Starting pitchers
Jake Arrieta (5-8, 5.32 ERA): Arrieta has been pretty miserable for the Cubs this season. In fact, the two earned runs he gave up in five innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers is one of the best starts he’s had all season. That shows you how far removed he is from his days as an ace in this league. Arrieta has, however, pitched well against the Brewers this season. In two starts against Milwaukee, he has given up just four earned runs in 11.0 innings of work.
Aaron Ashby LHP (0-0, 0.00 ERA): The last time Ashby worked as a true starter was on June 4, when he pitched seven innings in a minor league game. Milwaukee likes to introduce its prospects as relievers, so the team shortened things up for him. This is the lefty’s big-league debut, and he comes into it after having pitched two or fewers innings in six consecutive appearances. With that said, this will end up being a bullpen game for Milwaukee. So, you should expect to see a bunch of different pitchers for the Brewers here.

Moneyline pick
Arrieta has looked completely shot for most of this season, but that hasn’t been the case against the Brewers. On April 14, the righty gave up three earned in five innings against Milwaukee, and he then gave up just one earned run in six innings against them on April 25. The Cubs somehow lost both of those games, but Arrieta certainly did his job in both starts. Look for him to figure out another way to be effective against this lineup, but don’t be surprised if Chicago provides some run support for him.
The Brewers are sending Aaron Ashby to the mound in this game, and the rookie has never appeared in an MLB game. Ashby has some absurd swing-and-miss stuff, and he definitely has big-time potential. However, the lefty hasn’t exactly started many games this year, and he’s definitely going to be a bit nervous when he gets out there against this Cubs lineup. Kris Bryant, who is batting .344 with seven homers and 16 RBIs against lefties this season, could give Ashby some trouble early on. And then the Brewers will likely go to a variety of relievers the rest of the way, making it likely that Chicago will get it going offensively at some point.
PREDICTION: Cubs ML +135
Over/Under pick
Arrieta should be able to give the Cubs a good chance to win this game. Something approaching a quality start would do just that, which would also mean giving up around three or four earned runs. If he does indeed give up that many, this total would be well on its way to going Over.
And considering the Brewers are turning to the bullpen in this game, the Cubs offense has no excuses not to snap out of its recent rut. Milwaukee has some excellent relievers on its roster, but the Cubs are going to get at least four or five innings where they have some golden opportunities to put runs on the board. It’d be pretty surprising if they can’t make that happen here.
