Angels vs White Sox betting preview

Starting pitchers

Jose Suarez (0-1, 5.54 ERA): Suarez has struggled with both stamina and control through three starts this season.

He’s gone exactly 4 1-3 innings in each of his first three appearances, allowing a combined eight earned runs on 11 hits and nine walks. He’s struck out just 11 batters, and has surrendered 29 fly balls compared to only nine ground balls.

Vince Velasquez (0-2, 6.75 ERA): It’s difficult to sugarcoat Velasquez’s first three outings of the 2022 campaign.

The California native has failed to last five innings in each of his starts this season while authoring a 1.83 WHIP. Right-handed batters are 11-for-22 off Velasquez this year with three homers and six RBI.

Angels vs White Sox picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

The Angels’ superior lineup and bullpen should propel them to their seventh straight victory on Saturday.

L.A. is currently second in the majors in runs per game (5.01), and is set to take on White Sox depth piece Vince Velasquez in this one. Velasquez has been knocked around early in each of his last two starts, which bodes well for an Angels offense that’s fourth in runs per first five innings (3.10). Once Velasquez is removed, Chicago’s bullpen, ranked 25th by ERA (5.54) over the last week, will take over.

The usual suspects in Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout have been driving the Halos’ offense, as the pair has combined to bat 19-for-51 (.372) over the last seven days with four homers and nine RBI.

It’s a dubious proposition that Jose Suarez will last long enough to record his first win of 2022, but the Angels hurler has one advantage on his side: The White Sox are dead-last in baseball in walks drawn (39), suggesting that Suarez doesn’t need to conquer his control issues in order to be effective in this outing.

Backing Suarez is an L.A. bullpen that’s seventh in baseball by ERA (2.33) over the last seven days. Raisel Iglesias has converted all five save chances to date, while middle relievers Oliver Ortega, Ryan Tepera, and Aaron Loup have combined for a 1.42 ERA on the season.

Trend bettors should note that the Halos are 8-2 in their last 10 games as a road underdog.

Prediction: Angels moneyline (+111 at WynnBET)

Over/Under analysis

Despite a gloomy forecast, the pitching staffs in question should still have a hard time preventing runs.

Suarez sports a very low 2.0 strikeout/walk ratio over his career, and Velasquez’s figure since 2021 isn’t much higher at 2.03. Both hurlers are also allowing double the amount of fly balls compared to ground balls, and when these two factors are combined, it hardly matters what the weather is like at first pitch. The bullpens will likely have little margin for error for Under bettors.

It hasn’t just been the Trout and Ohtani show for L.A., as bench bat Taylor Ward has suddenly become a force at the dish in 2022. He has 11 hits in his last 24 at-bats (.458), with an astonishing four homers and 12 RBI.

Some of Chicago’s hitters are beginning to show signs of life; Tim Anderson had his seventh multi-hit game of the year on Friday, Yasmani Grandal has a hit in five of his last six games, and Jake Burger is fresh off a dominant series against the Royals in which he went 6-for-12 with two extra-base hits.

The Over is 7-2-1 in the Angels’ last 10 road games, and 4-1 in the White Sox’s last five games after scoring two runs or fewer in their previous tilt.

Prediction: Over 9.0 (-104 at FanDuel)

Best bet

L.A. leads the majors in OPS (.776), is second in stolen bases (16), fourth in homers (27), and fifth in walks (76). In short, this is an offense that can manufacture runs in any manner necessary.

The White Sox relief corps is sorely missing Liam Hendriks (back), as Aaron Bummer, Kyle Crick, and Reynaldo Lopez have combined for five straight appearances with at least one earned run allowed. This unit will be scrambling to provide zeroes on the scoreboard behind the troubled Velasquez.

Trout projects to be the difference-maker for the Angels – though he’s never faced Velasquez, he’s a combined 17-for-41 (.415) with four longballs against ChiSox relievers Kendall Graveman and Lopez.

Consider the former AL MVP in all prop markets, but make sure the Angels’ team total is atop your tickets.

Pick: Angels team total Over 4.0 (-118 at FanDuel)
