Barb, The best way to heat is to maintain a temp. Like DJ says tho, running pump is not cheap.
Instead of running 12 hours straight, maybe split it up. 4 on, 4 off. At least you won't lose temp as quickly as we lose it here. Maybe solar panels on roof and run pool water thru them?

won't go solar before next year , i need to know how much energy i use in order to chose which panels are right for me
but heating it with solar is the future for sure

my neighbor went fully solar a while ago , his energy bill went to $ 5 from average more than $ 500 / month , he runs his AC nonstop all summer long and heater in the winter

@Whiskey609
If I were to stay in one place forever I would go solar but I don't plan on staying in my house for long enough to make it worth while

There are solar panels that you run your pool water thru. I use a plastic solar strip laid on my deck. Water is tapped out of pool system with a valve to control flow. i just finished my roof, so i'm thinking of putting a solar panel or 2 to heat pool water and then having a company do solar for electricity.
