So I am watching the news and a story just stuck out to me as odd. Apparently in texas several bills have been proposed to make texting and driving illegal. But up until now all efforts have been turned down. And apparently rick perry actually vetoed a bill that would make this illegal.
So my questions is this... Why is this even a question? Who opposes this?

Rick Perry is an idiot. This is a slam dunk no brainier to pass the bill. The drivers in this country have a tough enough time driving without any distractions.

I drive a dangerous canyon road to work everyday and thank my lucky stars there isn't any cell phone reception. It has been talked about putting in a few cell towers in the canyon and if this goes any farther I will be the first one at the public forum opposing the stupid idea.

Don't know about the holdup in Texas or anywhere else. But you are absolutely correct. It is so hard to imagine a sane person against this.
It is an epidemic really. Way, way, way too many people text and drive. I see it all the time. I don't like the talking on cell phones (hands free or not). All the studies show this is as bad as drunk driving! The other morning I saw a guy in heavy (moving traffic---not stop and start) watching a video on his phone.
It is a disorder or sorts. For example, remember the old days when the landline rang---people ran to get the phone! Now they have caller ID and clearly will know who it is when they look---yet they still answer the phone or text as if they are going to get shocked by the third ring, if they don't answer.
Another pet peeve is the people in customer service that, while in the middle of waiting on you, will stop and answer a ringing phone behind them.

i'm not afraid of ebola or isis or tornadoes or whatever the news is trying to get me scared of on any given day. i am pretty scared of people texting and driving or otherwise using their cell phones and driving.

My neighbor across the street had his parked expedition totalled by a young girl texting and driving while her mother was riding in passenger seat.
My paraplegic brother and I got in a huge verbal fight last fall upon returning from a ten hour road trip when I asked him not to text and drve 20 miles away from being home. Mind you, he does ALL of his controlling with his TWO hands.
As a bullet bike rider I am annoyed and apprehensive. I used to waive the Mutumbo finger at offenders I came across. Nowadays, I worry about wind eroding the skin from my fingers from such actions.

I think the better way to do this would be to use technology to cure the ills of technology. How about having all text functionality disabled if the unit is in motion?

i would add that i think texting and driving is worse than many dui's so i think the benefit of a law outweighs the costs for such a dangerous activity that people do constantly.

It's not GOING to pass...but I do understand all the DANGERS of this topic..especially all the idiots texting at stoplights and ones that don't go the speed limit because their minds are elsewhere

I hate texting in general, but that's another story. As for driving, I think the first fine should be $500 and then start suspending driving privileges on the 2nd and any after. A few of the neighboring towns have banned cell phone use while driving and I couldn't be happier. I hate even talking on the phone while driving anymore.... A few times I caught myself on a lengthy conversation while driving and when I was done with the call I tried to remember if I had been stopped at any red lights or if I had to wait for any other vehicles at a 4-way stop and I couldn't recall it. That showed me that my attention was taken away from my most important task (driving).
Anytime I see someone in a lane next to me who has their face or eyes down I blow the horn at them.

IMO bunny is spot in here. Just because it will not be full proof and just because it impedes on our privacy a bit and just because some people still will do it does not mean that it should be ignored. After all people still drive drunk right? Does not make it right.
Kind of like the heightened airport security. Is it annoying? Of course. Are there cases of "abuse" that we have heard that are wrong? Yes!!! But I can only assume it helps and this is an inconvenience that is probably worth the hassle and potential invasion of privacy.

We now have to stop at checkpoints in our cities to prove that we are not drunk. Probable cause is suspended and everyone is treated like a suspect/prisoner. The constitution is suspended.

Any new law could have potential abuse. I don't know it for a fact, but I assume those checkpoints are there for a reason, maybe because those are high-risk, hotspot areas?
Sure, we can all focus on the privacy/liberty loss due to the laws. I don't remember exactly the number but a lot of people died/injured in drunk driving related accidents each year with all laws intact. I can only assume the number would be much higher without them.
