Ms Pelosi has not confirmed any details about the visit – but last week said it was “important for us to show support for Taiwan”. She added: “I’m very excited, should we go, to the countries that you’ll be hearing about along the way.”

Tracking data shared by Direct.tv purportedly showed Ms Pelosi’s plane, a Boeing C-40-C, over the Pacific, having taken off from California, where she represents the 12th Congressional District.

China views the prospect of the high-ranking politician’s visit with enormous hostility, given it regards the autonomous, democratic island 100 miles off the mainland as part of its territory in accordance with its One China doctrine.

Bonnie Glaser, director of the Asia Program at the German Marshall Fund of the United States, told the Grid website China would “respond militarily” if Ms Pelosi travelled to Taiwan.

She said: “I don’t think that they’re going to fire or try to shoot down Pelosi’s plane.

“But there are lots of other ways that they could try to interfere with the aircraft that she’s on.”

Professor Steve Tsang, director of the China Institute at the School of African and Oriental Studies (SOAS) in The Big City, was commenting on suggestions by US-based foreign policy expert M Taylor Fravel that China and the United States were on a collision course over the issue, with relations between the two countries entering a “perilous period”.

A Chinese state media figure warned that the presence of U.S. fighter jets accompanying House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's transport to Taiwan would be considered an "invasion."

Hu Xijin, a commentator for China's Global Times, warned on Friday that "if US fighter jets escort Pelosi’s plane into Taiwan, it is [an] invasion. The PLA has the right to forcibly dispel Pelosi’s plane and the US fighter jets, including firing warning shots and making tactical movement of obstruction. If ineffective, then shoot them down."

Biden has responded with the deployment of an aircraft carrier group.

Asked how her circle of friends feels about the standoff, which has prompted the deployment of a U.S. aircraft carrier group to the Taiwan Strait and China to conduct live fire military drills Saturday, Hsueh said matter-of-factly, “I don’t think they really care.”

As tensions flare between the two superpowers — risking the worst crisis in the region in a quarter of a century — people in Taiwan appear by and large to be responding with a collective shrug, occupying their attention with things like the summer heat wave and local elections rather than the specter of war.

Such is life on the self-governed island of 23 million that has long served as the focal point of an explosive geopolitical standoff. The threat of Chinese military action has loomed for so long that few seem to raise an eyebrow when Beijing lashes out, as

Chinese leader Xi Jinping did Thursday in warning President Biden on a call that “those who play with fire will perish by it.”

Many in Taiwan say Pelosi can’t afford to back down, worrying another cancellation (she initially postponed a trip to the territory in April after testing positive for COVID-19) will send a signal to Beijing it can coerce and intimidate Washington.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is scheduled to embark on a trip to Asia on Friday, which includes visits in Singapore, Indonesia and Japan, as well as a potential stop in highly controversial Taiwan.

It currently remains unknown whether Pelosi will make a visit to the self-governing nation, as official itinerary fails to include the region as a stop, said a person familiar with the matter cited by Bloomberg. When reporters asked about her travel plans to Asia she refused to reveal any details, and the White House has thus far refrained from issuing any comments on the potential visit to Taiwan.

Taiwan has been at epicentre of conflict between the US and China, with Washington increasingly flexing its military strength in an effort to deter Beijing from making a move on the self-governing island. According to sources cited by CNN, national security advisors have been attempting to convene the imminent risks such a visit to the highly polarized region would entail, with former President Donald Trump even commenting on the potential itinerary.

“The China mess is the last thing she should be involved in— She will only make it worse,” wrote Trump on his social media Platform Truth Social. “Everything she touches turns to Chaos, Disruption, and Crap.” China is also not welcoming Pelosi, with Chinese President Xi Jinping issuing a stern warning to President Joe Biden over her travel plans. “Public opinion shall not be violated, and if you play with fire you get burned. I hope the US side can see this clearly,” he said, as cited by CNN.

Carrier Group USS Ronald Reagan deployed n to strait of Twain in lui of Pelosi arrival.

    https://www.wsws.org

The American aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan and its strike group, including a guided missile destroyer and cruiser, set out from Singapore on Monday heading toward the South China Sea and Taiwan.

This deployment, clearly linked to the planned highly provocative visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, greatly heightens US military and political tensions with China, which threaten to trigger a potentially catastrophic nuclear war.

Associated Press reported on Wednesday that Pentagon officials had said such US military engagement would include aircraft carriers, fighter jets and “surveillance assets” to protect Pelosi on her flights to and out of Taiwan as well as on the ground.

Whether or not the Pelosi visit to Taiwan goes ahead, such incendiary comments fuel tensions by declaring US intent to take military action against China in or around the island, which China regards as a breakaway province, and which lies just 160 kilometres (100 miles) off the mainland.

