He is exactly the very definition of an Hispanic--which is being of Spanish or Portuguese lineage.  It doesn't matter that he's white or not white--HE IS HISPANIC.

And I'm tattling on you for calling me names.

I never said that Sergio is racist, I said it was a racist statement.  For all of you who think that statement was no big deal, then why did he have a press conference saying he was sorry for making that statement?

Since Tiger Woods is part chinese, what if Sergio said I'm gonna take him out for some egg rolls, how do you think that would fly over? Or what if Tiger Woods said he was going to have Sergio over to watch some Seinfeld, what that also be racist?

That is not the definition of Hispanic and he is non-Hispanic white by definition on the US census!!!!!!

I agree. Like it or not the slur has a certain meaning to it (and we all know that).  

Ask yourself this -- would you be comfortable making a similar statement in a room full of black people that you did not know?

Your answer to this question describes exactly why sergio should of not made the statement.

gfinger -- this is not a very fair comparison. Saying that blacks eat fried chicken, watermellon, and collard greens has always had a racist meaning to it. I  do not know why this is (and am not saying that it should be) but the bottom line is that this is the case. I think that all of us in this thread know it.

And for whatever reason the same is not the case for egg rolls and seinfeld.

I am sure he immediately realized or was very quickly told that this is going to carry some very serious back lash if he does not immediately apologize.

But the real reason, I am sure, is that he was immediately given an order from adidas and taylormade that he needs to get this sh!t straightened out immediately.

Woods is mixed 8 different ways, so you could have taken out "fried chicken" and inserted just about any food and it would have been racist towards him.....

I do not think this is a new thing. Remember the reaction to Fuzzy's comments in 97 (I think).  I also agree that the statement in itself should not matter much but it is what it is and.

Even when a guy uses a racial slur that's been around for decades upon decades against a man he perceives as black, if you rebuke him you are a 'PC whiner.'

Let's be honest, Garcia apologized but it wasn't from his heart.  He was told/forced to apologize from his manager, agent, sponsors, and so on.

It's obvious he doesn't like Tiger and maybe he doesn't like blacks either. He's entitled to dislike blacks. I find it appalling that there's even an issue about it. It's no big deal.  If he is a racist, then let him be a racist. There's nothing wrong with being a racist!
