Starting pitchers
Alek Manoah (1-0, 3.14 ERA): The 23-year-old rookie will be making his fourth career start for Monday's series finale. Manoah has thrown well in three starts overall, with one rough outing sandwiched between an impressive MLB debut and his last start against the Chicago White Sox. The 6-foot-6 right-hander went five innings in a difficult road assignment versus the first-place White Sox, allowing four hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out four over a career-high 90 pitches.
Nathan Eovaldi (7-3, 4.11 ERA): The hard-throwing righty is having a strong season, at least one that's certainly better than his 4.11 ERA indicates. Eovaldi has an impressive 2.63 FIP thanks to great control and a minuscule home run rate. While he has allowed homers in three of his last four starts, he went his first nine outings without allowing one. Eovaldi will look to bounce back after a rough start against the hard-hitting Houston Astros, who put up five runs on 11 hits against him over 5 2-3 innings.

Moneyline pick
Boston is coming off its worst loss of the season, as the Blue Jays treated Martin Perez and Ryan Weber like batting practice pitchers Sunday, pounding the pair for 16 runs on 19 hits (seven of which left the yard) over seven innings. Rowdy Tellez added Toronto's eighth bomb of the day in the ninth inning, inflicting the final wound in a bloodbath that the Red Sox would rather forget.
Toronto's powerful offense was on full display, with the heavy hitters doing most of the damage. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his MLB-leading 21st long ball, Teoscar Hernandez clubbed two, and Bo Bichette and Marcus Semien were among other Blue Jays who got in on the home run barrage. This is not a fun lineup to face if you're an opposing pitcher and it's only going to get more lethal once All-Star George Springer returns.
Here's why Boston can feel good about Monday's finale, though: Eovaldi and a rested bullpen.
While Eovaldi has an unsustainable home run rate, he's the type of pitcher you want on the mound after getting tattooed by a team that leads MLB in homers. Eovaldi's allowing 0.37 homers per nine innings and has a 4.8% home-run-to-fly-ball rate, both of which are the second-best marks in baseball. He's also not giving away bases, walking only 5.5 percent of the batters he has faced, which places him inside the Top 20 among starting pitchers.
Further, the Red Sox let Weber absorb the damage after Perez was yanked in the second, turning to two position players to close out the shellacking in order to keep their 'pen arms fresh in a game that was quickly a lost cause. They should be able to throw their best at the Blue Jays for the series finale.
Toronto is certainly an enticing road 'dog at +115, but the Red Sox will have their best arm on the mound. Getting to face a rookie who has struggled with control doesn't hurt, either.
PREDICTION: Boston (-120)
Over/Under pick
While Eovaldi has done a fantastic job keeping the ball in the yard, as noted, that doesn't mean he can escape the wrath of the Blue Jays.
He struggled with the long ball in each of the last four seasons (he was great over four years before that) and no pitcher, no matter how good they are, is safe when facing Toronto's lineup. That's especially true at Fenway, which plays up for hitters, and is a venue that Eovaldi has pitched much worse at this season compared to the road (4.86 ERA at home, 2.42 away from Boston).
In addition to leading the majors in homers, Toronto is first in slugging, second in OPS, and second in batting average. Simply put, the Blue Jays will hit, whether it comes against Eovaldi or the bullpen.
Boston, meanwhile, is no slouch at the plate, either. The Red Sox rank Top 5 in average and slugging, and they do a much better job hitting righties than lefties, making the rookie Manoah a delightful sight after seeing electric lefty Robbie Ray.
While Manoah is a top prospect who dominated the minors, he's making just his fourth start, so expectations should be tempered as he works on getting accustomed to big league hitters. He deserves credit for pitching well in the Bronx and against the powerful White Sox, but he did get spanked by the Marlins two starts ago. And a hobbled Blue Jays bullpen that has really gone downhill after a great start will follow him. The Red Sox's 'pen has struggled, too.
Add it all up, and we're banking on the Over — which can be had at plus money — to hit for the third time in this series.
