tdd, always appreciate your threads, was thinking sharks,but every time(that i remember) you giving a modest assessment about your blues, they kick ass!    good luck this playoff season!

Potvin: Thanks buddy. GL to you as well. I just gave my honest concerns instead of the blind homerism that some others will give you.
 
In past threads I just passed along information and stats that you would have to really dig for. To me this forum is useless if everyone just list their wagers.
 
I want to read information and unbiased opinions from other members. Especially from the members that follow their favorite team, but aren't blinded by team loyalty.
 
I would love to see a Sharks fan come in here and give me their concerns to help balance things out.
 
I will say the Blues usually chew up opposing teams that aren't disciplined and teams that don't play hard all of the time. The Sharks are the definition of that team.

A few notes:
 
Brian Elliott left practice today aggravating an upper body injury. He is listed as day to day, but the Blues recalled Jake Allen for insurance.
 
Ryan Clowe missed another practice, but is still expected to be ready on Thursday.
 
Sharks are 18-25 without Martin Havlat in the lineup.
They are 25-14 when he suits up.
 
Haven't pulled the trigger yet, but the price will probably draw me in.

I got te Blues to win the cup at 75-1 during the summer before the season started, so you know who I'm routing for.  Hitch is a very good playoff coach.  I like their chances.

Obviously this team has nothing to do with this stat, but the Blues have a horrible franchise record in playoff series when losing Game One of a series. I have read that they are 3-21 or 3-24 all time in series when losing game ones. I haven't been able to confirm what record is correct, but does it really matter? They are both horrible. The only 3 times the have won a playoff series were in 1972 (7 games), 1991 (7 games), and 2002 (5 games) after losing game one.
 
To back my belief that David Backes is playing injured: He was held shotless in game one. That was only the 5th time that has occurred in now 83 games played this year. Three of those 5 shotless games have come in the last 10 games! If he doesn't produce some offensive and play physical, the Blues have no chance.
 
Look for Carlo Colaiacovo to take Kent Huskins place on defense Saturday night. It also appears that there will be at least one change at forward. Possible guys to eat hotdogs in the pressbox Saturday night include Chris Stewart or Jason Arnott. Arnott is either hurt or the tank is simply empty. Reaves might also be injured, so he could sit as well. Halak will get the start again in goal.
 
Neither teams top lines produced a thing in game one. Marleau (never noticed him), Thornton, and Pavelski combined for only 5 SOG. Perron (made poor decisions all night), Backes, and Oshie combined for 6 SOG. Perron had 5 of those shots, but did not see the ice as well as he normally does. He missed open linemates and also shot the puck a few times when he had open lanes to get closer to the net.
 
Blues defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk had an amazing 11 SOG, but most of them were harmless unscreened attempts from long range.
 
Blues fans are in a panic already, but apparently the team is not or else they are just saying what you would expect them to say. Here are a few quotes.
 
"We're hungry, we want more," Hitchcock said. "We're not living on the fact that we played well and lost. We want more. I think there's a fine line at this level between being 'happy to be here' and being hungry to want more. We think we think we can play better.

"You want to gauge it when they come in like 'Are they down?' or 'Are they up?' or 'Are they happy or hungry?' ... today was a day I thought they were hungry. Guys wanted information. They were looking at their own videos. All the things that you like to see in a team. I thought we had a very good attitude today."

"Anytime you're coming off a loss, there's going to be a little quiet in the room, a little disappointment, but you've got to move past it," Jamie Langenbrunner said. "These series can turn very quickly. It's 1-0 and there's nothing to panic about. I think it's just a more determined attitude in this room to go and get Game 2."

David Backes said Hitchcock's message to the team was, "We need more guys on board. You can't have any passengers. You need guys that are willing to go to the game plan and do everything they can to impliment it at full-speed with everything that they can. We're working on it. It's a work in progress."

Havlat should be good to go. What have you heard? I have not seen anything that says he re-injured himself. He should be good to go.

Stewart and Reaves to the press box tonight. D'Agostini and Crombeen take their places. CC in for Huskins to be paired with Pietrangelo.

LOL. I was glad to lose the C-note. If the Blues ever make it to the finals, I will bet as much as I can afford against them so that I either make a ton of dough or else they finally lift that damn Cup! I know my philosophy is different than most, but I figure I win either way.

