    In a turn of events that should shock nobody, House Republicans have followed up their months of “Aw shucks, we can’t afford to pay our bills, we’re gonna have to force the country into bankruptcy if we don’t cut funding for the poors” But suddenly propose a $240 billion tax cut for the rich……How do people vote for these grifters !Just imagine if The Other Guy was in the White House.

    Apparently, republicans aren't really serious about reducing budget deficits that increase debt.  Historically, federal deficits tend to be lower under democrats and higher under republicans.  Tax cuts which reduce revenue account for most of the debt increase in recent decades according to Center for American progress study.  Congress budget office say that deficit reduction requires tax increases and not just spending cuts.  Besides, government spending on the poor benefit US economy more than tax cuts for the rich.

    For the rich? lie

    Politico; Yet you should know that the green credits are now estimated to cost a whopping $663 billion, according to “preliminary estimates” obtained by the trade publication Tax Notes.

    House Republicans have also proposed an across-the-board boost in the standard deduction that they say would help Americans grapple with inflation.

    Rollcall; The package is expected to revive tax incentives for businesses that have phased down or lapsed under the 2017 GOP tax law. It will likely bring back bigger or more immediate tax deductions for research and development spending, interest expenses and purchases of short-term assets like equipment and machinery.

    Republicans are also expected to include language raising the $600 threshold for tax reporting on online sales and gig work on sites like PayPal, Venmo, eBay, Etsy, Uber, Lyft and Airbnb that Democrats passed in 2021 as part of their pandemic aid package. Offering some relief has bipartisan support, though GOP lawmakers have proposed a full reversal to a $20,000 threshold.

    So, either give those who can afford electric cars a big rebate or give the avg couple a tax break.

    Yes.

    And of course the worst two modern day fiscal/societal DISASTERS which have occurred in the US in our lifetime were from 2008 and 2020 - both republican administrations.....the latter being from the trump regime.

    Yeah, Trump caused COVID. It's all Trump's fault the deficit went to 3 trillion. It's all Trump's fault so many states locked down.

    Yeah, Trump caused COVID. It's all Trump's fault the deficit went to 3 trillion. It's all Trump's fault so many states locked down.

    @UNIMAN

     Let face it the electric vehicles lobbyers bring a brief case Vs Big Oil boys shows up with a Brinks trucks so do you think going to win that battle ! Now don’t get me wrong here. As far as I’m concerned politicians are for the most part a seedy lot but the latest bunch on Republicans don’t even past the salt after they have eaten the cow! Any more tax cuts and we’ll be needing burro’s instead of cars because there be no more decent roads to get to work on!  Just look back in time Republicans haven’t been actual fiscal conservatives since some time before Reagan.

    And let's review your last sentence, Besides, government spending on the poor benefit US economy more than tax cuts for the rich.

    It again shows a lack of understanding in how federal spending causes inflation.  In this case, handing out money to poor people who don't work is inflationary.  It stimulates "demand" in the economy while doing nothing to expand the "supply" (i.e. in this case, work)... Talk about "unproductive people."

    In a similar vein, forcing student borrowers to start repaying their loans will be "disinflationary" in the months ahead..  Instead of that money feeding into the economy when it wasn't earned in the first place (again, the student didn't "earn" that money), that money will be paid back to the government as it should have been all along..

    @Rush51

     Are you old enough to remember the 80s, they had the idea of decreasing the deficit by aggressively growing the economy, via lower taxation, but that’s been proven not to work. So now I’m more in favor of increased taxation, and targeted spending cuts on things like corporate welfare. Putting more money in the hands of rich people just doesn’t produce the results we wanted. So I figure lets try a few decades of putting money in everyone else’s hands. For many year the GOP dominate politics with an agenda based on greed and power for the Establishment fat-cats, and deficit spending aimed mostly at the military industrial complex and “corporate welfare” But the top of there blow off at thought of a so called Reagan Welfare Recipient with a 15 year old Cadillac with all it hub caps! ….How about make capital gains tax rates the same as wage earners all the way to the top bro ? I think the CEO’s and board members tax consultants would jump out building with there clients! LMAO,At the thought!

    an_eek2  Please do more research on this.  We have been over this before in great detail on here.  Your whole premise, before you cloud it with additional things, is just wrong, and no reputable economist would agree with that premise.  As dicey as it can be to measure, taken solely as an issue -- the studies indicate that tax cuts actually do grow the economy. peace_5

