Nice writeups Skubi. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. However, I have to take exception with the Blues needs.
They need size and muscle on defense and the wings since the game has reverted back to a big mans game where space is at a premium. They have two defensemen in Petro and Shatty that can move the puck, but they lack size and strength on the back end save for Polak. They were absolutely steamrolled by LA's size and aggression. The Blues also forecheck more aggressively than most give them credit for. They don't sit back in the neutral zone before they attack. They lack a playmaking center and a true finisher.
Since it is unlikely they will land a true first line talent type forward (their biggest need), they need to get bigger on the wing. Their top 6 wingers are Oshie, McDonald, Steen, Perron, Stewart, and presumably Tarasenko. Stewart is the only one in that group that has good size, but he refuses to use it on a consistent basis. Oshie and Steen won't get pushed around, but neither have enough size and strength to overcome large d-men in the corners or in front of the cage. Oshie can knock anybody on their ass, but he isn't big enough to stand in front of the net and gobble up the scoring opportunities. McDonald and Perron aren't physical at all and are both one hit to the melon of being done for good.
Tarasenko isn't very tall, but is supposedly very stout, hence his nickname (The Tank). D'Agostini is another smallish winger that would take Tarasenko's spot in the top 9 if the young Russian lad isn't ready.
I understand that David Backes is one of the best two way centers in the game, but IMO he should be put back on the wing for good. He style of play is more suited along the wall (think Dustin Brown). The guy is very strong, but has horrible passing skills so he should be the teams 1st line RW instead of top centerman. Andy McDonald won a Cup as the Ducks #1A center, but he plays the wing here in STL??? Coupled with his concussion history, it makes no sense to play him along the wall. Mac and Perron are the Blues two best playmaking forwards.
Having said all that, I expect GM Doug Armstrong to move at least one of his younger forwards (Oshie, Perron, Berglund, or Stewart?) for defensive help since it unlikely the Blues will be in the Ryan Suter sweepstakes at the very end even though he and Petro paired together would be heavenly. Schwartz and The Tank have top 6 forward ability so something has to give. The NHL is no different than any other sport (copycat), so expect some bigger trades this summer like LA pulled off last year. The only two Eliot Ness players on STL are Pietrangelo and Backes.
GM Armstrong has made this unusual bold statement. "We're going to be active (in free agency) & we are going to see how we can improve our team. I’ll just leave it at that.”
Keep in mind the Blues have a new owner, but his pockets aren't very deep so my enthusiasm is tempered.
The Blues will be under a lot of pressure for a lot of different reasons in 12-13 and will probably be the favorites to win the Central even if Detroit lands Suter and another impact player. They have the assets to trade if they are willing to make the gamble on a culture change...... I don't have the time or energy to go thru your other opinions, but thanks again for sharing them.

I think this years UFA class is very weak save for Suter and Parise. Perhaps I scoured the list too quickly.
There are a lot of serviceable d-men available, but I can't think of any other true impact players besides Suter or Parise. I suppose some team will take a look at Semin...

I don't think the hockey will be nearly as boring as you think fever. To say these 4 teams stay back and play the trap is not entirely correct.
St. Louis does not stay back in the neutral zone and play a trap. They send a forechecker in to attack the puck carrier while the two forwards skate back towards their own zone in the middle of the ice if a turnover is not likely in the offensive zone. That has always been Hitchcock's trademark. Jere Lehtinen was a master at that in Dallas. He would constantly pick off passes because his positioning in the passing lanes was perfect.
I think most would be surprised to learn that Nashville and Phoenix were both in the bottom third as far as shots against in the regular season. The Preds were 20th, the Yotes were 28th!
Phoenix has allowed an average of 40.2 SOG in these playoffs. Yes 5 of their 6 games went to OT, but they still allowed an average of 35.8 SOG in regulation.
In fact the other three teams left in the West have allowed more SOG in the playoffs than they did in the regular season. LA allowed an average of 7 more SOG per game in the first round than they did in the regular season!
The fact is that you have 4 goalies that are playing outstanding right now. Granted there are not many skilled forwards left in the West now, but the 4 teams with the most skilled forwards were all rather easily discarded in the first round by the 4 teams left. Three of the teams (Chi, Det, and Van) had plenty of scoring opportunities, but could not solve the very hot opposing goalie. That means the SOG will probably be down from the first round since the skill level will be down, but I think the games will still be fun to watch.
The most skilled forwards left in no particular order are Kopitar, Mc Donald, Carter, Radulov, Vrbata, Whitney, Perron, & Erat. Definitely several steps down from the likes of the Sedins, Toews, Kane, Hossa, Sharp, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Thornton, & Couture.
However take a look at all of the good young defensemen left:
Pietrangelo, Shattenkirk, Doughty, Voynov, Weber, Suter, Josi, Yandle, and Ekman-Larsson. All of these guys are very young except the two studs in Nashville and Yandle. Those three guys are only 26-27 years old.

