Does the AFL need a revamp?

Way too many big mismatches on a weekly basis for mine, is detracting from an otherwise top notch comp.

There are mismatches in my opinion because GWS and SUNS have been hogging all the good players. The other reason is bad recruiting and development of players. Teams like Melbourne and Richmond have been picking up lots of early picks but that talent has gone nowhere.

This week you have mismatches because

The top team Collingwood is playing bottom side Port Adelaide.

The second best team Geelong is playing the second worst team and new comers Gold Coast.

Another Top 4 team West Coast is playing a bottom 5 team in Richmond at home in WA.

Another team on the verge of the top 4 Carlton are playing the abliterated Melbourne demons who lost by 186 points last week and sacked there coach during the week.

Of the other games the bookies just have it wrong. Hawthorn are too short, St Kilda are too short

With the Hawks there is a lot of talk about Hodge and Mitchell possibly being rested. Those two are key players and high disposal players. Something to be wary off.

If you draw the same parallel in terms of matchups in the NRL you do not get anywhere near the same lopsidedness as you do in the AFL. And even when you do, the underdog still has a great chance of winning. South Sydney were +14.5 underdogs to the Dragons last week and won SU.

Can you imagine any of the Suns, Power or Tigers winning this week? In terms of a contest NRL is a far better product than AFL

The AFL currently has the least parity of all the NZ/Aus semi pro or pro leagues. Daylight 2nd when you think about it. Only one that even comes close would be the ANZ netball, If you include that.

roos are the last team to beat hawks in tassie. hawks one day less break and played in perth in terrible weather. roos also have just sold game to tassie for next year so will want to try not embarrass themselves. i would say the line is rather sharp. and being a little bias roos i like the + points here for sure. almost keen to put a cheeky bet on them to take it. hawks very impresive at the moment but.

I've wondered the same question in recent weeks myself and am unsure how the best teams in the AFL apart from the rich are able to keep improving whilst the low performing teams seem to have no say in their future. But the NRL was the same with Melbourne always winning and they have continued to do the same again this year even after losing one of their best players and having the premierships stripped. I think that the AFL spends much more into the development of their list and sports science which is now impacting teams across the board. The best teams in Geelong, Hawthorn and Collingwood have been involved in different approaches to their pre season training and it's obviously a tactic that is copied by most other teams today. The only difference between those 3 teams is that Geelong get alot of country boys coming through their system and statistically, they are extremely talented athletes. Collingwood have the supporter base and coaching personal along with money to help secure young and talented prospects early on. Geelong & Collingwood are also the only teams who have their own VFL affiliates which is a pretty big reason why they continue to stay successful. Adelaide, West Coast who had the best choice of the SA, WA kids running around had to then compete with neighbouring newcomers to the league.

I gotta say that I'm an outsider to NRL and I still see the Dragons as the team to beat regardless of their recent record and I think they win it again this year.

Maybe thats because NRL players are no where near as professional and as a result are far more INCONSISTENT, thats not a brand i would want put with a league i follow. Top teams in the AFL you can always count on like Collingwood and Geelong, from a punting perspective it is brilliant

Just because the bookies have a team at 1.10 doesnt mean they are a 90% chance of winning, if you only go off the bookies odds for a teams chance of winning you are a complete mug.

This week the top two teams played the bottom two teams, thats why the odds were so short and good AFL teams are consistent, unlike those hacks running up and down the rugby field like St George LOL!

Of the other games, St Kilda and Freo went head and head all night with the dockers having a shot to hit the front in the last quarter. But the saints had a brilliant final fifteen mins.

Bombers and Swans played an epic 1 point decider, same as crows and lions only having 5 points in it at the end.

North Melbourne battled out a very close one with the hawks as i predicted.

NRL teams are pathetically inconsistent and as a result no one dares to bet big on that sport. Earlier this year was top (dragons) vs bottom (sharks) and it was a huge form reversal, how you could trust any of those teams is beyond me.

I also loved in that article how it said there was a struggle for which is the best sport in the country LOL, you have to love the league guys faith. NRL is more popular in QLD and NSW. AFL is more popular in VIC, SA, WA, NT, TAS. Then not to mention it has a reasonable fan base in QLD and NSW with there being two teams in each state next year. How many league teams are there in the other 4 states and NT?
Then there is the fact of numerous AFL matches clearing 80,000 and even 90,000 in crowd numbers, im not sure NRL get that many people to a whole round of matches lol. An absolute joke of an article.

That's because the talent spread in league is far more evenly spread as opposed to the AFL. It has nothing to with the professionalism of the players in either code. If you want to use that argument please explain to me how teams like the Demons, Suns, Tigers and Power are considered professional outfits when they continually cop 50+ point hammerings on a weekly basis.

11 million people out of Aus population of 22 million live in NSW and QLD.........

Furthermore, League is extremely popular in NZ and is also popular in the north of england.

The only reason why the AFL is in better financial state is because of a unified body with no conflicts of interestes.

This is not the case anymore with the NRL through the IC.......

Doesnt matter though, we still out rate the AFL by a country mile.

What was it, 77 of the top 100 most watched shows this year are NRL games.....

The tighter odds reflect the closeness of the contest which occur on a weekly basis. Unlike the AFL which turns into a snoozfest after the 10 minutes. Even TV executives are concerned of the disparity in the quality of the teams in the AFL.

Rostos I half agree with you but there is also another side to this.

Just keep in mind that SOO and the NRL are TV institutions just like the Melbourne Cup. People who don't follow NRL or have a team will watch these events for the sake of tradition because it is the done deal in NSW and QLD. The victorians watch any sport from NRL to snail racing, the will watch and turn up in their tens of thousands.

Numbers don't tell the full story. If the swannies get 31k turning up to a game but only 12k trun up to a roosters game does that mean AFL is more popular. If 38k turn up to watch the warriors at Mount Smart does that mean NRL is more popular than rugby because only 8k turned up to watch an ITM cup game ?

Soccer is the most played sport in Australia does that translate into viewing popularity for SBS or Foxtel. Not unless it is an international game with the SOCCEROOS.

ps. Fuck off to all the dickheads that call it football and not soccer.

bro your clearly bias rugby fan!! there is a reason the country has only adopted nrl in 3 states and afl is expanding with 2 teams in most states (minus NT and TASSIE).
