Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was to have his left foot examined Tuesday by Dr. Scott Morrison, an equine hoof specialist from Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky.
But Barbaro's co-owner, Gretchen Jackson, is still keeping mum about the Dynaformer colt's future plans as rumors swirl that he could soon be discharged from the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center clinic.
Jackson confirmed Monday that Barbaro's chief surgeon, Dr. Dean Richardson, has arranged for Morrison to examine the colt's left hind foot in Pennsylvania. That is the foot that developed severe laminitis in July, requiring Richardson to remove an estimated 80 percent of the hoof. The hoof is regrowing, Jackson said, and though it will not look normal, the colt has been able to use it.
Barbaro has been in intensive care at the New Bolton Center's large-animal hospital since Mayo20, when he shattered his lower right hind leg during the Preakness Stakes. He underwent surgery to repair multiple fractures on May 21, subsequently developing the laminitis in the opposite hind leg as a complication.
"Everything seems to be moving along," Jackson said. "It's slow, but at least it's moving in the right direction.
"I guess Dean feels Dr. Morrison is very good in his field as far as specializing in laminitis and hoof problems, and being a blacksmith as well as a veterinarian," Jackson added. "I guess it's to see if there is something different that should be done."
Richardson prompted speculation that Barbaro's release from the New Bolton Center could be imminent when he said on Dec. 13, "In my mind's eye, he can leave in the not-so-distant future."
Richardson did not elaborate and declined to give a timeline for the horse's departure when he made the comment at a press conference.
Jackson said that she and her husband, Roy, who bred and own Barbaro together, have been making plans for the day Barbaro leaves New Bolton Center. But she declined to say where they would send the colt after his release.
"As soon as it is possible to say anything, we will be happy to say," Jackson said.
For now, she said, "I'm very optimistic that he's going to be okay. By that I mean in no pain and able to live a decent life."
At least everything is looking good for Barbaro, but what about me??

LANGHORNE, PA – Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc. (PWLS), the largest national youth football and heerleading organization in the United States, and the Arena Football League (AFL) have announced today at the Pop Warner 50th Super Bowl a strategic partnership that extends throughout both the AFL and its developmental league, af2.
The creation of the partnership grants the AFL designation as an “Official Partner of Pop Warner” and Pop Warner designation as an “Official Youth Football Partner of the Arena Football League.” As a result of the partnership, Pop Warner programs will benefit from being involved in AFL youth football initiatives and will help Pop Warner to increase awareness of existing and new Pop Warner programs in AFL and af2 markets. The AFL, in their continued efforts to foster an interest in football, will benefit from Pop Warner’s more than 400,000 participants and will have an active presence in this week’s Pop Warner 50th Super Bowl and National Championship Week which is held annually each December at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex. The AFL joins other Pop Warner partners including the NFL; NFL Players Association; Players, Inc.; Disney Sports; ESPN Magazine and USA Football.
“Football provides a platform for today’s youth to learn countless life lessons," said AFL Commissioner DAVID BAKER. "We cannot be more thrilled to partner with Pop Warner, a group that shares the same ideals as the Arena Football League when it comes to the value of youth sports. We are grateful to be given the opportunity to communicate these invaluable messages.”
The two organizations have been working closely together over the last year culminating with Pop Warner establishing the AFL Team of the Year Award, presented each year at its National Awards and All-American Scholar Banquet in May. The award is given to an AFL team that demonstrates commitment and support of Pop Warner programs in AFL markets. This year’s award went to the Orlando Predators, who worked with Central Florida Pop Warner programs in 2005 and brought Predators’ players, mascot and coaches to the 2005 Pop Warner Super Bowl and National Championship Week to participate in a variety of events, including pre-game pep talks and ceremonial coin-tosses. The Predators also provided game tickets to a number of Pop Warner programs in Central Florida during the 2006 AFL season. The Albany Conquest of af2 has been working with Pop Warner’s Challenger Division, a program that started three years ago in the Albany, NY area for kids and young adults with disabilities, including down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, and blindness.
