Club and other members of the ClubDirt community. I realize this is unusual, but our leader said post anything. Here is a recommended early week diversion from Miami Herald humorist Dave Barry in his " Dave Barry's year in review ." He talks about the year, month by month and it is worth it for the chuckle . It is not mainly about sports, but here is an excerpt regarding the month of January :
" In sports, the LA Rams win the NFC championship game after the referees, on a critical play, fail to notice when a Rams defensive back attacks a New Orleans Saint receiver with a chain saw. Responding to the ensuing outrage, NFL Commisioner Roger Goodell says he will 'conduct a thorough review of league policy regarding power tools,' adding that 'New England is scheduled to win the Super Bowl anyway.'
This guy makes me laugh. Apologies to those who think this doesn't fit in the Newsletter.

Ken, I'm a fan of satirical humor and Dave Barry is one of the best.
BFF/HOU Solid line. I like Houston's ability to create offense much better, but I don't like their coach. The Texans can't play scared here and allow Buffalo to dictate the pace and game script. Kind of a coinflip but lean Houston.
NE/TN Only thing I'm sure of is that the Pats aren't winning another Super Bowl. I wouldn't sleep on them for this one game though. Like CD says, the Titans may actually be the better team but January in Foxboro is not a time and place I'll be betting on Ryan Tannehill. He hasn't faced a top 10 defense since he's been starting and on this day he'll face #1.
MN/NO I agree that New Orleans is the best team out there this weekend. The Minnesota miracle of 2 years ago will be played ad nauseum. The Saints have gone from good to just toying with opponents lately. The Cousins prime time curse will be in full effect and I don't think as highly of Mike Zimmer as some do. It's a big number but it's there for a reason. I suspect many will chase the points on a strong underdog. I know I won't.
PHL/SEA I expected the Seahawks to be favored. They were not, but now the opener of Philly -1 has flipped to Seattle -1. In it's simplest form, you have a team on a 4 game winning streak hosting a team that has lost 3 of it's last 4 games and in the process blew a chance for a bye. I suspect Seattle will continue to get the money and drive the line up even more. I think the Eagles will become a good bargain here.

ken, humor is always welcome. we can't always make jokes about homers like shrimp and anti-homers like bws. well, we can always do that but other humor is good too.
as far as the lines go, it looks like houston came down to 2.5 at many places. that's a big move for a game like that. the next two lines are holding steady and seattle moved up a little but that move is much less significant than houston. there are some major injury issues on both sides of the seattle/philly game. i'm inetrested to see what happens with ertz. even if they just have him out there running routes without throwing to him much, that would help wentz, who needs all the help he can get these days. i do expect seattle to run a lot, because that's all that coaching staff seems to understand. hard to imagine they'll have much success without their top rb's and against this rush defense, but seattle does seem to find a way much of the time.

The whole Jaguars situation paints a very ugly picture of former VP Tom Coughlin. He was fired for just cause, fining players in violation of the NFLPA agreement. Behind the scenes he was micro managing practices (upstanding Marrone) , told new OC DeFilippo how he wanted the offense to be run, and overruled GM Caldwell on his decision to draft Pat Mahomes with the #4 pick in the 2017 draft. When told he wanted to draft Fournette, Caldwell countered with McCaffrey instead. Tough to do your job when someone else holds the keys.
I don't like the decision but I understand it. Again, it's more of a condemnation of Coughlin than anything else.
As for Marrone, he had better adapt like John Harbaugh did or it will be a quick reprieve. We shall see.

The Texans are the only team with a negative DVOA rating to make the playoffs per Football Outsiders. Mitigating the situation is that the Bills are the 2nd worst DVOA team in the playoffs. The Cowboys and the Rams were the only 2 teams in the top 12 of DVOA to miss the playoffs.
