guy who scored 40 in Long Island. I hated Blake from day 1, awful locker room presence. A change of scenery will do wonders for Giggy.
Burke is a genius. Well done!

White's been a better player than Phaneuf over the past season and a half, but obviously you'd still rather have Phaneuf on your team in the long-term. You have to think he'll pick up his game at some point.
I'm not a Burke fan, and I had a huge problem with the Kessel trade, but I think that this one's pretty good. The problem is that by trading away three of your top six forwards and getting none back in return, they've basically guaranteed a bottom two finish in the standings. It makes that first Kessel draft pick look really costly.
Who are the number one and two centers now? Tyler Bozak and John Mitcheel?

The only problem is that they dont have much more left to give up IMO.....if kaberle doesnt waive his NTC,what other valuable talent do they have?
Exactly. All that's left of any value is Ponikarovsky, and trading him for another forward wouldn't really get you anywhere. I don't think Beauchemin is movable, so the only option is to trade Kaberle and Burke said today that he was going to honour the no-trade clause.

It would have been nice to get a draft choice or 2 in these deals today. It is my understanding that the Leafs will pick around 90th overall in the upcoming draft. I guess Burke is sticking to his guns when he said this is a shitty draft other than a few elite players going early.
I'm not sure what to think of these deals as of now but I do know this, the Leafs are very thin up front and THANK GOD THEY TRADED JASON BLAKE. Nothing I can think of that is harder to watch than Blake skating all over the ice and accomplishing nothing most of the time.
You learn more from losing than winning. You learn how to keep going.

As huge Flames fan I really like this trade for the Flames. Phaneuf is playing with no heart, and the whole yelling match with Sutter you could just sense something was not right.
The most exciting thing about the trade though is freeing up some cap. Calgary needs a big name player to compliment Iggy. It's been a long time coming!

I won't deny I hate the Leafs and love watching being this bad each year but this statement is beyond words. I like Phaneuf but playing in TO can't help him there will be more pressure on in TO them in Calgary. Flames have a legit #1 goalie to make up for some of his and other D-Men mistakes Leafs dont. As far as Giggy goes the change of scenery to a terrible defense team not sure how that will help him. As far as the Leafs getting draft picks, not sure I would be wanting that if I was a fan of them they dont exactly have a great track record at recognizing talent.