“The relationship with the AFL allows us to provide greater value and opportunities for our Pop Warner programs in AFL and af2 markets to learn more about the sport of football and be involved in youth programs that enhance our members on -and off-field experiences. It’s great to have a youth partner like the AFL that is so committed to the development and support of today’s young athletes. We look forward to a long and fruitful relationship,” said JON BUTLER, Executive Director, Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc.
About Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc.:
Founded in 1929 and headquartered in Langhorne, PA. Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc. is the largest national youth football and cheerleading organization in the United States and the only youth sports organization that emphasizes academics as an equivalent to athletics. Hamilton, Ontario - The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced today that Charlie Taaffe has been named the team's new head coach. Taaffe is the 19th head coach in Ticats history.
"Charlie has been our first choice since we began the search for our next head coach," said general manager Marcel Desjardins. "He has proven himself at every level he has coached at and his track record in the Canadian Football League speaks for itself. I'm very excited to work alongside Charlie as we prepare for next season."
Taaffe brings a wealth of CFL experience to Hamilton after previously spending four seasons with the Montreal Alouettes from 1997-2000.
In his two seasons as head coach, Taaffe posted a 24-12 regular season record and led Montreal to the 2000 Grey Cup final. Taaffe captured the Annus Stukus Trophy as CFL Coach of the Year in both years (1999-2000) he served as head coach.
"I'm excited to return to the CFL," said Taaffe. "I am grateful for the opportunity presented to me by the Ticats organization. Preparation for the 2007 season begins immediately and I look forward to the challenge that lies ahead."
Taaffe joins the Ticats after spending the past six seasons coaching in the NCAA. Most recently, Taaffe served as an offensive consultant with the University of Pittsburgh. Before his stint in Pittsburgh, Taaffe was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Maryland for four seasons (2001-2005).
While at the helm of the Terrapins' offence, Taaffe orchestrated an attack that twice set school records for most points in a season (390 in 2001 and 451 in 2002) and finished the 2003 season ranked in the top 30 nationally in four offensive categories (rushing (24th), total offense (28th), scoring (27th) and pass efficiency (26th).
He can't be much worse, can he? ||an_wink.gif' border=0>

Former England coach Sir Clive Woodward is "unconvinced" by Rob Andrew's ability to lead the national side out of the doldrums.
Woodward has launched a scathing attack on the hierarchy running the English game and has also called for Rugby Football Union chief executive Francis Baron to step aside in favour of an experienced former player.
Andrew, the RFU's elite rugby director, has been charged with identifying a replacement for Andy Robinson, who was sacked as head coach after a disastrous run of 13 defeats in 22 Tests since taking over from Woodward in 2004.
The former fly-half will have a key role to play in attempts to get England back to the summit of world rugby, but Woodward believes his presence may hinder, rather than help the national side.
"I have heard so much drivel spoken about what needs to be done to improve the preparation for this England team and remain unconvinced by Andrew's vision, based on his lack of experience as an international coach," he told The Sunday Times.
"Interfering with the England team and selection makes the role of elite rugby director untenable.
"What is needed is for the England head coach, alone, to be given complete control over every member of the England squad.
"England's head coach must be a man of massive stature to do an all-encompassing job.
"But which coach worth his salt, unless he was desperate for work, would take the England post at present with Andrew hovering, having a say in what is in effect a selection committee and with no control of the players?"
Woodward believes former South Africa coach Nick Mallett is the best man to lead England, but he is not confident the RFU will make the right choice.
"Only one thing is for certain - it will be yet another fudge - again, so much nonsense is spoken," he said.
Winning the World Cup in Australia three years ago was "the worst thing that ever happened to the England team" according to Woodward, due to the fact it glossed over the failings of the English system.
And the 50-year-old claims it is time Baron stepped aside to aid a restructuring of the game which would give the national side priority.

Intrigue will be the order of the day at Sha Tin on Sunday as the superb mares Ouija Board and Pride bid farewell to the races while bidding for the filly and mare world championship, albeit in separate events. Also, Takeover Target faces an early-morning urine test to see if he can maintain his place as the favorite for the Hong Kong Sprint.
Meanwhile, Rebel Rebel will be the lone American starter among 50 horses entered in the four Hong Kong International Races worth a total of $8 million. An Irish-bred 4-year-old trained by Richard Dutrow Jr., Rebel Rebel goes in the $2omillion Hong Kong Mile.
