TAIPEI, Aug 3 (Reuters) - U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi left Taiwan on Wednesday after touting its democracy and pledging American solidarity during her brief visit, adding that Chinese anger cannot stop world leaders from travelling to the self-ruled island claimed by Beijing.
China demonstrated its outrage over the highest-level U.S. visit to the island in 25 years with a burst of military activity in surrounding waters, summoning the U.S. ambassador in Beijing and halting several agricultural imports from Taiwan.

If Beijing did attack Taiwan, even with the might of the PLA, it would have to mount a large-scale landing across a treacherous strait - and then face a dug-in, committed enemy fighting for a free way of life, seen as much more important than the patriotic justification to attack which has been drummed into the invading army.
Such a war could be long, turn China into a pariah for an extended period of time and kill the Chinese economy. Even if the PLA won, it would lead to the occupation of a huge island populated by millions of people who would likely resent Beijing's authority.*
As the case of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, China will pay dearly price for invading Taiwan.

Simply do not understand Beijing or Moscow at this point.
Their land masses are huge. So they need to expand?
We took a completely different track we formed alliances in trade defense and monetary systems. So we could have an expanded influence without the day to day grind of direct governance of other areas of the world.
Expanding Washington influence and allowing sovereign nations to self govern...
China and Russia seem to want to create a whole lit of hell and very insignificant gains... It costing Russia billions for what a 1% land acquisition be same with China.
Its ignorance and I am serious.

"As Nancy Pelosi's historic Taiwan visit threatens to spark a major crisis between the US and China, public opinion on the tiny island nation is mixed."
While many Taiwanese support independence and welcome the backing of the US, some question whether Ms Pelosi's visit is an unnecessary provocation.
In a poll of nearly 7500 readers by the United Daily News website, 61 per cent said the trip was "not welcome" as it "may destabilise the Taiwan Strait".
Only 38 per cent welcomed the visit and said it had "more advantages than disadvantages".
But according to the newspaper, the largest crowd gathered outside the Grand Hyatt, where she was due to stay, with protesters holding signs calling the Democrat a warmonger and chanting "Yankee go home".
Kind of funny not one US news outlet told what happened.

You won't find this in any US news, maybe Fox or New York Post. This is from The New Zeland Hearld;

That news site is deeply pro-China and pro-unification of Taiwan with PRC, end of story. Like polling FOX News watchers, will you vote for Pelosi or not? Easy answer, I assume.