The distance is about 60 hours at 50 knots....

    Fox news.

The United States military is making preparations ahead of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's planned visit to Taiwan.

While the speaker's trip to the nation of Taiwan remains unconfirmed and without a hard timeframe, Chinese officials have already taken issue with the idea.

The U.S. military is prepared for every contingency and would increase its movement of forces and assets in the Indo-Pacific region.

Officials told The Associated Press that fighter jets, ships, surveillance assets and other military systems would likely be used to provide overlapping rings of protection for her flight to Taiwan and any time on the ground there.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was spotted on Thursday vacationing at a four-diamond resort in Hawaii despite an ongoing battle in Washington, D.C., that led to a government shutdown.

Pelosi is spending the holiday at The Fairmont Orchid resort on Hawaii’s Big Island, according to The Washington Free Beacon. A standard room at the luxury resort starts at just under $1,000 per night and accommodation can cost nearly $5,000 per night for the presidential suite.

The oceanfront resort boats six restaurants, a golf course and a “Spa Without Walls” where a couple’s massage runs as high as $569.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s plane landed at Honolulu International Airport in the Hawaiian Islands to refuel her flight to the Pacific Ocean, where she is expected to visit Taiwan.
US media said earlier today that Pelosi’s plane had taken off from an airport near Washington towards the Pacific Ocean to visit several Asian countries, including Taiwan.
Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, if any, is expected to lead to significant tension between China and the United States, where China has threatened even more fruitfully that its military is ready to defend Chinese sovereignty over Taiwan against American interventions.

White House officials quickly clarified that Biden was not announcing a policy change and that he was reiterating the U.S. commitment to Taiwan’s defense. But many Republicans — and, indeed, some Democrats — had hoped that he was, in fact, telegraphing a shift.

Rep. Elaine Luria (D-Va.), a retired Navy officer and the vice chair of the House Armed Services Committee, said in an interview that Congress should consider sending Biden a “very narrow and specific contingent authorization for the use of military force” to defend Taiwan. That action would effectively gut “strategic ambiguity” and allow the president to respond immediately to a Chinese attack or invasion without waiting for Congress to send him an authorization.

Luria added it could take weeks or months for Congress to consider and debate a war authorization if China were to attack. The U.S. would need to be ready to respond at a moment’s notice, she said, and that means being “less ambiguous” about “what our intentions are.”

Taiwanese nationals recently discussed China threat, US support and President Biden
Online News 72h Digital spoke with residents in Taiwan’s capital city, Taipei last month, on the biggest issues facing the island nation. One man defiantly said on the threat of a Chinese invasion, ‘There’s nothing we can do but fight back.’

KAOHSIUNG CITY, Taiwan – Taiwan is used to being threatened by China. Hardly a week goes by without a warning from a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) official that China will “smash to smithereens” any moves toward independence by the democratically-governed island of over 23 million.

Local media reports indicate most in Taiwan appear unconcerned that a possible visit to the island by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., could escalate into a war, and most doubt that Beijing will make good on the bellicose pledges should Pelosi follow through with what was termed a “tentative plan” to visit Taiwan during her tour through Asia.

“We’ve lived with it for decades and — for me at least — I’m pretty numb to yet another warning from China,” Lee Liang, a Taipei-based manager for a major international brand told Online News 72h Digital, adding that he’s not buying China’s bluster.

Lee added, however, that he hasn’t paid all that much attention to the specific threats of military action by China, as he’s been preoccupied with the tail end of a COVID outbreak that’s severely disrupted life here for several months.

GOP lawmakers are cheering on Pelosi when it comes to Taiwan
BY LAURA KELLY AND MIKE LILLIS - 07/28/22 5:30 AM

Lawmakers in both parties are cheering on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) as she plows ahead with a planned visit to Taiwan in the face of opposition not only from Beijing, but also from her allies in the Biden administration.

Pelosi is typically a toxic figure in Republican circles, where her unapologetic brand of liberal politics has stirred resentment throughout the two decades that she’s led House Democrats.

It would send a clear message that we’re not going to cower to bullies, just like we have to stand up to Russia,” said Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.),

Rep. Steve Chabot (R-Ohio), chairman of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus, echoed that message, warning that U.S. officials should not “cower” to the wishes of Beijing.

As someone who disagrees with Speaker Pelosi on most every policy issue, on this area, she actually does have a track record — going back to Tiananmen — of criticizing the Chinese Communist Party for their human rights abuses. And so I think it would be in keeping with that track record — and very useful for American diplomacy and foreign policy — for the Speaker of the House to go to Taiwan,” said Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.).

