Pelosi is in California attending the funeral of a sitting US Senator - who also happens to be a very dear friend - and a very angry staunch ally of McCarthy does this despicable, INSULTING act?!?! 
Pelosi also maintains her own office in another building and doesn't need the one in the Capitol - even though SHE extended that courtesy to republican Hastert after she replaced him!!
No, she does not need to maintain TWO offices (despite that precedent) - but an honorable man would at least have the common courtesy - as you say, Midnight1 - to wait until after she returns to DC....

Elections have consequences. Unfortunately, far right extremists are elected who want to burn things down. No surprise McCarthy became the first House speaker to be voted out of office in US history. He was ousted for negotiating with democrats to avert crises of debt default and government shutdown manufactured by republicans. Now congress is paralyzed. What a mess. Why would anyone want the difficult job of next speaker?