     Im sorry nobody I know honestly believes tax cuts for the rich will ever favor them. But what matters is not the official tax rate. It’s the effective tax rate. But it’s quite easy to make thing fair & balanced just eliminate as many tax loopholes as practically possible, and set progressive tax rates geared to income.You see there are two major reasons for the growing income and wealth gaps between the super-rich and the rest of us. One is that the super-rich have access to a vast variety of investment income sources that the rest of us do not. Wealth begets wealth, as the saying goes. The second is that the super-rich have access to tax avoidance schemes that the rest of us do not (Elon Musk pays less income tax than the average upper-middle-class taxpayer; many, like Trump, pay essentially no tax at all, although to be fair Trump is beset by an almost comical history of losses from failed businesses on top of that he uses false numbers! During the 2016 primary debates, He said everyone does it!

    @joe pockets

     This is conflating even more issues.  Get rid of whatever loopholes you like.  Then what would you have the rich do with their money, sit on it?  Take it overseas?  How is that going to grow the economy?

    There is ample evidence on progressive tax rates, there is ample evidence on 'over-taxing' the rich -- they already carry the USA with their taxes.

    What exact investments do the 'super-rich' have that you do not have and that you think is causing a wealth gap?

    What exact 'tax-avoidance schemes' do they have that you do not have and that you think is causing a wealth gap?

    Elon Mush does NOT pay less income tax than the 'average upper-middle-class'; he pays more income tax than any person in the history of earth.

    You would do better to use Warren Buffet as an example -- someone who has nearly all of his income from investments.  The point is that neither has a lower income tax rate than anyone else.  What they have is a tax rate on investments -- a totally different issue.

    But do you decide to simply do away with this and then see what happens to the incentive?  As I said we have plenty of evidence of what happens when this is done.

    My main issue was with you believing that raising taxes grows the economy when the exact opposite has been proven to be the case. peace_5

    Joe Pockets is right.  Trickle down economics doesn't work according to Oxford university study of OECD countries over 50 years.  Tax cuts for the rich lead to higher income inequality but do not have any significant effect on economic growth or employment.

    Not only am I able to remember the 80s, but I remember the economic boom that "you" seem to have forgotten... RAIDERS has already suggested to you that you are completely wrong in your assessment of tax cuts.

    More recently, Trump's 2017 tax cuts were incredibly beneficial to lower & middle income , in fact they were "more" beneficial to lower & middle-income workers than upper-income workers..    And here is the data to prove the points.

    * In 2018 & 2019, real median income in the U.S. rose by $5,000 - a bigger increase in only 2 years than in the entire 8 years of the preceding recovery "combined" (2010-2017) (and who was your president for a majority of those years ??).

    * the average middle income earner paid between $1,500 and $3,000 less in taxes following the 2017 Tax cuts and jobs act

    * Over the first 3 years of Trump's presidency, Blacks & Hispanics experienced record-low rates of unemployment & poverty, while wages for workers at the bottom of the income scale rose faster than they did for management (so much for you lefties who cry "it was a handout to the rich." )

    * AND EVERY House & Senate Democrat voted against the 2017 tax cuts !  (just whose side are they on?  Certainly, not hardworking people).

     There is much more data that supports how the 2017 tax cuts benefit everyday, hardworking Americans, and is very good for the Economy.  You folks on the left just refuse to believe it, but it is fact.... And this notion from you lefties (particularly you JoePockets) that incessantly talk about how rich people tells me that perhaps people are unhappy w/ their own affairs, and look to others w/ envy.  (the media doesn't help.  They push this "big lie" of the rich).

    I will say that People that are doing well and are successful generally concentrate on their own affairs, and review how they can improve their own well-being.  Comparing yourself to others tells me "you envy" others.... Not good.  Again, your notion that rich people benefited more from the recent 2017 tax cuts is flat out wrong !  I will say it again,... wages for lower, middle-income Americans accelerated "at a higher rate" than rich people.

    The data is in (and has been for some time)...  The tax cuts worked... And quite well.  But I don't need to repeat myself.  Go read the previous post...

    ........... And I see you too are obsessed w/ the rich (and erroneous with your data).  Why is that ?

    @thirdperson

     I second that regarding Joe peace_5

    Trickle down economics is foolhardy  and its been demonstrated.

    TAX cuts for the rich are fiscally stupid.   It leads to rising debts which costs us in interest payments as well.

    Thanks, Thirdperson an_cheers

    Why try debating when you know you're wrong.  Keep posting your erroneous talking points.   It serves no one but your ego.
