The Seattle Mariners get their first look at the Los Angeles Angels' sensational two-way talent in dual action Friday – but based on Thursday's result, they have to be feeling confident.
The Mariners seek their second straight win as the American League West rivals renew hostilities at Angel Stadium of Anaheim. Seattle cruised to a 6-2 victory in the opener and kept Shohei Ohtani neutralized at the plate, as he went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in defeat. He'll take the mound Friday, looking to build off a strong May showing while curtailing the walks that have been a problem for most of the season.
Here's a look at our betting picks for Friday's showdown between the Mariners and Angels.

Starting pitchers
Robert Dugger (0-1, 6.23 ERA): Dugger will kick off what is expected to be a bullpen game for the Mariners, who placed original Friday starter Justin Dunn on the IL Wednesday with shoulder inflammation. Seattle will hope to get multiple innings out of Dugger, who surrendered two runs over three innings in his previous meeting with the Angels back on May 1.
Shohei Ohtani (1-1, 2.72 ERA): Ohtani has done well to keep runs off the board in recent starts, posting an impressive 2.38 ERA in four May appearances. But walks remain a persistent issue for the talented two-way star, as he issued four free passes over six innings of a 3-1 loss to Oakland last time out. Ohtani has a sparkling 1.37 ERA in four home starts.

Moneyline pick
The Mariners' underlying numbers aren't great when it comes to the prospect of a bullpen game. Seattle has already racked up the seventh-most innings in baseball out of its relievers (217 2/3) while boasting a 4.09 reliever ERA and a 4.11 xFIP, both of which rank slightly below the league average. They do, however, have the No. 5 HR/FB ratio among relievers at 9.3 percent.
That said, it might not matter what the Seattle relief corps does Friday if Ohtani continues to dominate on home turf. Opponents have a minuscule .145 OBA in 18 1/3 innings vs. Ohtani at Angel Stadium, with the hard-throwing righty having racked up 26 strikeouts in that span. He has issued 19 walks over that same stretch, but has done well to mitigate the damage overall.
The pitching matchup is everything here, and we like Ohtani over whatever collection of relief arms the Mariners throw out there.
PREDICTION: Angels (-170)
Over/Under pick
Ohtani's red-hot May coincided with the Angels doing next to nothing at the plate to support him. His four starts produced an average of 4.8 runs per game, giving Under bettors not much of a sweat at all.
The Angels are 20th in the majors in wOBA over the past 30 days (.298), while the Mariners are 28th (.284). That's not much offense being produced by these teams – and while their ISOs both rank in the middle of the pack over that span, their K rates are alarming (Seattle is ninth at 25.5 percent, while the Angels are 11th at 25.0).
Offense should be at a premium here, making the Under a strong play.
PREDICTION: Under 9 (-110)
