I personally do not see the differences between Iran and China or Russia or even Saudi Arabia.
Fair enough. I would guess that would be the case for a lot of folks. But if I were you I would question why everyone at the top levels all throughout the world, including the entire MENA region, do see the differences. I get that the average person may not have the time or interest to pay attention that closely to world politics and actions -- but they should listen and be concerned when the folks that do point out the problems with Iran.
When I was younger the perception of Russia and China was much much more severe than it currently is
I would question the time frame, if it was pre-Nixon or pre-Reagan. Then I would ask what changed and why it changed. Then I would ask if the same issues are in play with Iran.
that Saudi Arabia is as bad or worse than Iran with regards to religious extremism and abuses of human rights.
There are many folks that will disagree with this assessment and see one as far more 'moderate' than the other -- and it is easy to guess which is which. But, the case of grouping "religious extremism and abuses of human rights" in with sponsoring proxy wars and terrorism to try and destabilize the region is very superficial. Because one does not necessarily follow the other -- and even if it does, there are clear levels to it and that is part of the reason Iran is always trying to undermine them.
I am disgusted with how we bow to the Saudis and tolerate their abuses and the way they treat women, minorities etc.
Okay. The same could be said for a lot of places, including China, but, as I said above, that is bringing another issue into it altogether. You may not like it -- but apparently a lot of countries are not worried about that as much as they are the threat to their own countries from terrorism and wars, etc. How a country 'manages or mismanages' their own affairs -- including treating their citizens -- is entirely a separate issue to how they deal with the rest of the world. These you also deal with differently as an outside country.
No one disputes it is a good thing to try to get countries to get rid of abuses. But, at some point, you are almost to the point the USA and the West was a bit ago by assuming they could 'force' democracy on a people that do not want it. So, you can only go so far in assuming folks want everything the West has. Values from one country to another are very different. Everyone's definition of 'abuse' can be very different. You see this in ALL of the surveys they do about this in that area. It is amazing what even the women see as okay and a Western woman would clearly call 'abuse'.
But I get your point about it and trying to get rid of it some way. It is just clearly a different topic and that simply does not equate the Saudis to Iran.
