ATP Basel Preview
The home crowd won’t have Roger Federer to cheer for as the two-time defending champion will miss this year’s event. Federer has won the Swiss Indoors Basel an astounding seven times since 2006. The good news for tournament organizers is that one of the two men not named Federer that have claimed a title here in the last decade will be in the field. Newly crowned Stockholm Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro is expected to participate his week. DelPo won the title in Basel back-to-back in 2012 and 2013. He arrives with form and desire as he has climbed inside the Top 50 with last week’s title.
This year’s field will be led by another Swiss with Stan Wawrinka as the top seed. Wawrinka has had a rough go of it in this tournament though with a 9-12 mark in his career. Wawrinka’s best finishes were making the semifinals in 2006 and 2011. Round out of the top four seeds are Milos Raonic, Kei NIshikori and Marin Cilic. The back half of the top eight seeds is strong with 2014 Basel finalist David Goffin in at the 5th spot followed by Grigor Dimitrov, Richard Gasquet and Jack Sock. Gasquet comes in hot off his title win indoors in Antwerp, while Goffin, Dimitrov and Sock all made the semifinals or better last week in their respective tournaments.
Seeds have been a big part of the business end of this tournament with no non-seeds crashing the final since 2011 when Kei Nishikori made it as a wild card. Non-seeds have done a good job of stealing at least one semifinal slot over the last four years. Each of the last four years, a non-seeded player has made the semifinals with 2013 seeing a pair of non-seeded players in the semis.
There are certainly upsets early on traditionally at this tournament, despite its 500 status. No seeds get byes in Basel, so everyone starts in the opening round. For Stan Wawrinka, that has been especially perilous with the Swiss being dumped out in the first round each of the last four years. At least two seeds have fallen in round one three of the last four years. With that in mind, here is a look at this year’s seeds and what to expect early on.
Seed Report
1. Stan Wawrinka
Basel has been positively poisonous to Wawrinka with first round exits from 2012-2015. He’ll probably owe the organizers a nice Christmas card this year with fellow Swiss Marco Chiudinelli scheduled to face him in round one. Chiudinelli had one remarkable run to the semis in Basel back in 2009, but is 1-6 since then. Wawrinka is rested after his St.Petersburg Finals loss. Unless he’s truly cursed in Basel, this is a very good chance to reverse his recent trend of first round flops in Basel.