Ouija Board was deemed in "great shape" by her trainer, Ed Dunlop, on Friday morning after cantering in preparation of a defense of her 1 1/2-mile Hong Kong Vase title, while seeking the eighth Group or Grade 1 victory of her storied career. A two-time winner of the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf, Ouija Board is coming off an only slightly disappointing third behind Deep Impact in the Japan Cup, a race in which she had finished fifth last year before notching the $1.8omillion Vase. Frankie Dettori has the call.
Ouija Board, Lord Derby's Cape Cross 5-year-old, faces another strong Japanese challenge in the three-turn, 1o1/2-mile contest. Perhaps most dangerous is Japanese St. Leger winner Song of Wind. This El Condor Pasa colt beat Japan Cup runner-up Dream Passport by 1 3/4 lengths in the Leger, and Dream Passport was half a length in front of Ouija Board in the Japan Cup. Also in the field are Japanese St. Leger third-place finisher Admire Main, Canadian International winner Collier Hill, last year's Grand Prix de Paris and St. Leger winner Scorpion, and Irish St. Leger winner Kastoria.
Pride is also in for a tough race, in the $2.5 million, 1 1/4-mile Hong Kong Cup. Trained by Alain de Royer-Dupre, Pride, 6, followed her second behind Rail Link in the Arc de Triomphe with a career-best effort in the 1 1/4-mile Champion Stakes at Newmarket on Oct. 14. Second by a nose in the Cup last year to Vengeance of Rain, she looks ready for a big effort.
Vengeance of Rain has won four Group 1 races at Sha Tin but has run 10th and fifth in lesser events going shorter this fall. He worked sharply, however, on Tuesday and will appreciate the return to 1 1/2 miles. The Jim Bolger-trained Alexander Goldrun won the Cup two years ago but was an unlucky eighth last year. A repeat of her nose second to Ouija Board in the Nassau Stakes on Aug. 5 would put her in the picture.
Owner-trainer Joe Janiak has revealed that he administered the steroid oestrogen to Takeover Target as a travel aid between Tokyo and Hong Kong seven weeks ago. That will cost him a chance in the $1.5 million Hong Kong Sprint - and more - if the traces of that drug, which turned up in two separate urine samples this week, haven't cleared by Sunday morning. Takeover Target will earn a $1 million Global Sprint Challenge bonus if he wins the six-furlong Sprint on top of his victories in the Lightning and Sprinters stakes. Jay Ford will ride Takeover Target, if he runs, breaking from post 12, which produces the highest percentage of winners over Sha Tin's right-handed, one-turn six-furlong course.
Silent Witness twice won the Sprint at its former distance over a straight five furlongs but is not what he used to be. If Takeover Target is scratched, the selection is British invader Benbaun. Frequently a runner-up in Europe, Benbaun, 5, would rate a slight edge over Sprinters Stakes runner-up Meisho Bowler.
Rebel Rebel's lone victory this year came in the Grade 3 Poker Stakes at Belmont, a weak credential in the face of 13 rivals in the Hong Kong Mile. CashCall Mile winner Dance in the Mood, a Grade 1 winner in Japan going a mile this year, is taken to hold off recent International Mile Trial winner Armada, sharp Italian invader Ramonti, and Yasuda Kinen winner Bullish Luck in the race.
Can you dig it! ||an_tongueout.gif' border=0>

PORTLAND, Ore. - Five stakes will be run on Sunday's 15th Oregon Championship Day program, which is devoted entirely to Oregon-breds.
The $48,000 Os West Oregon Futurity at a mile tops the stakes menu, and Ex Mountain Cop is the one to beat.
Ex Mountain Cop, a 2-year-old son of Ex Marks the Cop who is trained by Jonathan Nance, has been nothing shy of sensational in three stakes starts at the meeting, winning off by big margins in fast times in each race. Ex Mountain Cop began the win streak with an easy score in the six-furlong OTBA Sales Stakes, and he is eligible to tack on a bonus of $30,000 by adding the futurity to his list of wins. Though he will be meeting five rivals at a new and longer distance, Ex Mountain Cop, under regular rider Juan Gutierrez, is expected to go off as one of the shortest-priced favorites of the meeting.