B.Elliott 1.37 GAA .949 save%
J. Quick 1.59 GAA .953 save%
M. Smith 1.81 GAA .950 save%
P. Rinne 1.81 GAA .944 save%

The Preds had a great PP during the regular season, but struggled against the Wings in the first round. The Yotes were the opposite. Horrible PP in the regular season, but excellent in the first round. Nashville's price is a little lower than most were expecting, but you have to remember that the Yotes have home ice even though that has proved useless this year coupled with the fact that the road team won all 4 games this year in this matchup. Phoenix has a very underrated group of defensemen. Nice mix of size, skill, youth, and veterans. Nashville will give them a much better test in all three zones than the Hawks did. STL only scored 3 goals in 4 games vs Quick this year. The teams seem very even right now to me. Tough call. I think most will be on the Kings at plus dough. Hitchcock is definitely a better coach than Sutter, but Quick could make that a moot point.

Researching the Preds and the Yotes proved interesting. The road team won all 4 games this year. Mike Smith played in only one game and lost 5-4 in a SO. Somehow LaBarbera won both games in Nashville this year. Rinne played all 4 games for the Preds and surprisingly had a 2.71 GAA and "only" a .919 save%. He did however shutout the Yotes once.
In the other series Quick allowed only 3 goals in 4 games going 3-1. He won and lost a 1-0 game. Elliott only started 1 game vs the Kings and lost in a shootout 1-0. The first game between these two teams was the Blues worst loss of the year as they lost 5-0 in LA, but that was with Davis Payne as coach. The Kings won a game in STL 3-2 this year where Barrett Jackman made two glaring turnovers you would normally see an 8 year old make. Expect totals of 4.5 by the 3rd game.

Not surprising at all. The simple explanation is that the 4 best goalies in the West remain. The 4 big name teams (Det, Van, SJ, & Chicago) that even the casual East coast fans are familiar with are cleaning their golf clubs. Chicago had no shot this year with their loose defense and poor goaltending.
The 4 remaining teams ranked 1st, 2nd, 5th, & 8th in goals against in the regular season. The two best defensive teams last year played in the finals. This year they meet in the 2nd round.
Nashville finished 8th in GA, but they also score more than the other teams left. They also finished 8th in goals scored mainly due to their top ranked PP unit. The other teams finished 18th, 21st, and 29th.
There are also some really good defensmen left in the West that will start to get some more recognition. Obviously Weber and Suter are well known and Doughty had his nuts rubbed a couple of years ago, but guys like Pietrangelo, Ekman-Larsson, & Yandle will now be in the spotlight. Other young guys like Shattenkirk, Voynov, and Josi will get their first taste of the bright lights.
How would you guys rank the remaining goalies and coaches?
As much as a great story Elliott has been this year I would think he is sucking hind tit to Rinne, Quick, & Smith. Can't argue if any of those three guys were ranked #1 right now. I can't remember a year where you had 4 very hot goalies left in the Conference semi-finals like we have this year.
Have to give the edge to Hitchcock as far as the coaches go. Trotz has always done a nice job. Tippett has proved in his career and especially the last three years that he is an outstanding coach. That leaves Sutter to definitely bring up the rear.
Definitely not a lot of top flight skilled forwards on these teams. It is hard to crack the lineup on these teams unless you are willing to play balls to the wall all of the time. Not many floaters on the rosters.

If NY, NJ, and Boston go down, the remaining goalies in the East will be Theodore, Bryzgalov, Anderson, and Holtby! WOW! |

Congrats to my buddies that are Flyers fans. I mentioned before this series started that I would be shocked to see the Flyers (without Pronger) beat the Pens. That tells you what I know. I'm surprised Fleury was as bad as he performed. The Flyers are without question the most entertaining team in the NHL to watch. Good luck the rest of the way boys............... |