I went to game 5 last night. Great atmosphere in the beginning and of course at the end! After the Perron goal, the roof was ready to blow. It has been a long time coming for the Blue Note.

The Blues did the things necessary (post #2 in this thread) to beat the Sharks:
*Elliott outplayed Niemi
*Blues scored many PP goals & won the special teams battle
*Limit the secondary scoring from the Sharks

I thought the Sharks forwards should have been more physical in this series, but they seemed to lack the intensity. I have always ripped Thornton and Marleau, but I must say Thornton played hard and well for most of the series and especially last night. On the other hand, Marleau is and always has been a complete waste of physical talent. No points in 9 games this year vs St. Louis and it appears that he was just going thru the motions until too late. They only won game 1 because Halak let in a few softies in that game and that was also the only game Niemi played well.
 
GM Wilson should have traded Marleau a few years back, but has now waited too long because of salary and age. It has always amazed me why Wilson always gets a free pass and never appears to be in trouble to keep his job. The Sharks simply don't have the consistency, intensity, and goaltending to win 16 games in one playoff year to win it all. Hell, they'll never win 12 games and make the finals with this nucleous.
 
Pavelski also was shutout, but at least he hustles. Dan Boyle has definitely lost a step as he is nearing the last years of his career. We'll see what Wilson does this summer. Can he get a team to take the lazy and indifferent Marleau off his hands?
 
The rough stuff that took part in the 3rd period of game 2 seemed to galvanize the Note. Andy McDonald played with a fury that I have never seen before after he took the head shot in game 2. His dominance in SJ was the difference. I must give credit to another guy that I didn't think had it in him and that is Patrik Berglund. He contributed offensively and continues to impress with his defensive game.
 
That 2nd line of the Blues carried the team while the Backes line was relatively quiet in the offensive end. The d-men held up in this series, but didn't take the physical abuse I thought they would.
 
Last nights win is big because so the team didn't have to travel all the way back to San Jose again and also gives them some time to heal some injuries. Halak is rumored to be almost ready to practice again, but obviously he won't play in another game unless Elliott gets hurt or has a couple of poor games.
 
The Blues next opponent can still be any team remaining except the Nucks. If LA beats Vancouver the Blues will play the Kings. You might get some rare 4.5 on the totals if that matchup happens. It probably would not occur until game 3 if the first two games are 2-1, 2-0, or 1-0 finals.

Congrats TDD on your team's series win.  They have a lot of good hockey people behind the scenes running the team and seem to be Taylor made for the war that is playoff hockey.

I wouldn't want to run into them on the way to the cup.

Thanks CE, but the climb is still long and uphill. I still have my concerns that I stated in the OP.

BTW the veterans led by example and on the score sheet. Langenbrunner scored the tying goal last night. McDonald dominated the series offensively and Arnott pitched in on the PP in San Jose.
 
I repeat that the Blues will not lose in the playoffs this year because lack of experience like many have stated. I read a poster claim in another thread that the Blues were the biggest flake in the playoffs. Huh? They were one of the most consistent teams all year. That is flaky?

Halak injury was a blessing. Elliott has been lights out. It would have been a shame for him to ride the pine after the season he had.

Thanks wiggins. Elliott might be the best individual story this year. He was signed in the summer to compete against Bishop for the backup goalie and look at what has happened. I hope his dream season continues.....
 
Thanks LRR: I listed my concerns about this team and they still stand regardless of opponent. I was tired of reading about their supposed lack of experience and that being the reason they will lose in the playoffs. If you re-read my posts, it was hardly an endorsement of San Jose. I took the Sharks simply because of the inflated price I got from my local since everyone else in town was on the home team. I have always been a big doubter in the Sharks and nothing has changed.
 
I'll gladly drop some more cash on the Blues 2nd round opponent and hope I lose again. Yes, on the sideways lock curse.  
 
In all seriousness, the Blues got the weak goaltender in the first round, but will get Quick, Smith, or Rinne in the 2nd round. I mistakenly mentioned a few posts above that the Blues could still play all of the other teams left except Vancouver. There is no chance for the Blues to play Chicago in the 2nd round. There is still a chance the top 4 seeds advance in the West. That means STL would draw Phoenix. They'll get the Kings if they eliminate the Nucks. They'll get Nashville if Vancouver and Chicago advance.
