President Biden to make 20,000 additional guest-worker visas available this winter amid labor shortages

DHS has previously upped the number of available visas for the summer season, which is among the busiest for bringing in workers, citing labor shortages. Monday's announcement of 20,000 visas are in addition to the 33,000 visas made available for people employed the first half of the fiscal year, October 1 to March 31.

Gov. Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas thanked President Joe Biden for his efforts to "depoliticize" the country's COVID-19 response amid the raging Omicron variant.

The Republican leader made the comments during a conference call held by the Biden administration with the governors of several states.

      "I want to thank all of the White House team
       for being such GREAT support to the governors,"
                                        Hutchinson said during his opening remarks.
"And I want to thank Mr. President -
your address to the nation last week. Thank you for
your comments designed to depoliticize our COVID
response.  I think that was very helpful."

The bill would provide billions in funding for manufacturing and R&D grants, invest heavily in advanced manufacturing and semiconductor research, establish public-private partnerships focused on the development of advanced microelectronics, and secure supply chains.

Today, for many US companies, it's simply not financially competitive to produce semiconductors domestically. Chipmakers can face more than a 30% cost disadvantage when making semiconductors in the US instead of Asia. This has driven a steady decline in America's share of global semiconductor manufacturing, which has dropped from 37% in 1990 to 12% in 2020. Europe's share has dropped from 44% to just 9% in the same time frame. Without government action, we cannot reach our ultimate goal of a globally balanced silicon capacity and a resilient supply chain -- which is significantly driving inflation here.
