I honestly do not know what is going on here, but the fact that the intelligence committees and services had no prior knowledge to this trade makes me believe that this is a rogue operation by the admin.  It is not so overtly illegal that he should be impeached, but it is kind of a foolhardy thing to do. 

I believe that there are a few things behind this.
None of which is secret muslim BS, I never put any stock into that ridiculousness. 

-VA scandal, Benghazi, F+F etc.  I think that this adminstration foolishly saw this as a slam dunk win, to tout at the rose garden about "never leaving a troop behind".  Trotting out the "hired liars" to call him a hero, someone who "served with distinction" makes this look like it was almost a failed PR campaign, and I think there is a lot of that in this. 

-Getting rid of the worst people in Gitmo, will make it easy to shut the place down.  I think this administration thought that they could sneak this one by the country at large, because of the desperate need for a "win" not only by liberals, but a war weary country who love to be reminded of the heroism of their soldiers etc.  Obama wants to shut down GITMO for his legacy,  offloading the worst prisoners in vaguely legitimate trades makes it easier. 

-Believing that Qatar is going to be an honest partner in tracking these guys is a joke,  the Qatari government has already made that clear.  It is also funny how the media blackout of Bergdhal is blowing up in this admin's face as well.  Having the G-Damn Taliban release video of the exchange would be hillarious if it wasn't so sad.  Our govt refuses to comment, and keeps a lot of the "evidence" that he was sick and of the particulars of his service/ desertion sealed.  They are very tight lipped, and where there is secrecy there is lies in cases like this. 


I wish I could believe that this was part of some high speed operation, but logic tells me that it is not.  It is just a sad excuse for  Public Relations and Political Theater.  It was a serious misjudgement on the administration's part, and they completely misred how the public would view this.

I think there were rules broken with the notification of congress (not a big deal really, dickish, but not illegal), but the laws regarding GITMO prisoners are purposefully vague, not 100% sure on legality. 

It is a known fact that the admin circumnavigated the proper channels for this, that is why I am calling it a rogue operation.