Heavy favorites should be the rule in at least two of the other Oregon-bred stakes.
Silver Patrona stands out in the $10,000-added Jane Driggers Debutante Stakes for 2-year-old fillies, which will go with five runners. Silver Patrona, a daughter of Tiffany Ice from the barn of trainer Jim Fergason, has won all three of her starts at the meeting, including two stakes, by a combined margin of 12 lengths. The speedy Silver Patrona, who will be ridden by Joe Crispin, has previously defeated most of her rivals in Sunday's race.
Lethal Grande also should be a short price, meeting four challengers in the $10,000-added Oregon Sprint Championship. Lethal Grande, a 7-year-old trained by Tom Longstaff, has 20 career victories and $346,470 to his credit, and he is coming off a 4 1/4-length victory in a one-mile invitational handicap here on Nov.o20.
Lethal Grande does face two capable adversaries in My Friend Dave, who was named horse of the meeting at Prairie Meadows two seasons ago, and Raggidy Rowe, a sprint stakes winner at Assiniboia Downs in Canada last summer. Javier Ortega will ride Lethal Grande.
The $10,000-added Oregon Hers Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at a mile and the $10,000-added Oregon His Stakes for 3-year-old colts and geldings at 1 1/16 miles appear to be competitive races.
Fettles Kan might go off as a slight favorite against eight rivals in the Hers, while Brave Hearted and Tom Two figure to vie for favoritism in the His, which has a field of nine.
That is a great F'N name! ||an_clap.gif' border=0>

NEW YORK – New Orleans, a city renowned for sports championships, will host its first team championship since the devastation of Hurricane Katrina when ArenaBowl XXI is played at New Orleans Arena on Sunday, July 29, 2007 at 2 p.m. CT.
“I’m proud of Mr. Benson and his staff that they are returning the VooDoo to New Orleans,” said Commissioner DAVID BAKER. “Immediately after Katrina, the AFL Board of Directors voted to bring an ArenaBowl to New Orleans as soon as it was logistically and economically viable. That time is now. It is our hope that ArenaBowl XXI can, in its own small way, encourage other organizations, events and conventions to consider returning to New Orleans as soon as possible.”
The AFL’s 2007 season kicks off the weekend of March 1-4. Nineteen teams will compete for the right to play in ArenaBowl XXI, including the VooDoo, who return to the field after suspending operations in 2006 due to Katrina.
“This announcement is about commitment, and we have witnessed the commitment of the great football fans in our region this past year. We are thrilled to once again bring back football year round to New Orleans with the Saints and the VooDoo. And to finish it off with the Arena Bowl here in our city, highlighting our region in July to an audience of millions is another milestone in the economic recovery of our community. Now, we need to get to work and make sure the VooDoo are hosting that game,” said VooDoo owner TOM BENSON.
VooDoo season-ticket holders will have the opportunity to purchase ArenaBowl XXI tickets before they go on sale to the general public. AFL fans throughout the country can immediately go to www.arenabowl.com to register on a priority list for tickets and to reserve rooms at the Sheraton New Orleans, which will serve as the Official Headquarter Hotel of ArenaBowl XXI.
New Orleans is synonymous with championships. It has hosted nine Super Bowls, four Final Fours and 71 Sugar Bowls.
“Being awarded ArenaBowl XXI for 2007 is another huge testimony toward the remarkable recovery of our hospitality industry,” said JAY CICERO, President of the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation. “New Orleans has a stellar history of hosting major sporting events, and the continued investment of marquee events, such as the ArenaBowl, in our city is vital toward continuing that tradition. The GNOSF sees the ArenaBowl as much more than a valuable rebuilding step. We also see it as yet another important milestone toward living up to our reputation as a favorite destination for sporting events.”
ArenaBowl weekend will be filled with interactive player and celebrity events, the annual ArenaBall Awards Show, a player combine, concerts, fan festivals and more. Significant community relations efforts will also be apart of the events leading up to the game. ArenaBowl XXI will mark the AFL’s third consecutive neutral-site championship game. The previous two were both played in Las Vegas.
Congrats NO's, great to hear! ||peace.gif' border=0>
