Virgin Hotels Las Vegas has announced it will be undergoing a transition period, departing from casino management ownership by the Mohegan Tribe.

Mohegan was the first commercial casino in Las Vegas managed by an Indian tribe, however, there has not been an explanation provided for why control of the Virgin Hotels Las Vegas casino is no longer under the operation of the Mohegan Tribe.

“We are grateful for the collaboration with Mohegan, and we will continue to work together to ensure a well-ordered transition of casino operations," said Cliff Atkinson, president at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. "This transition is a natural progression in our journey to provide guests of Virgin Hotels Las Vegas with a seamless resort experience.”

Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, also known as the “Resort,” initially opened in March 2021. It’s a property with more than 1,500 rooms, a 60,000 square foot casino, and a five-acre pool complex that contains a live music and entertainment theater located off the Las Vegas Strip.

Mohegan footprint

Mohegan continues to oversee operations in several countries, which includes eight casino properties. Mohegan Digital, which is the iGaming division within Mohegan, owns the WNBA Connecticut Sun franchise. Their home games are played at an arena attached to the Mohegan Sun casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Other locations Mohegan currently has a foothold in include Atlantic City, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and Ridgefield, Washington. Mohegan Inspire is located in Incheon, South Korea, along with its resort in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.

Mohegan did experience a lull in cash flow at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas casino reported at the end of 2023. It recorded $3.1 million in revenue, which was more than a 400% decrease from casino revenue earned in 2022, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The Mohegan Tribe claimed that the lack of gaming revenue was the primary factor contributing to this result.
