Why in the blue hell would you involve his family in this unless you want to escalate the situation in severity? This is between YOU and HIM, GH, not you and his family. You should know better than that. And sparty has a very interesting point regarding the Bar. If you are licensed to practice, you really want this guy filing a complaint with the Bar? All he has to say is that you loaned him money with the express knowledge it was to be used for gambling proceeds, and hell, might as well throw a few lies in about threats or drug use while he's at it. Sure, they may not stick, but do you really want to have to untangle all that mess?
You made a bad decision, and now you are paying for it. I'd chalk this one up to experience and move on. I think it would be a bad idea to seek any sort of legal recourse. Let's say you get a paper judgment -- you in another state than him? You really want to jump through the hoops to enforce it in a sister state?

exactly as a lawyer you would think he would know that. On top of all that he still hasnt addressed why he would introduce a complete stranger to his bookie and then loan him money. He couldnt figure out the guy is a gambling degenerate? He met him on a gambling messgaeboard

If This story is true: The verdict in the real world is as follows>>>> You've been conned while trying to con (don't jump as of yet). You were trying to get a percentage earnings (probably) with your local presenting him an easy pray and the thing turned on you (don't deny it, what other "good Samaritan" reason you had to take up on you that risk). If you can't take heat, don't go into kitchen - if you dont know and have no ability how to retrieve your money from a complete stranger - dont land him the money in a first place. And you obviously are not a type of a guy able to walk up to the guy with baseball bat breaking his knee. In general, youre paying the price for your greed trying to affiliate a fellow gambler, and since there is not a such a thing as fellow gambler - you found your match. You will never see a penny from that guy as he is experienced con artist if he was able to con you so easily and also is not scared as he gave you his whereabouts knowing you would not be able to do shit. If you really want to get a satisfaction, wait a year or two until its forgotten and then get your revenge. But the way you sound - you will get caught as so many cameras and other forensics are around you have no idea about. Sop, just lay off. This is the best advoce

GH I didn't know that you are also an attorney. Welcome to the club. I have to competely agree with Kap on this. I don't know what state you pratice in but based on my observations of the disciplinary end of my state bar association even if you are proven the complaint to be false the state bar still has an obligation to investigage every complaint and they will put you through hell and back trying to clear your name. I would venture to guess even if you charge $150.00 per hour you will spend more money in time trying to clear your name with a state bar complaint than the cost that you have involved so far here. Take what Kap and some of the others have told you and just let it go. BOL!

Wrong...they offered me 5% and I didn't want to be involved and instead it was offered as a rebate to this guy whose account it was.

5%? Going rate on that is 30% on the losses and I believe you would get that sum if the bookie got paid. Listen man, the story is becoming too unbelievable. The most unbelievable part is that if you were so innocent and naive in the world of gambling - you would get screwed many times beforehand. Do yourself a favor - write your losses (if any) and move on. Become a bookie if you already are not if you have such talents of bringing the players to the bookie (bringing the lamb to the wolf - just in your case it turned out to be a fox instead of the lamb). Whatever the going rate is, I didn't want to be involved and the rebate was offered to this guy. This guy became friends with me, lives close to me and wanted to be introduced to a local. I didn't seek him out. I just made a call and wasn't looking for anything other than being a nice guy. I got conned but the fact that the guy is still here on Covers acting like a big time bettor, wagering $1200 on the Preakness, is a joke.

I'd do it. This is probably what he loves to do everyday, all day. Wake up in the morning, log on to Covers, and keep the shit open all day and brag about his make believe life as a successful gambler.
Releasing his name and putting him on blast will make him run away. Run away. Far, far away from here.
If you're worried by doing that, you won't get paid... come on, Game, that ship has sailed, unfortuanetly.
PUT HIS NAME ON BLAST
*BOL* in the future, GameHunter...

I don't think local would be happy about you goin to authority. It sounds best to just write this off . And mkbini is right, next time if you are going to get percentage, ask for at least 25%. so whoever loses 5 digit you have 2500.

You either need to put his name out here on covers and seek legal action immediately regardless of whether this affects his family or not. Or drop it all together and eat the losses. Either way, take the next step. And don't worry about hurting his family, obviously he doesn't care about them if he is willing to trash his families name by doing stuff like this.

Just remember GH, when you take him to court, he will then have enough info on you, to fuck you over. Just remember that. Is a few thousand that you should have known better not to loan out, worth the problems you might face if you try screwing this guys life up? Like these other lawyers have stated here, is having your name thrown to the bar really worth it? If you are a lawyer, you should make this back on one case.
You loaned money to a gambling degenerate you met on a gambling website, dont you think you deserve this has one of lifes lessons? This should make you a smarter street wise person.

OK I take it back. I understand GH's frustration especially with the guy waiving it in front of his face on here. But I'd chalk this one up to a lesson learned none the wiser. GH, you should never have put yourself in that situation man

I thought you had lost your mind there for a minute. I knew you would come back to your senses. Man any lawyer risking his license in front of the bar over a few thousand would need their head checked out
