1) The money they spend to sign Smith (approx 18 million per) prohibits them from signing the punt returner long term
2) They pay the punt returner and can't afford to keep Smith, thus losing a 2nd and 5th rounder, plus LBer AJ Klein, in exchange for half a season from Smith.
The reactions to this trade from fans of both teams is typical. When emotions are involved it is impossible to be objective and not have a knee jerk reaction. The reality is, on paper it is a fair trade for both teams. How this trade works out for Baltimore will take some time to determine.

Do you know that Dallas has not played a game this year with less than 6 starters out with injury?
By the 4th quarter yesterday they were down 9 starters (out of 22)
That is life in the NFL.
And when your favorite team gets a couple of players back from injury, they will be missing a couple of new players to injury.
Depth is an integral part of every teams success, so when you have 2 FA's who you want to sign in the same off-season, and those 2 players become the highest paid at their positions, yanno what happens? You lose depth.
