According to American civil liberty union, voter ID laws deprive many Americans the right to vote. 2-3% reduction in voter turnout in 2014 GAO study. 11% or 21 million of US citizens lack government issued photo ID. Especially among low income, minorities, elderly, young or disabled. Voter ID laws are discriminatory affecting up to 25% of black Americans. Some ID cards may be unacceptable such as for students, veterans and employees. Besides, obtaining ID costs money even if offered for free. Voter ID laws are a waste of taxpayers money. For example, Indiana spend over $10 million to provide free ID cards between 2007 and 2010. Voter ID requirements are a solution in search of a problem. Voting fraud is very rare. Since 2000, there were only 31 credible allegations of voter impersonation in over one billion ballots casted.

@Snorkel
Snorkie,
What does your kids social security number have to do with Voting ID laws? Social security numbers are not on your drivers license or government issued ID. So presenting a standard ID does not solve that problem or confirm a social security number. Not sure what your point is there. Non-citizens can also apply for a social security number, so again that really does not prove or solve anything.
Voter ID laws are attempts to suppress the votes of working class citizens, and minority communities. Many of these people do not have cars and therefore do not have a license. Many city dwellers take public transportation. Poor people do not have the time or money to get the documents needed to apply for a license, or do not have the option to take off work for a day to try and go to the DMV to get a license or government issued ID.
This is not complicated, Voter ID laws are a waste.

haha. That is not how this country works, nor has it been for hundreds of years. There is NOT one tenet in the U.S. Constitution, which conveys and protects voting rights, which says that a government issued id or photo of yourself is needed to secure your right to vote. Talk about unconstitutional.
I thought you folks on the far right were all about constitutional rights, and originalists?
When you register to vote you are already "proving it." ID does not prove citizenship or anything else.
What a terrible perspective ha.

Cool story. It isn't a federal law and never was, that is the point.
My handle says where I live. You prove citizenship when you register, No ID necessary.
When I go to vote, and drop off my mail in ballot in person, ID is NOT required, and quite frankly isn't necessary.
Just another pointless step in states that require it.

"While the United States Constitution does set parameters for the election of federal officials, state law, not federal, regulates most aspects of elections in the U.S., including primaries, the eligibility of voters....." Yep, isn't a federal law and never was.....duh!
If voter required ID is so biased than go out and get ID issued to those "21 million" without. Not hard to do.
But noooooooo, can't do that!!!! WHY NOT? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

The U.S. Constitution provides citizens right to vote plain and simple, not the states. That is the point sir. Voter ID isn't a part of it.
I summed this up already. Cost, lack of transportation to get to the DMV, inability to get days off work to spend all day in a DMV getting a license. Can't comprehend any of these issues because I am sure you lack empathy or the ability to see from the point of the view from the poor. Being poor or without a car to get to the DMV should not disqualify you from voting because you can't get an ID.
I wonder why Republicans are so obsessed with a meaningless voter ID requirement?... HMMMMMMMMMMMMM.

Great idea. I am sure those Republican led states are rushing to get all of those voters without ID, government issued ID's to vote in upcoming elections.
Not hard to do right? If Republicans are so concerned about voter fraud shouldn't Republican leaders be suggesting this approach? Funny have not heard one of them push to get voters without ID's fresh licenses or government issued IDs. I wonder why not??? HMMMMM.

I ain't buying the time, money, etc thing that the "poor" or whoever doesn't have the means to get an official ID. Why charge anything? This is all about securing votes from those not eligible! Why is this okay. Shouldn't even be a subject. Deezy, Why do think Dems want to make Puerto Rico state?

Good thing it doesn't matter if you "buy" it or not.
Securing votes from those not eligible? What makes someone without an ID ineligible if they are citizens? Not sure what you are getting at there.
If you do not have an ID, that does not mean you are not eligible to vote.
Last time I checked, if you are a citizen, you are eligible to vote according to the Constitution. Having an ID is not a prerequisite.
Some Dem Congress members, not even close to 50% of Dems in Congress, want to make Puerto Rico a state because it is a U.S. territory, and has been for quite some time. Not sure how this ties into discussion about outdated, predatory, Voting ID laws though.
ID's do not prove citizenship, and non-citizens/undocumented citizens are obviously not voting, so not sure why it matters to your Republicans so much. Actually, I do know, you do not want poor, working class, minorities showing up to vote.
The illegal immigrant voting talking point is just not backed by statistics or facts. It doesn't even make sense because illegal immigrants are not trying to vote and risk being arrested and deported. The argument is really nonsensical.

