(Bloomberg) — Federal Reserve officials dialed back their expectations for interest rate cuts this year, though Chair Jerome Powell kept the door open for more as he emphasized the new forecasts represented a conservative approach. 

Policymakers’ updated economic projections, published after a two-day policy meeting in Washington on Wednesday, showed they expected to lower borrowing costs only once in 2024 instead of the three reductions penciled in previously, according to their median estimate.? 

They also raised their forecasts for inflation, even after better data on consumer prices published earlier in the day provided cause for optimism. 

“There’s still the possibility of two rate cuts this year, starting as soon as September, but they need the data to comply and kind of bolster their confidence,” said Kathy Bostjancic, chief economist at Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. “Being conservative, it’s understandable. They are erring on the side of conservatism. I think the door’s still wide open.” 

The US central bank’s policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee decided to hold its benchmark rate steady in a range of 5.25% to 5.5%, the highest level in more than two decades, for a seventh straight meeting. Investors currently see two rate cuts this year, with better-than-even odds of an initial reduction in September, according to futures. 

Earlier on June 12, the Bureau of Labor Statistics published figures showing a key measure of underlying inflation cooled for a second straight month in May, following elevated readings to begin the year. 

Powell called the numbers “encouraging” and hinted that the new consumer price index figures may not be fully reflected in policymakers’ latest quarterly projections.? 

Although the committee was briefed on them, he said “most people generally don’t” update their projections when such data arrive in the middle of policy meetings. Officials marked up their forecast for inflation excluding food and energy to 2.8% in 2024 from 2.6%, implying little additional progress over the course of the year from current levels. 

“Chair Powell used the press conference to diminish the importance of these projections and made a point of indicating that ‘most’ officials likely did not incorporate today’s softer-than-expected inflation reading in their economic projections and ‘dots,’ rendering them stale,” Citigroup Inc. economists led by Andrew Hollenhorst said in a note to clients, referring to the “dot plot” of rate projections. 

In trying to determine the appropriate timing for rate cuts, the Fed is grappling with uncertainty over the impact tight monetary policy is having on the economy. Job growth and consumer spending have been surprisingly resilient despite high borrowing costs. Inflation, meanwhile, has cooled substantially following a sharp acceleration during the pandemic, though it still remains above the Fed’s 2% target. 

The Fed chair said officials are carefully considering both upside and downside risks. He also emphasized a split within the committee: The “dot plot” showed seven officials expected one rate cut this year, while eight saw two and four expected none. 

“Powell really leaned into the close split between the one-cut median and the two-cut mode, whereas last time, when the March median implied three cuts — with many for fewer — he was quite happy to leave it be,” said Derek Tang, an economist with LH Meyer/Monetary Policy Analytics. 

Officials also lifted their estimates of where rates will settle in the longer term to 2.8%, up from 2.6% at the March gathering, according to the median projection. The increase, following a slight bump in March, has been fueled in part by the recent resilience of the economy. 

“People have gradually been writing it up because I just think people are coming to the view that rates are less likely to go down to their pre-pandemic levels,” Powell said. 

Some officials, including Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan, have said higher borrowing costs may not be slowing the economy as much as previously thought. Others, like New York Fed President John Williams, maintain policy is well positioned to bring inflation down to the Fed’s goal. 

“The question of whether it’s sufficiently restrictive is going to be one we know over time,” Powell said. “The evidence is pretty clear that policy is restrictive and is having the effects that we would hope for.”

I am glad that I got it through your skull that your income rate did not go up.  The SALT was simply done away with.

I have written on here before how this is deceptive and is bad tax policy.  It complicates the tax code unnecessarily.  It is also unfair to lower income folks and folks that live in lower-taxed states.

Very few people that earn less than 50K use it because they do not itemize.  Very few people that earn over 3-5M can use SALT either, they have to use AMT, etc.

It is NOT a double tax — it is another tax(s); two very different things.

Just because someone earns a lot of money or chooses to live in a state that has higher taxes should not mean that they should get a break on Federal taxes.

People choose higher paying jobs in higher municipalities and states — that should not mean they deserve a tax break just for those reasons.  More than half of this deduction was coming from use in only 6-7.

This is essentially 100B removal of money that would otherwise be paid.

The Left is always bellyaching that the richer do not pay enough taxes.  But when it comes right down to it — they do not want to pay more when it is them doing the paying.

But what happened.  Nearly all of these states set up a workaround anyway.

The Federal Tax Code should be simpler and more straightforward.

If states or municipalities want to adjust their codes differently—that should be their choice.

If folks want to live there or elect officials that do that—that should be their choice.

Not to mention so many of these policies lead people to make bad financial decisions and put themselves in situations they would otherwise not be in.  Like buying too much house simply because they know the tax break is there, or implying it is a good thing to keep a mortgage just to get a ‘tax break’.  Both of which are faulty logic.

There are also point to be made that this is a pseudo-subsidy of sorts from other states and for middle-income folks that are spending too much for their income.

Either way folk’s taxes did not go up; they simply  had their ‘freebies’ taken from them.

People never like for programs that benefit them to be cut or done away with.  Once people start getting something for free, or that they do not really deserve, they do not want to lose it.

- it's well-established that tariffs cause inflation, it's basic economic policy 

- Trump proudly introduced a ton of inflation-causing tariffs

- tariffs don't increase costs overnight, it takes time

- I hate that Biden kept the tariffs and added more, they're poor economic policy

- I'm a centrist, that's why I am critical of Biden too

No they do not; and, no it isn’t.  They may have a minor contribution, especially in that particular sector.

But you are implying tariffs caused the massive current runup in inflation.  It did not.

For example, this is just one Economist’s look at it:

• The timing of the tariffs clearly shows no correlation with inflation and eliminating tariffs could not plausibly restrain it. The bulk of the tariffs were in place before 2020, yet inflation only began accelerating in March 2021. Clearly, inflation was driven by many sources besides tariffs.
• In theory, tariffs do not need to have caused inflation for their removal to help restrain it. In practice, however, the size of the tariffs introduced after 2016 are simply insufficient for their removal to make a dent in current inflation. A top-down estimate that compares tariff revenue (a good proxy for the upper bound on price effects) with personal consumption expenditures shows that removing all 2016 tariffs would lead to a one-time, 0.3-percentage-point reduction in consumer prices.
• In the best-case scenario, eliminating tariffs would offset just 7.2% of the total increase in consumer prices, but provide no buffer to price increases thereafter.
• If tariff removal was costless, then it would be worth considering. But it is not costless. The current global supply chain chaos is just the latest sign that global trade needs to be rebalanced and the U.S. manufacturing footprint should be reinforced. Until a coherent overall strategy is put into place, tariffs can give key industries breathing room.

There are also some great links that discuss it in detail as well.  But simply no economists blame it on tariffs. 
You should also go read the thread on taxes again; especially the part on SALT. 

If you are truly a ‘centrist’ you will see what they are talking about.  
For sure, I understand it is harder and frustrating when it directly affects you and your pocketbook. Because I realize you have gotten used to it.
