Basically in the final week now of WNBA reg season action, and my subject title has led me to do a season review on what my thoughts from the pre-season write-ups I did. There were a few shockers, a few surprises and just plan up horrible basketball.
Before we start, my Power rankings before the season started were.

The "Surprises"
The Perfect Storm - The biggest addition to any roster to the entire league IMHO is the re-invention of Dan Hughes. For the last few season, Storm fans and players had to put up with Jenny Boucek. Funny that the following season after her dismissal, they are looking to clinch top seed. There is no denying Hughes has brought the best out of this players. They fight hard in 99% of their games and have had to deal with some brutal scheduling yet they are sitting top of the mountain right now. Stewart is having a MVP year as well and Bird is just one of the best guards in the league and then you have Howard which was definitely a top 3 trade this year made by any team. She just adds another big buddy to go along with Stewart and she is scoring as well. Minny could have used her a lot this season if they kept her.
Liz Cambage - IMHO isnt a big surprise to me but I will add her here though. I watched her play in Oz, she is just a beast and cannot be stopped because she is tall and solid, unlike BG. A great addition and another good comeback story as well.
Dream - had them top 4 in my PR's which they are and should be at the end of season. New coach, she has dont a great job. Didn't start too well but she has pulled them together and shown Angel how to play team ball compared to the way Cooper used to run the show. Truly believe that is why she sat out last season, because its a known fact that she didn't get a long with him. Great season so far by them, Hayes having a sensational year but I feel when it comes playoff time, the Angel injury and new coach may not be such a good thing for them moving forward but we shall see.

The "Surprises"

his and almost miss the playoffs. I am sorry but you have above average roster
yet you are still fighting for playoff lives the final week.
The Mercury - oldest team in the league, no depth and does
DT want to cry and b!tch anymore to the refs? She is a good player but she
needs to shut up every now and then and play ball. BG would get outrebounded by
Muggsy Bogues on any given day. Soft as tissues and just doesn't play hard
enough. Lyttle was a big loss but not as big as we all thought. They have
sucked since she left the team with injury. They will be most likely bounced
1st round if not 2nd round because they wouldn't know how to play defense if it killed them.
The Lynx are old and tired - I will never count this team out
at all when it comes to playoff time. Teams will go down to 7-8 player
rotations, and when you consider the Lynx will most likely go with Moore,
Whalen, Augustus, Fowles and Brunson as their starting 5 and then Robinson,
Tanisha Wright off the bench, your not looking to bad. The way the playoffs are
set-up, its not like it a long post-season compared to NBA, so if the Lynx can
some how claw their way into 4th seed, then they will be ok. In saying that
though, the Whalen decision to be coach of a college team wasn't a good one
IMHO and she looks very old and unhealthy right now. They haven't been their
usual self but rumours around the league are stating that this season they may
have had a poor season (to their standards) to obtain decent draft picks
because the team is getting old and Reeve knows she needs some injection of
youth in the following seasons.

Katie Smith & the Liberty - will see be around next season? Who
the h3ll knows. The Liberty might not be around next season. Playing out of
that horrendous Westchester, 150 capacity stadium was a poor choice and the
Liberty have been pure horrendous this season. This roster needs an overhaul for
next season if they want to be competitive again. No words can explain them,
they haven't hit 10 wins yet and most likely wont.
"And the others"
Sparks - always doing Sparks things, had a small letdown this season but
still in there with a great chance. Nneka and Beard missing several games has
dropped them down the standings but they will be
Sun - well that mid-season fight didn't do them any good either, Miller
took awhile to find out how to use both Chiney and Jones as Chiney returned
from her long injury. Once again, believe they will be in the top 4 come season
end as well.
Sky - pretty much the same as last season, barely holding onto playoff
survival, need to win every game going forward to have any chance. They will be
better next year no doubt with their rookies getting good experience this
season.
Mystics - up and down season so far, sitting nicely in 3rd
spot but I think they might drop down to 4th and possible 5th. Either way, I
don't see this team making the WNBA Finals as long as Toliver is running the
guards. We have all seen it from her, one game she will come out and land 7
threes and then next 3-4 games, disappear and scored 5 points. EDD and Cloud
are great together but like I said at the start of the season, their biggest
loss was Meesseman. Atkins is a great rookie and would be close to ROY if it
wasn't for Aja Wilson but her inexperience come playoff time might be crucial.
Their bench stinks as well.
Aces - Laimbeer has done a decent job so far this season with Aja Wilson
definitely being the ROY. Such a fantastic player to watch and quick for her
size. I love McBride, she has been so loyal to this Stars/Aces and she keeps
delivering. I just want to finally have a squad where her talents are shown and
actually reap the rewards because she deserves it. Hustling every game,
dropping points most nights. The key for Aces next year is to ditch Plum and
let Jefferson run the show.

Liberty playing for pride, Dream trying to keep down 2nd seed. Dream off a B2B which IMHO doesn't mean to much unless they get stuck in transit like the Aces did last week. Two meetings already this season, Vegas had this series total opening at 150.5 in the first meeting, 2nd meeting was set at 164.5 and went under. Actually, both meetings came close, 151 and 150 points scored in those 2 games. With the Liberty playing for pride, dont expect too much defense from them and I expect the Dream to play quick tempo and push the pace in this game.

Liberty playing for pride, Dream trying to keep down 2nd seed. Dream off a B2B which IMHO doesn't mean to much unless they get stuck in transit like the Aces did last week. Two meetings already this season, Vegas had this series total opening at 150.5 in the first meeting, 2nd meeting was set at 164.5 and went under. Actually, both meetings came close, 151 and 150 points scored in those 2 games. With the Liberty playing for pride, dont expect too much defense from them and I expect the Dream to play quick tempo and push the pace in this game.

Sun need to play some form of defense in this game and cannot play their usual fast tempo game as the other night shown them that the Sky can easily shoot lights out with them. In saying that, I don’t expect Chicago to shoot so well on the road either. This game will have some tension after Miller’s little plan to ruin the Sky’s artempt for league assist record in one game.
If you were playing for pride you wouldn’t play Gary Payton type defense? I love your picks just find that odd.
KP, wasn't able to comment back to you as I was snoozing. I don't believe that some teams can play defense when playing for pride, NY is one of those teams that can't. When I mentioned them playing for pride, I mean offensively which they did 1H, putting up 48 and then coming out in the 2H and where flat like the earth (according to Kyrie Irving).

So interesting news, Mr Williams and Bibb got into an altercation today and I sense it might be the end of William's role as the coach. Bibb said that he reacted the way he did because of the team's recent downward spiral and after the loss today, it was just a boiling point. Lets see what happens especially if the Aces claim 8th spot.

WOW, that's huge news mate. Its what they need though because any team with Cambage, Glory, Skylar and the rest should not be battling it out for 8th seed. He has done nothing for so many years that bloke and needs to go.