Your obviously against having a valid ID to vote no matter how you spin it. I am not. Again, I don't see the downside. Why would you say non-citizens or undocumented are not voting? If true then this discussion is void, right? To say i don't want poor, etc to vote is a typical Demo response. Nothing is further from the truth. I want LEGAL residents of the USA to vote. PERIOD! No gray area. I simply want them to have a valid ID to do so. The excuses to not prove you are indeed a "LEGAL" citizen should be a given! You really trying to tell me the "dems" give a shit about Puerto Rico? Cmon man! They want the blue territory for votes and you know that. Should Guam become a state? Now there's a head scratcher?

I don't think the people or Guam are necessarily bleeding heart liberals. One of best friends is Chamorro. They tend to be conservative catholics. As far as voter IDs, well, first let me say I agree in theory. And as a black man, I am made somewhat uncomfortable by the notion that voter IDs suppress the minority vote. It's like saying, "Minorities don't have any other reason to have IDs. They don't have jobs, they don't register cars. So if you ask for ID you are targeting these groups because they don't have the means nor reason to obtain ID." And that's bullshit. With that said, make no mistake about it, voter ID laws are every bit about vote suppression and not one iota about protecting the sanctity, and the legitimacy, of the vote. I hate what this means because what the GOP is saying by proposing such laws, and what the Democrats are agreeing with by fighting such laws, is the above statement. It's not about the financial burden of getting IDs or even the access, DMVs are the one thing that are a bother for people of all socio-economic backgrounds. No, it's both parties agreeing that minorities don't have IDs. As far as illegals voting, well, i've been saying this for over four years now. Illegals don't give a damn about elections. They are so worried about drawing attention that they don't even report crimes perpetrated against them. They avoid their own children's schools, parent teacher conferences and such. And up until Obama, they tend to be vert conservative leaning. And very patriarchal. This is why the notion that they were sticking their necks out to vote for Hillary Clinton always made me laugh. The guy who came up with that conspiracy clearly has only spoken to hispanics in Mexican restaurants. I digress...
The real voter suppression tactic the GOP plans to lean on in the future, and has already started to in places like Harris County, Texas, is access to polling places, or lack thereof. The fact is there are frankly more liberals in the country than there are conservatives. And that gap will become a chasm in the next 20 years, which will hopefully splinter the two party system. The GOP, though seeing record numbers in groups like women and African-Americans, are quite clear on the fact that things like voter IDs, limited access to polling places, and the gerrymandering will be the only way to keep up.

Simple reason. Because no numbers, studies, or data indicate or show that non-citizens or undocumented citizens are voting in U.S. elections. Where is your data that shows they are? This is a simply a falsehood pushed by the right.
Who says that Legal Citizens (Not residents, you can be a resident and not a citizen) are not voting? Having an ID has nothing to do with the legality of voting in a federal election. You are missing the point. Valid ID is not a a requirement to legally vote according to the Constitution, CITIZENSHIP is, whether you have an ID or not. When you register to vote, citizenship is checked and validated. It has nothing to do with an id with a photo on it.
The downside is that requiring ID is pointless. Licenses and government issued ID's do not prove citizenship, or show social security numbers. So why is this necessary in your eyes? You think millions of people are using other people's identities to vote? Why and how? Data to back this up? I doubt it, otherwise I am certain you would be willing to provide it for us.
I am not against having a valid ID to vote. It doesn't impact me or my family whatsoever. We all have IDs. Ironically, my wife is Canadian, and has an ID, but can't vote because she is a Not citizen, and does not have the right to yet. Yes, the state checks, and she would not risk being thrown out of the country. See an ID has nothing to do with anything.
In your opinion, who is voting in elections that do not already have an ID? Why do you assume that millions of citizens are voting without possession of valid IDs? Who is telling you this? You have numbers to back this up?

What state do you live in? So your state has voter ID laws? What exactly are you complaining about then??
When you go and present your ID in line to vote are you seeing a bunch of other citizens that refuse to present ID to vote and are still able to cast their votes?? Doubt it.
So what is your issue? You are concerned about a bunch of other states you don't live in not having Voter ID laws?
Interesting take.

When I was young, in both California and Nevada, you could take an older sibling or friends info in and walk out with a real ID. In Nevada you would walk out the same day with a physical ID and you didn't even need to have an address. A PO box would do. You would have to drive to Carson City (I would be in South Lake Tahoe). So I had a Cali and Nevada real "fake" ID. In Cali you needed the birth certificate of the person but in Nevada you literally only needed the info. I'm not even 40 so it's not like this was decades ago. This was in the 90s, which I guess was decades ago but not a ton of them.

This. This Voter ID nonsense is much to do about nothing.
In AZ voters must register to vote via the Arizona DMV. Guess what you have to enter when you register to vote in this state? Proof of identification (License or government issued ID card). This means all registered voters possess legal IDs. There are not waves of citizens without IDs voting in this state, because we are required to enter our license/id numbers into the system to vote to ensure they match our identity.
Voting in the elections is secure and safe.
This voter ID requirement argument is simply a nonsensical one used to delegitimize the 2020 election. It does not match up with reality.
