dude bookies are human I know plenty of them.  Call him up and tell him the exact situation you just told us.  Tell him you can pay back slowly and will not bet anymore.  The bookie will allow you to do this Iam talking from knowing lots of top bookies in the city.
 
Don't worry its only money tell them the truth and try finding a part time job.  You're only 20 learned your lesson now slowly pay it back.  Just don't forget about the lesson you learned. 
 
Take care bro and don't dig a bigger hole call the bookie first thing tommorrow and tell the truth.

There is a lesson here and I want all you young and even old timers to listen. Betting with a local bookie is very risky. Sure it seems easy but what happens if you get in over your head and you can’t pay. The problem Kev is facing is real and could happen to you. Keep your betting safe and keep it online is my advice. The online books never let you in over your head so they will never come and threaten you with God knows what. When a man talks to you about breaking your legs it’s not a good feeling.

This part in bold is nothing but the truth. I was gambling with a buddy, well I thought a close friend. It got ugly with a local bookie where we were down a lot of money and I mean a lot. Me betting for my buddies friend but I found out is was my suppose to be friend lying to me. I was the idiot putting in these bets thinking it was my friends buddy but it wasn't. Never ever thought he would do this. I was down about $1,700 in this whole thing. It was double what you are down now. Things didn't get ugly cause of people who would have backed when shit hits the fan if needed. I don't talk to the guy any more.

I Never ever ever bet with a bookie again.

DON'T BET WITH a BOOKIE and QUIT GAMBLING NOW. When you are pressing your bets you will never ever win. Cause you worry to much about "What if I lose this bet", "Where am I going to get my money from"

Alright I didn't want to answer this thread but I've had a couple drinks and I can relate. I was 20 years old once and that's when I started gambling. I wasn't betting dimes on games just $50 to $100 a game. Anyway I went on a horrific losing streak that I still laugh at where I went 0 for 22. I bet against Duke a lot when Laitner and Hurly were playing . Anyway I had no job, was in college and owed the book $1500. I, in ultimate stupidity, doubled down on the pro bowl!!! . I can't even remember who I had but I got robbed at the end of the game on a pass interference call that was clearly wrong. No instant replay in those days and I lost. Owed the man 3k and that was a shitload of money to me. I went to GA and my first meeting there was a guy that came in on a wheelchair and his story was sick. He owed his bookie a lot of money and they crippled him. Sick shit. I started a payment plan with my guy from there and got a decent job that summer and was able to pay him off by the end of it, thank god he didn't charge me interest. I will never forget how  bad I felt. I couldn't sleep either Kev. Sucked having my bookie come to my dorm room for his cash but it was the wakeup call I had to go through. Go to GA. You will hear stories way, way worse than yours and you will see what you don't want to become.  Bet with your head not over it and  if you bet again do it online.

 The only thing i'll add is ,If you find you  just cant stop betting.. , shut your computer, Call Gamblers anonymous, get some help NOW !!!
 if your family believes your  honestly trying to  help yourself, with this problem ,you'll have a better chance of getting some help or support from them, maybe even earning back some of their trust and eventualy....respect !!!

I went through this way back when only not for nearly that amount of money.  I had to QUIT gambling at all for seven years.  Since that time I have managed to remain in control, no large bets that I could not pay.  It is still tempting to go big when I am on a hot streak or when I get down.  I just play small and have a good time.  If I lose several bets in a row I just back off.  Often if I don't have a feel for the game I just don't bet at all.  You have received a lot oof good advice, use it.  Quit gambling, work hard, pay this off.  Go to GA meetings, thet will help some.  Leave the meeting when they get to bragging about big scores or big losses, this is not helpful. If you can't pay this off just move about six states away and work under an assumed name until you can save enough to pay it off.  Good luck to you, you may have to change types of jobs.

