Nothing to see her..... Suicides only account for more gun related deaths a year over homicides by almost 10,000 but hey suicide is not a crime....

My point is how does the nra and other people at the gun regulation roundtable neglect to acknowledge suicide as the most direr problem concerning gun related deaths.

I get into discussions with people who are so concerned with outlaws, criminals and whackos getting their hands on guns, when I tell them that a high majority of gun related deaths a year are suicides they are absolutely flabbergasted... sometimes they don't even believe me....

Suicide is gun violence if it is committed with a gun.

Jumping off a bridge or intentionally overdosing on prescription drugs is also suicide but it isn't gun violence.

Shall we ban any thing if it has the potential to do harm?

Where did I ever say ban guns?

You're very simple minded cano.... Over 85% of the people that commit suicide choose a gun as their choice of ousting themselves.... Wanna guess why that is??

Of the 31,000 gun related deaths a year....

19,000 are suicides,

11,000 are homicides,

400-600 are accidental deaths...

cano, my intention in creating this thread was to show that people who often talk about guns getting into the hands of "bad guys" are really not focusing on the more direr problem which is individuals who harm themselves.

So shouldn't legislation be geared more so at mental health background checks and longer waiting periods, more in depth public health screening and treatment since we all know that outlaws aren't the most pressing problem here?

People that truly wish to off themselves will simply find another way to get the job done. If guns are more difficult to get then you see a rise in other methods.

Is it not a constitutional right for someone who doesn't wish to be here to leave?

I'm seeing more and more cases of murder suicide in the news it seems every day. We need to find ways to discourage that somehow. But other than that, if someone doesn't wish to be on this roller coaster then by all means let them choose to get off.

I'm one of the ones who think we need to look at stricter rules (reasonable waiting period-whatever we determine that is) and looking at people with mental instability. We do have to be cautious when prying into someone's medical history. We need to find balance.

I don't want politicians who are against guns placing unreasonable restrictions on owning firearms (long waiting periods) but I also don't want crazy people with their hands on guns. The VA Tech, Tucson,  and Aurora shooters were seeing a psychiatrist and they legally purchased firearms. In hindsight, which is always 20/20, they shouldn't have owned firearms.

I do not trust the govt. to define the exact parameters under which someone would lose their right to own a gun.

I am against making it illegal for those suffering from depression, anxiety or run of the mill ADHD to have guns.

I think the NICS test should absolutely test for mental health all over the country..

If it had in VA in 2007 Cho would not have been able to purchase those semi-auto pistols he bought. But because he wasn't ordered by court he passed the NICS test...

To me as a gun owner you have to be the most level headed person alive.

So you want it to be illegal to be depressed? 

Where does it stop?  

Who gets to decide what is mentally undesirable to exercise your rights?  Will it be the same people at the Huffington Post that postulate that conservatism is an indication of mental illness?  

This would open the door to a vast and unending chasm of rights violations, abuse, and illegal government surveillance 4th amendment violations, and a new arbitrary level of bureaucracy/

If someone wants to commit suicide you want to infringe on their right to do so?

Should we have a waiting period and background check for ropes as well?

Is mortality of the human race not part of the theory of evolution? Only the strong survive!

Djbrow pretty much covered the extent to which your post is as silly as can be..

People can receive treatment for depression and should. Guns make suicide 100% effective... And because suicides lead gun-related deaths overwhelmingly, this country obviously isn't doing enough to help individuals. 

You on the other hand can't grasp such a basic idea that even canov understood..

Oh, I forgot, people that commit suicide can't spend money on depression meds.
