I concede this is being played at Energy Australia and the last time the Dogs won there was 2005, but this is a Bulldogs squad that has learnt how to win. Hannant is out but replaced by an able Armit and with Roberts and Kimmorley coming together again the Dogs will put some points on and are likely to concentrate on the edge defence and left-hand side of the Knights. The question is, can the Knights counter with enough enterpsie of their own? Doesn't help with Gids and McManus out, but the let down against the Cowboys is sure to have them reved up at home where they will be aiming for 9 in a row.
For me, $1.72 is just far too attractive, what are your thoughts AB, or are you unable to see clearly through that red and blue haze?
Eh hem...
Testing, testing 123
I posted in this thread earlier that I thought they were in a fair bit of trouble this week. Maybe they are.
I almost played the Dogs -2 a few days ago, but something held me back. With time to think, I'm not sure what to make of this one.
The loss of Gidley is clearly more important than McManus. McDonnell comes into the side, who's been playing lights out in the local comp here. The very fact that Newcastle splashed out $100k on McDonnell ONLY TO PLAY when Gidley was unavailable shows how serious the Knights think their chances are this season. As a side that missed the 8 by one win last year, they know the importance of jagging one or two wins during origin. Given that they have Wes in the squad and a couple of real promising junior fullback prospects, the signing of McDonnell speaks plenty.
The Knights and the Dogs are old rivals, 1998 still brings a tear to my eye. You're right they haven't won here since 2005. More importantly, no one has beaten Newcastle here since July last year. Eight straight, equal club record - and I'm told all the talk is of bettering the mark this week.
Dogs have been impressive - their win last week against Melbourne no doubt the most impressive of all. They've proven they can win any style of game. With the little ball they had against St George they had no right being close to them, yet should have won. They have had a soft schedule though, and come into some tough assignments over the next four weeks.
Newcastle will be smarting after last week, and there's nothing like the familiar confines of home. Brian Smith has proven all year (perhaps barring last week) that he has a plan for each team they play - it'll be no different this week.
I have nothng on this game yet, but can't say I won't by Sunday.
Does anyone else wonder why though, if they (the Dogs) are the value bet of the week - everyone's on them - why was the line set at 2?
