After a series-opening win Friday night, the St Louis Cardinals seek their third straight win and fourth in five outings as they take on the New York Mets.

New York has hit the skids, with losses in four of its last five, just after a season-best six-game win streak. That has the books pegging the home team as +105 moneyline underdogs in the MLB odds.

As St. Louis guns for back-to-back series wins, read below for my Cardinals vs Mets predictions and free MLB picks for April 27.

Cardinals vs Mets prediction

My best bet
Under 7.5 (-108 at DraftKings)

My analysis

Even with their recent run of success, the Cardinals have had trouble putting runs up on the board. Their 91 runs scored on the year ranks 26th in MLB, and they’re one of eight teams yet to top 100 runs on the season.

Hitting has been an issue, as St. Louis is Bottom 5 in average, slugging percentage, and OPS, and ranks second-last in home runs this year with 18.

And though their pitching is just slightly better than the bats — the Cards are 20th in both ERA and WHIP, and 24th in opponent batting average — they do have Sonny Gray on the mound Saturday.

The 34-year-old has been great to start the year, compiling a 2-1 record in three starts, posting an ERA of 1.04. The veteran righty has been given just six runs of support all year. He’s coming off a 2-0 loss to the Brewers, despite the fact Gray gave up just two earned runs — his first two of the season — while scattering five hits and striking out 12.

The Mets are middle of the pack in almost every offensive category, but they’ve struggled as of late, scoring two runs or loss in four of the last five contests, including Friday’s 4-2 loss to St Louis.

The reason they currently sit a game over .500 is a consistently good pitching staff, which ranks ninth with a 3.55 team ERA, and teams are hitting just .222 against them, the seventh-best rate in the league.

A sluggish Cards offense might be the remedy for Mets’ starter Adrian Houser, who was shelled in a 10-0 loss to the Brewers. The right-handed Houser lasted just four innings, giving up eight earned runs on seven hits while walking four batters, ballooning his ERA to 7.45.

Gray should neutralize New York’s hitting advantage, but St. Louis will still struggle to score.

This matchup seems to stay on the recent trend, as the Under has hit in five of the last seven head-to-heads.
