It may just be March, but the scoreboard at the Rogers Centre has been lit up like a Christmas tree on opening weekend.
A whopping 48 runs have been scored over the first three games between the Baltimore Orioles and the Toronto Blue Jays. Will that change in Sunday’s series finale where veteran Chris Bassitt will face off against Tomoyuki Sugano, who is making his MLB debut?
My Blue Jays predictions and MLB picks dig into what should be another high-scoring matchup as Toronto tries to earn a series spilt.

Today’s Blue Jays best bet: Lather, rinse, repeat
Over 8.5 (-125 at BetVictor)
It has been a back-and-forth opening weekend between the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles.
The Orioles opened the series with a 12-2 win on Opening Day, before the Blue Jays responded with an 8-2 win of their own. Saturday’s contest was the closest yet with the O’s earning a 9-5 result. However, there could have been even more scoring in that one as the Jays left an eye-popping 20-men on base.
I like the runs to keep flowing like water in this one.
Veteran Blue Jays starter Chris Bassitt is coming off what could be classified as a down year. Bassitt pitched to a 4.52 expected ERA and a .256 opponent expected batting average, both of which ranked in the 26th percentile or worse in baseball.
Now, Bassitt is crafty, and when he has his large arsenal of pitches working, he is more than capable of putting up a good performance. But his primary pitch, a sinker, didn’t do much sinking in 2024 and opponents crushed it, including the Orioles.
Baltimore has hit Bassitt hard, and current O’s hitters have a combined .272 xBA and a .472 xSLG against him.
Countering Bassitt is Tomoyuki Sugano, who is coming over from Japan and making his MLB debut.
Sugano’s story is a little different than some of the other recent transfers from Japan, as he’ll throw his first MLB pitch at 35 years old. The right-hander was extremely successful in the NPB, pitching to a 2.43 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP over 12 seasons.
Sugano’s game is command. His 6.94 strikeout-to-walk ratio would be among the MLB leaders last season. He relies on a fastball in the 93 mph range and has a cutter and breaking ball as well.
But making your MLB debut comes with butterflies at any age, and big-league hitters should be able to take advantage if his fastball command isn’t exactly on point.
Despite losing two of the first three games, the Jays have totaled 15 runs on 26 hits. Which would normally be a great way to start the year, if not for the O’s being even better.
Let’s make a clean sweep for Overs in this opening series and give me the Over 8.5 on Sunday.
Today’s Blue Jays same-game parlay (SGP)
A healthy Bo Bichette is a great thing for the Blue Jays. He has looked like his old self through the first three games of the season, already racking up six hits, including two doubles.
When Bichette is in a groove like he is now, he has great plate coverage and should be able to attack pitches on the edges in this matchup against Sugano. Let’s start this same-game parlay off with Over 1.5 total bases for Bichette.
And with Bichette getting on base so much, it’s creating opportunities for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Anthony Santander to drive him in.
Vladdy has driven in at least one run in each of the last two games with three hits over that span, while Santander also has three hits and one RBI during the same period.
