London (CNN Business) UK consumer price inflation has surged to the highest level in three decades.
Prices are now rising much faster than pay, making it more difficult for households to make ends meet. Wages increased at an annual rate of just 3.8% in December.

Biden admin raises minimum wage
for U.S. federal employees to $15/hr
(Reuters) -U.S. federal agencies have been directed to raise the minimum wage for government employees to $15 an hour, according to a new guidance from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM).
The directive will impact almost 70,000 federal employees most of whom work at the Departments of Defense, Agriculture and Veteran Affairs, OPM said in a statement on Friday.
President Biden made supporting blue-collar workers a priority of his presidential campaign, saying strong unions and higher wages could resurrect America's middle class while helping bridge economic and racial inequities.
Last year Biden issued an executive order raising wages of federal contract workers to $15 an hour.

According to the newly released Employment Cost Index (ECI) data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), since December of 2020, nominal wages and salaries were up 4.5 percent, the fastest increase since 1983!
These increases bring nominal wages and salaries to 1.2 percent above their pre-pandemic trend.
Unlike the monthly average hourly earnings data, the ECI data holds the composition of employment constant, so it is not distorted when, for example, low-wage workers disproportionately lose or gain jobs.