    Washington diffused State visit.

WASHINGTON, D.C.: United States President Joe Biden's administration tried on Friday (Saturday in Manila) to defuse heated Chinese warnings against a possible trip to Taiwan by US Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as Beijing announced live-fire military drills in the Taiwan Strait.

Pelosi is reportedly about to leave on an Asian tour that would include Taiwan, although she pointedly refused to confirm on Friday that she would visit the self-ruled island, citing travel security considerations.

China sees any such stop by the head of the US House of Representatives as a provocation, upsetting the tense status quo under which Washington formally recognizes China's sovereignty claim over the East Asian island while backing the democratic Taiwanese government.

"We have many differences when it comes to Taiwan, but over the past 40-plus years, we have managed those differences and done it in a way that has preserved peace and stability and has allowed the people of Taiwan.

If Nancy want to go it is her decision states white House

Chinese government now states it has not directly threatened the plane air force 3 carrying the diplomatic mission headed by the speaker.

    Newsweek.

no Chinese government official has directly threatened to shoot down Pelosi's plane if she does visit. Regardless, several media outlets reported on Hu's tweet as though it were a direct threat on Friday.

A Daily Wire article with the headline "China Threatens To Shoot Down Pelosi's Plane If She Tries To Visit Taiwan" argued that, although Hu is only a "propagandist" for China officially, he is also the "unofficial mouthpiece for the country" and is "able to say what China's top officials want to say, but often can't."

Air traffic trackers appeared to show the plane carrying Pelosi landing in the naval base in Guam in the Pacific en route to East Asia, amid tantalising speculation over it would then go on to Taiwan. China has warned that US will be "playing with fire" and would get "burnt" if Pelosi lands in Taiwan, and the next few hours will show which side blinked.

While Pelosi itinerary appeared to show she had dropped Taiwan from travel plans, speculation raged on whether she would pull off a furtive, unpublicised visit -- perhaps on her way back.

Chinese propagandist remove the tweet that inferred they would shoot down the plane. Chinese state said we did not say that.

U.S. delegate led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will land in Taiwan in just few hours. Pelosi will stay overnight in Taipei, she will be the first House Speaker to visit Taiwan since Newt Gingrich in 1997.

    Pelosi has some brass.

Dispute the relevance fine but she offered support to the Taiwanese in a state known visit and delivered.

    Obviously not a coward.

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House, arrived in Taiwan on

Tuesday, casting aside private warnings from the Biden administration about the risk that her high-profile diplomatic visit could stoke a new crisis in Asia and immediately prompting a sharp response from the Chinese government.

A United States military jet carrying Ms. Pelosi landed in Taipei late at night following weeks of speculation about her travel plans. Her decision to proceed with the trip — shrouded in official secrecy until the last moment — makes her the highest-ranking congressional official to come to the disputed island in a quarter-century and sets up a tense standoff with China that American officials said could lead to more aggressive military posturing.

“America’s solidarity with the 23 million people of Taiwan is more important today than ever, as the world faces a choice between autocracy and democracy,” she said in a statement issued as she was greeted by Joseph Wu, Taiwan’s foreign minister, adding that the visit did not contradict United States policy on Taiwan.

China, which bristles at any perceived challenge to its claims on self-ruled Taiwan, had repeatedly warned Ms. Pelosi not to make the visit. Soon after her arrival, Beijing announced plans for live-fire military drills, some in areas overlapping with the island’s territorial waters. In a separate statement, China’s People’s Liberation Army said that it would begin a series of joint naval and air exercises that would include “long-range live firing in the Taiwan Strait.”

    As for Pelosi hats off.

She promised to do something and did under high stakes International incident context.

Pelosi is expected to meet Wednesday with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and other senior lawmakers, according to local media reports.

For weeks, media reports have speculated about whether Pelosi, a prominent China critic, would go ahead with the Taiwan stop as part of a wider Asia tour.

China has warned the visit would be an unacceptable violation of what it sees as its sovereignty over the self-ruled island.

On Tuesday, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying called the proposed visit “stupid, dangerous, and an unnecessary gamble.”

“It is hard to imagine a more reckless and provocative move,” Hua said at a regular briefing.

Though U.S. congressional delegations routinely visit Taiwan, China has warned of a “forceful” response, raising fears of a major crisis in the Taiwan Strait.

Earlier Tuesday, several Chinese warplanes and warships neared the median line in the Taiwan Strait, according to an unnamed source quoted by the Reuters news agency.

The source said the Chinese aircraft conducted “very provocative” tactical moves of briefly “touching” the unofficial dividing line and circling back to the other side of the strait. Taiwan dispatched aircraft to monitor the situation, Reuters added.