OP already got his second chance when his dad paid off the first debt and now he goes into debt again - how many of YOUR parents would pay off a 14K gambling debt without unseeming hesitation like the OP's?  1/500?  How the fuck do they not monitor what you're doing?  Are they that stupid to let you fall into the same trap?  I know my parents wouldn't...and if they did, they'd make sure I'd never gamble again...sounds like your dad is too lenient or you're just taking advantage of him....

I don't mean to be an ahole, but am I suppose to feel sympathetic after he got a miraculous second chance and then essentially pulled off the same mistake subsequently?  I mean, how the fuck do you get out of a 14K debt and then proceed down the same path again?  And now he wants to somehow " win " it all back with money he doesn't even have?  Are you serious?

goodluck man...im only 21 and dont bet too crazily...but then again i guess i dont have a real "problem" talk to your old man...dude you HAVE to QUIT gambling. Just work and you will slowly pay off your debts to your dad.

Kev unfortunately you get no sympathy from me either. You already went to your father for money and he laid down the LAW and you ignored him. Now you're in way over your head again.
Worst of all, how the f**k can you be betting $2500 a game if all you make is $400 a week . You will NEVER be a successful gambler because you're the type that would be up 100k and bet 200k on a game and lose.

My advice first is to stop gambling and tell your book you are in over your head and ask him if you can pay by installments because you don't have the money. If you've paid him before he should be OK with this but he will give you a rash of shit. Get a 2nd job if you need to.

If you need to gamble somewhere down the line in your life open up an account with an online book and NOT a local. At least the online books require you to front your own money and will not issue credit so you don't get into situations like this.

Your biggest problem isn't telling your Dad or telling your bookie you can't pay him right now. It seems to me your biggest problem is that you cannot face the reality that you are a compulsive gambler and have no control. You make $400 a week and you state you are wagering at times 1000-2400 a game. You are betting up to 6 times your weekly salary.

It seems to me you are afraid to be cut off by your bookie when in reality that may be the best thing for you.

Bottom line: Bookies want to be paid. You have paid him a lot of money in the past and you need to tell him you went overboard, made a mistake, that you will pay him every dollar and that you need to set up a payment plan. He won't like it at first but eventually if he sees you are sincere, then he will have no choice but to accept it.

Here's the best advice I can give you. You are 20 years old. You have your whole life in front of you. Look at yourself in the mirror and admit you have a gambling problem and have no control and seek help. Find out where the nearest gamblers Anonymous meeting is and start attending. Instead of looking for Daddy to bail you out, be a grown up and bail yourself out by getting help. When your Dad and even your bookie see that you are in GA and sincere, they will probably have more resepct for you.

From what you wrote above, picking winners is not your problem. It's betting beyond your means and chasing that is and that is because you are a compulsive gambler which means in the long run, you have no chance to win.

Give up and show your Dad that your a man now and that you are going to face this problem by yourself and let your bookie cut you off and quit gambling. Your $14,000 problem may seem insurmountable, but I assure you if you continue on the path you are on, ten years from now you can add a zero after the 14k.

Ask your bookie for a buyout. There is nothing wrong with this, the worst he can say is "no". I know books that have settled for .20 on the dollar. I'm not saying that yours will do this but if you've historically been a good customer, he should understand and possibly cut you a break. I wouldn't mention the gamblers anonymous bit until after you've settled on a figure, however. Let's face it, most bookies (good or bad) probably don't want to hear that their good customers are seeking help.......this infers that they may not be around in the future. In all of this you must remember the bookies mentality......they very rarely will cut you off even if they know you're in over your head because they know it will eventually come to what you have just described. They are in a much better negotiating position for operating like this.
 And remember, if he cuts you a deal and tells you that he'll still take action from you while you're paying your installments, he's simply operating as any other business man would. It's up to you to show restraint, and not bet him until you've paid off your debt.
Step back and reevaluate what you can afford to bet.......you'll be a better gambler for it, not to mention a more responsible person.