Thanks HeH22
Thanks wiggins. Elliott might be the best individual story this year. He was signed in the summer to compete against Bishop for the backup goalie and look at what has happened. I hope his dream season continues.....
Thanks LRR: I listed my concerns about this team and they still stand regardless of opponent. I was tired of reading about their supposed lack of experience and that being the reason they will lose in the playoffs. If you re-read my posts, it was hardly an endorsement of San Jose. I took the Sharks simply because of the inflated price I got from my local since everyone else in town was on the home team. I have always been a big doubter in the Sharks and nothing has changed.
I'll gladly drop some more cash on the Blues 2nd round opponent and hope I lose again. Yes, on the sideways lock curse.
In all seriousness, the Blues got the weak goaltender in the first round, but will get Quick, Smith, or Rinne in the 2nd round. I mistakenly mentioned a few posts above that the Blues could still play all of the other teams left except Vancouver. There is no chance for the Blues to play Chicago in the 2nd round. There is still a chance the top 4 seeds advance in the West. That means STL would draw Phoenix. They'll get the Kings if they eliminate the Nucks. They'll get Nashville if Vancouver and Chicago advance.

Thanks CE, but the climb is still long and uphill. I still have my concerns that I stated in the OP. BTW the veterans led by example and on the score sheet. Langenbrunner scored the tying goal last night. McDonald dominated the series offensively and Arnott pitched in on the PP in San Jose.
I repeat that the Blues will not lose in the playoffs this year because lack of experience like many have stated. I read a poster claim in another thread that the Blues were the biggest flake in the playoffs. Huh? They were one of the most consistent teams all year. That is flaky?

I went to game 5 last night. Great atmosphere in the beginning and of course at the end! After the Perron goal, the roof was ready to blow. It has been a long time coming for the Blue Note. The Blues did the things necessary (post #2 in this thread) to beat the Sharks:
*Elliott outplayed Niemi
*Blues scored many PP goals & won the special teams battle
*Limit the secondary scoring from the Sharks
From post #28
"I will say the Blues usually chew up opposing teams that aren't disciplined and teams that don't play hard all of the time. The Sharks are the definition of that team."
I thought the Sharks forwards should have been more physical in this series, but they seemed to lack the intensity. I have always ripped Thornton and Marleau, but I must say Thornton played hard and well for most of the series and especially last night. On the other hand, Marleau is and always has been a complete waste of physical talent. No points in 9 games this year vs St. Louis and it appears that he was just going thru the motions until too late. They only won game 1 because Halak let in a few softies in that game and that was also the only game Niemi played well.
GM Wilson should have traded Marleau a few years back, but has now waited too long because of salary and age. It has always amazed me why Wilson always gets a free pass and never appears to be in trouble to keep his job. The Sharks simply don't have the consistency, intensity, and goaltending to win 16 games in one playoff year to win it all. Hell, they'll never win 12 games and make the finals with this nucleous.
Pavelski also was shutout, but at least he hustles. Dan Boyle has definitely lost a step as he is nearing the last years of his career. We'll see what Wilson does this summer. Can he get a team to take the lazy and indifferent Marleau off his hands?
The rough stuff that took part in the 3rd period of game 2 seemed to galvanize the Note. Andy McDonald played with a fury that I have never seen before after he took the head shot in game 2. His dominance in SJ was the difference. I must give credit to another guy that I didn't think had it in him and that is Patrik Berglund. He contributed offensively and continues to impress with his defensive game.
That 2nd line of the Blues carried the team while the Backes line was relatively quiet in the offensive end. The d-men held up in this series, but didn't take the physical abuse I thought they would.
Last nights win is big because so the team didn't have to travel all the way back to San Jose again and also gives them some time to heal some injuries. Halak is rumored to be almost ready to practice again, but obviously he won't play in another game unless Elliott gets hurt or has a couple of poor games.
The Blues next opponent can still be any team remaining except the Nucks. If LA beats Vancouver the Blues will play the Kings. You might get some rare 4.5 on the totals if that matchup happens. It probably would not occur until game 3 if the first two games are 2-1, 2-0, or 1-0 finals.

^ LOL. I was glad to lose the C-note. If the Blues ever make it to the finals, I will bet as much as I can afford against them so that I either make a ton of dough or else they finally lift that damn Cup! I know my philosophy is different than most, but I figure I win either way. |

I thought I might catch the Yotes with a + before thier price tonight, but I was wrong, so I passed. Vrbata makes that team go offensively, but how about that little prick Whitney? He has had one of the most underrated careers ever. He might go down as the most anonymous 1000 point guy in league history. |

GL with your other two bets. BTW: Do you realize how lucky you are to be a fan of a team with all of the (young) offensive talent of the Flyers? My team would love to have just one of those guys. Your team should be loaded for years as long as Holmgren doesn't fuck up the salary cap and stays away from those long contracts like he gave Bryzgalov. |
