(Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden on Saturday approved an
emergency declaration for Kentucky after the state was battered
by a swarm of tornadoes that killed at least 70 people.

Biden has ordered federal aid to supplement the response from
state and local authorities, the White House said.

Earlier on Saturday, Biden had spoken with the governors of five
of the states hit by the storms - Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky,
Missouri and Tennessee - to express condolences and
a firm commitment to delivering aid quickly

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
is sending emergency response personnel, water and other needed
commodities to seven states affected, and Biden has ordered
a surge of resources to locations with the greatest need that
will make other federal resources and personnel available.

President Biden’s approval ratings when it comes to both the economy and his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic have taken a big hit in a new poll.

Biden’s overall approval remained at the low level of 41 percent in CNBC’s latest quarterly All-America Economic survey.

More notably, approval of the White House response to the pandemic dropped to 46 percent compared to 48 percent disapproval — putting the president underwater in that category for the first time.

The approval rating for Biden’s handling of the economy sank to 37 percent compared to 56 percent disapproval.

McConnell praises President Joe Biden's
"rapid support" for Kentucky after tornadoes

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Monday
praised President Biden for his "rapid support" in the wake of
deadly tornadoes that tore through several states, including Kentucky.

McConnell later wrote to Biden applauding the declaration,
saying he appreciates "the administration's quick work
to speed resources to help deal with this crisis."
 The letter is signed by Republican Sen. Rand Paul.

McConnell added:

      "President Biden cut through the red tape to approve
       our request at an accelerated pace providing the rapid
       support we need to recover.
       Even in the face of such tragedy, we can be confident
       that Kentucky will bounce back."

Biden administration announces plan to protect communities against toxic lead.  Water pipes to be replaced as part of bipartisan infrastructure deal.  Environmental protection agency to regulate lead content in products. This could improve the health of up to 10 million households plus 400,000 schools and child care centers.
