Spec this World Cup was very good IMHO - so many exciting matches. In my post #29 above I reference 2006 as being great (Maxi Rodriguez in OT vs Mexico - Whoa!).

Also an average of 7 matches ending in 0-0 tie these past few cups - this cup there was only 1. That means something, even if just a little.

You forgot to mention the yearly Advanced Basket Weaving competition from Norway which is usually a hoot.

friends and I were talkign about this during HT of yesterdays match so figured why not take a trip down memory lane here:

for me, im still partial to 2002. this literally had "everything" (and just for the record.... i got my teeth kicked in, lessons I still carry with me till this very day) and i think any of the guys in here whom have 'been around the block' so to speak, will agree (or at least put it in their Top 3).  this WC was a bookies "heaven" starting with opener:
Biggest upset:
- by far.. it has to be Senegal beating France in 2002.  France, at that time was #1 in the world; and nobody knew anything about the Africans. to me, this is where it started that whole generation influx of talent there to europe which carries on still till this day. if im not mistaken, i think that whole Senegalese team got european contracts right after the WC. you want a "whoaaaaa" to start ur WC with?  there it was.

- a few days later the Germans got the 2-pt conversion. (8-0)
- 7 out of the top 11 in the world were gone before Qtrs even started; France,Gauchos, Portugal, didnt even make it out of Groups & they were all in Top 5.   
- Co-hosts Korea & their 40+ ranking beat: #5, #6, #8, #13 and lost to Germans in the semis on a late goal. hence, the start of "gadzillions".

- and from the KO round onwards was a promotional motherlode; the pairings too: Mex/USA - dont care if it was Concacaf, now that's a RIVALRY on the biggest stage. if memory serves properly there were like 15 yellows in that one and a few reds.  ref should have brought handcuffs.  
- i think just a few of the 16 KO + later games were decided by more than 1 goal. 

but its that Qtr-Final matchup, in my opinion, was the most HYPED-UP WC game I had ever witnessed.... England/Brazil. from a neutral, nothing has come close since/prior. (the h*ll with 2006)
a) two countries with legions of reporters, during a time period when there were NO RULES what can get printed & BOTH truly believing they were rightful owners of the trophy. 
b) Ronaldo vs Beckham.  a journalists "dream".  and the Lions had one of their best teams, having already beaten Argentina in groups. 
c) i remember this was played in Japan too. whom ALREADY had their OWN crazed media, just a few days after Korea knocked out my guys. so they were already drooling at the mouth. 
again.... the HYPE.; whats crazy was the match actually lived up to its billing.

- and in the end, it was the summer where Ronaldo cemented his legendary status (a one-man wrecking ball) 

2002 takes the cake for me. on many fronts. not to mention.... all those rumors of match-fixing, (i just had to squeeze that one in there) led by Mr. Santa Claus himself -- Sepp Blatter. 

(wanted to give a shout to - i think it was Barb - whom posted that video in the countdown thread last month.    thx fer those memories   )

Single game elimination is a double edged sword  - exciting because it all comes down to one game but on the other side with a bad call or just some bad bounces the better team sometimes does not make it through. I like a 1-1 like it used to be! for the knock outs but that will never happen again. It is what it is.

lets be realistic here.  these major Intl tourneys dont always reflect the "worlds best team".  its basically "whom is playing the best at that particular time".   
and as much as people dont like to talk about it... "luck" IS a part of the success.  those shots that bounce off the woodwork instead of in, deflections, and other fortunate occurances. 

replay this 10 times.  or ill even go as far as saying juggling the Groups around,  and im willing to bet the outcome would be different each time. 

France won.  and did it fair & square.  but i stop short at saying theyre the "best team in the world"

For us it was a disaster the way 2 crucial error calls by ref changed the game

Refs will always be refs.
Croatia has nothing to be ashamed of the whole world took note of the quality play that came from your guys. Im more pissed about the fools that rushed the field, messed up the flow of play for the Croats in 2h

I agree with Dueces statement 200%.  your comment perhaps is just ones own personal feelings which are still 'raw' and thats fine. dont get me wrong; believe me, ive been in your shoes before --- its a tough pill to swallow.  but theyre just across the sea here, and I can tell you with accuracy that the party was STILL going on right through the night well into Tuesday out there.  i mean, hey, the refs are always gonna get the blame for something.
if ya ask me, I dont even think many people truly understand just what Croatia accomplished. theres a tremendous amount of PRIDE in Croatia this whole week & nothing to hang your head on.  you kidding me..... 4 million people?   thats a very very small pool of possible athletes to choose from.  without a strong domestic league either. 
how many CITIES in the states have 4+ million people for godsakes?   some countries have Billions and cant even get a sniff of the WC. 

and to make it to the final?...might be a while before we see something like that again.  hey, my hats off to Croatia
